Abstract

A study for one semester in Teaching learning strategy course was carried out to get the profile of biology student teachers conception about science, learning, and science teaching, as we know that constructivist paradigm in education is not just studied as a theory, but needs to be implemented in real teaching learning processes. A number of Biology education students (n =29) were involved as subjects. Their free essay were used as source and were organized through coding and then recoding using specific program (NUD.IST). It was found that there are five categories for their conception about science (i.e. study about nature, collection of knowledge or concepts, research method, the single truth, to worship their Creator); five categories their conception about learning (i.e. changing process, knowledge improvement, conceptual change, thinking process, interaction with environment); and three catagories for their conception about  science teaching (i.e. as fasilitating, knowledge transfer, interaction between teacher and students). Most of biology students have more than one conception (two or three), but none of them has a complete conception about science, learning and science teaching.  Biology student teachers conception about teaching (mostly as knowledge transfer) is paralel with their conception about science (mostly as study about nature) and about learning (mostly as knowledge improvement).  These findings give implication to their supervisor to pay attention more seriously on the students conception abot science, learning, and teaching. Because the way they teach will be influenced by their conception about those things. One suggestion to handle is by giving the student teachers to express their opinion about those things so that they are aware to other conceptions and in turn they will be aware to accept (and apply) conception based on constructivist reference or paradigm.

Abstract

Samples were 53 tenth grader in one of senior high schools in Bandung. The instrument consists of student worksheet (LKS), virtual lab software and instruments to collect data. Students’ creative thinking skills were measured using tests of creative thinking in the form of eight essay questions about plant growth and development. Results showed that the average score of actual lab class was higher than the average score of virtual lab class. In addition, actual lab also can improve students' creative thinking in all aspects of creative thinking abilities (flexibility, fluency, elaboration and originality). This suggests that the real laboratory activities provide better conditions for the development of students’ creative thinking.

Abstract

The study of “Pedagogical Content Knowledge Development of Science Prospective Teachers in Professional Practice Program” was conducted in one junior high school located in Bandung. The purpose of the study was to analyze the level and pattern of science prospective teachers’ PCK development as measured by CoRe. The study involved students who enrolled professionals practice program. Mixed methods, quantitative and qualitative research was utilized as a method in the study. Data collected by the coding and scoring of the CoRe instruments were analyzed quantitatively; and data gained from observation, documentation, and interviews were analyzed qualitatively. The results showed that the PCK of prospective teachers are in the maturing PCK (level 3) and growing PCK (level 2). There are two patterns of PCK development showed by prospective teachers i.e. rising and fluctuative. The prospective teachers who are in the mature PCK show the pattern of rising, whereas prospective teachers who are in the growing PCK show fluctuative pattern. The study reveals that external and internal factors influenced the development of PCK. The pattern of guidance, lesson study activities, and intensity guidance are external factors that influenced the pattern of prospective students’ PCK development. Psychological effect that exists between teachers and students, the motivation of self to expand the horizons of knowledge, communication skills, and teaching experiences are the internal factors that influenced the development of prospective teacher PCK. The study suggests that the development of prospective teachers PCK in the program can be improved when supervisor and prospective teachers put consideration to those internal and external factors that influence the development of PCK.

Abstract

After the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” with 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has become a global consensus in 2015, its implementation raises questions about the role of education in achieving these goals. Because education clearly covers the content of all the SDGs and provides the skills and competencies needed to face the challenges of a sustainable future. Education for sustainable development (ESD) is the role of education to promote sustainable development, which in this study is applied through the introduction and implementation of green behavior activities in elementary schools. The purpose of this study is to measure the sustainability consciousness of elementary school students through the implementation of ESD in elementary schools. This research is an experimental research in the form of pre-experimental design (single group designs). The instrument used in this research is the Sustainability Consciousness Questionnaire (SCQ) which allows the investigation of students' knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of sustainability. The results of this study indicate that students who have been given an education for sustainable development program through the introduction of green behavior experience a significant increase in sustainability consciousness. The implications of this research provide an overview of cognitive and affective responses to students regarding issues that are the scope of ESD such as global issues, issues related to human sustainability, consciousness of recovery from environmental damage that is happening today, and thinking about how to preservation is able to survive and can fulfill life in the future.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the application of the nature of science in high-grade elementary science learning and the obstacles faced by teachers and students during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study used a qualitative descriptive method to provide an overview of the application of the nature of science in elementary science learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The subjects in this study comprised of 41 teachers and 127 high-grade students from various regions in Indonesia. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire containing 29 statement items for teachers and 21 statement items for students with four answer choices namely always, often, sometimes, and never based on three indicators, namely (1) Science Product, (2) Science Process, (3) Science Attitude. Based on the results of the analysis, it is shown that the indicators of science product and science attitude have the highest percentages chosen by students with answers of always; meanwhile, the science process indicator has the highest percentages chosen by students and teachers for answer of sometimes. Therefore, it can be concluded that elementary science learning in high-grade during the Covid-19 pandemic did not run optimally due to the lack of application of the nature of science, especially the science process.
