Abstract

Speaking skill development in Arabic learning often faces challenges related to anxiety, limited practice opportunities, and lack of exposure to authentic spoken language. This study aims to explore graduate students’ lived experiences in using YouTube Arabic Podcasts for developing maharah kalam. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study involved graduate students as participants, with data collected through in-depth interviews and classroom observations and analyzed thematically. The findings reveal that students experience YouTube Arabic Podcasts as a flexible and learner-controlled medium that supports autonomous speaking practice. Repeated exposure to authentic pronunciation and intonation reduces speaking anxiety, enhances confidence, and gradually improves fluency. Students also demonstrate a shift in speaking orientation, prioritizing meaning-making over grammatical perfection. The novelty of this study lies in its phenomenological insight into the psychological and experiential dimensions of podcast-based Arabic speaking learning. The findings imply that integrating Arabic podcasts into speaking instruction can foster a more communicative, confidence-oriented, and learner-centered approach to maharah kalam development.

Abstract

In the context of Islamic boarding school (pesantren) education, the skill of memorizing the Qur’an is often not accompanied by an adequate understanding of its meaning. One promising approach to address this issue is the integration of Maharah Qira’ah (reading skills) with thematic Qur’anic interpretation (tafsir tematik). This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of a Maharah Qira’ah teaching material based on thematic interpretation that was previously developed for students who have memorized the Qur’an (santri penghafal Al-Qur’an). This research employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test model. The research subjects consisted of 10 Qur’an-memorizing students from an Islamic boarding school in East Java. The instruments included pre-test and post-test assessments, supplemented by observation and field notes as supporting data. Data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test with the assistance of SPSS software. The results showed a significant increase in the mean score from 76.0 to 97.0 after the use of the teaching material, with a significance value of 0.004 (p < 0.05). The decrease in standard deviation from 16.47 to 4.83 indicates improved equality in student learning outcomes. These findings demonstrate that the thematic tafsir-based Maharah Qira’ah material is effective in enhancing students’ contextual understanding of Qur’anic verses. Therefore, this teaching material can serve as an innovative alternative for reading instruction among Qur’an-memorizing students, as it successfully integrates memorization with comprehension through a thematic and real-life context-based approach.   Abstrak:  Dalam konteks pendidikan pesantren, keterampilan menghafal Al-Qur’an belum sepenuhnya diimbangi dengan kemampuan memahami isi kandungannya.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and analyze the impact of using a communicative approach to improve Arabic language proficiency. The focus is based on the problem of low Arabic speaking skills among students, which, according to the researcher’s hypothesis, is partly due to teachers’ inability to apply appropriate teaching methods that align with learning objectives. This research employed a quantitative method, designed to test the effect of the communicative approach in classroom instruction and its influence on students' Arabic language proficiency. The data source consisted of all Grade XI students, and data analysis was conducted using simple regression with the assistance of SPSS. The results of the analysis revealed: 1) the application of the communicative approach in teaching Arabic language proficiency was categorized as high, with a median score of 84.9, 2) students' Arabic language proficiency was also categorized as high, with a median score of 60.3, and 3) there was a significant effect of 65.2% between the independent variable (X) and the dependent variable (Y), with a significance value of 0.000 and an R square of 0.652.

Abstract

Providing fast, accurate, and accessible Arabic language learning in Islamic educational institutions—both formal and informal—is still a challenge. Many teaching strategies rely on limited resources, making Arabic seem hard to learn and lacking professionalism. This study explores the theories used in innovating teaching strategies and evaluates the outcomes of these innovations based on doctoral dissertations for elementary, secondary, and higher education levels. The research uses a qualitative approach with library research methods, focusing on dissertations from the Doctoral Program in Arabic Language Education (2012–2022). The main data include the theories that guided the innovations and the results achieved, while secondary data consist of curricula, syllabi, and teaching modules. Data collection methods include documentation, observation, interviews, and analysis techniques such as data reduction, categorization, triangulation, and drawing conclusions. Findings indicate that innovations in Arabic teaching strategies are built on theories such as Multiple Intelligences, Robert Mill Gagné’s Micro Strategies, Contextual Teaching, Constructivism (PJBL), HOTs, SIOP, and 4Cs. Innovative strategies include: (1) adapting learning objectives to match the applied theories, (2) creating teaching materials aligned with these objectives, (3) combining traditional and modern teaching methods, (4) integrating conventional media with digital platforms, and (5) using diverse evaluation methods, including authentic, portfolio-based, formative, and summative assessments.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions of 8th grade students at Muhammadiyah Junior High School Bantul, Yogyakarta regarding the use of technological media in Arabic language instruction, with a particular focus on reading skills. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model. The findings indicate that the majority of students hold a positive perception of the use of technological media, as it is considered to facilitate vocabulary comprehension, enhance learning motivation, and create a more interactive and engaging learning atmosphere. Individual factors, the characteristics of the media, and the learning context also contribute to shaping these perceptions. This study provides practical contributions to the development of Arabic language learning strategies that are relevant to the characteristics of the digital generation and can serve as a reference for teachers and educational institutions in optimizing technological media to improve reading skills.
