Abstract

This paper examines the civic identity of the Dayak people in the West Kalimantan border region within the context of ethnic transnationalism, emphasizing the role of custom and cross-border mobility. Recognizing that Dayak communities have historically lived beyond the boundaries of modern states, the study conceptualizes citizenship as a lived social experience that does not always align with nation-state logic. Using ethnographic methods, the research explores how Dayak people interpret citizenship through everyday practices, kinship relations, and cross-border interactions. The findings show that citizenship is understood situationally and pragmatically, particularly in relation to administrative needs and access to state services, while ethnic and customary identities remain the primary basis of social loyalty. Custom functions as a value framework regulating community membership, social relations, and attachment to ancestral lands across borders. Continuous mobility sustains a transnational social space where borders are negotiated administrative structures rather than rigid social boundaries. The study highlights the layered and dynamic nature of border citizenship and contributes to scholarship on indigenous transnationalism.

Abstract

This article reviews border issues related to threats, dynamics, problems, and nationalism of the Indonesian people living on the border of West Kalimantan. The dynamics and complex problems on the Indonesia-Malaysia border have created various conflicts and struggles for citizenship in both countries. In addition, kinship in the two countries has a different impact on nationalism, as people on the border in the PLBN zone are more controllable from a socio-economic point of view. Meanwhile, people living in non-PLBN zones tend to have many problems, such as poor welfare and infrastructure development. As a result, the Indonesian people, bordered by the Non-PLBN zone, seem to prefer a country that provides welfare. This study uses the civic engagement and securitization theory to analyze how these issues occur in the Indonesian-Malaysian border community. This study shows a critical review of the picture related to threats, dynamics, nationalism, and strategies of local communities at the border. In the case study, issues concerning the dynamics of local border residents in Indonesia are themes that deserve more attention from various parties, from academics to practitioners. Therefore, with empirical evidence from this study, it is hoped that researchers, academics, practitioners, and politicians will be able to respond wisely to cross-border dynamics

Abstract

Abstract This article explains the life of Indonesian female scavengers in facing the double burden phenomenon that occurs at the TPA Batu Layang Departing from C. Wright Mills' theory, this article discusses how structural poverty can encourage the double burden phenomenon. The qualitative method of the phenomenological approach is used in this study. Seen from its history, female scavengers are refugees who migrated to Pontianak City and chose to work as scavengers due to the Madurese and Malay ethnic conflict in 1999. Low resources, high economic demands make it difficult for female scavengers to get a prosperous life so they decide to play a dual role. It was found that out of 12 female scavengers, only 5 scavengers received social assistance because there was no equal distribution of social assistance from the government, so they had not received their rights and justice. The scavengers' mindset regarding the importance of education has now begun to change with evidence that some of their children continue their education to a higher level of education. This article argues that government support in the form of increasing women's resources, social assistance and education has a significant impact on the welfare of female scavenger families amidst the double burden phenomenon they experience

Abstract

SMPN 7 and SMPN 19 in Singkawang have approximately 65% students of Chinese descent. Persistent stereotypes often marginalize the role of the Chinese community by reducing it solely to economic dominance, leading to the assumption that their involvement is merely profit-oriented. The implementation of the Pancasila Student Profile (P5) supports the active participation of Chinese-Indonesian students in collectively shaping Pancasila values. In this context, Chinese-Indonesian students serve as key agents in fostering the development of an inclusive national character. This study aims to describe how Indonesian language learning can be implemented to strengthen the values of the Pancasila Student Profile in a multicultural school environment, specifically at SMPN 7 and SMPN 19 Singkawang. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observations, interviews with school principals, Indonesian language teachers, and students, and documentation of school activities. Indonesian language learning at SMPN 7 and SMPN 19 Singkawang has been proven to play a strategic role in strengthening the values of the Pancasila Student Profile through the development of character, tolerance, and nationalism within a multicultural school environment, while simultaneously affirming the active role of Chinese-Indonesian students as agents in shaping an inclusive national identity. At SMPN 7 Singkawang, interfaith celebrations such as Eid, Chinese New Year, and Christmas serve as inclusive spaces for interaction that foster mutual respect. Meanwhile, SMPN 19 regularly organizes cultural art weeks that showcase ethnic diversity to reinforce a pluralistic national identity. Chinese-Indonesian students are not merely recipients but also active agents in building an inclusive and tolerant national identity.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the socio-cultural, economic, and educational aspects of border communities between Indonesia and Malaysia, with a focus on the Malay and Dayak ethnic groups in Paloh (Sambas Regency) and Jagoi Babang (Bengkayang Regency). Persistent disparities in welfare, educational quality, and national integration in Indonesia’s border regions have weakened nationalism and increased socio-economic dependence on Malaysia. On the border, civic education plays a crucial role in strengthening Indonesian nationalism, despite the community’s economic dependence on Malaysia. Through flag ceremonies, character education, and the integration of local wisdom into the curriculum, schools function as the final bastion of nationalism, safeguarding the national identity of the younger generation in the face of economic inequality and transnational influences. Using a qualitative approach that integrates ethnographic and etnopedagogic methods, data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The findings indicate that Indonesian border communities experience a dual identity, marked by both symbolic loyalty to Indonesia and pragmatic attachment to Sarawak, Malaysia. Economic disparities between the two countries, especially in access to infrastructure, education, and labour markets, have heightened social dependency and eroded Indonesia’s national identity. However, the integration of local wisdom and etnopedagogic practices in education in both countries has proven effective in strengthening cultural resilience, social cohesion, and national consciousness among students. Cultural rituals such as Gawai Dayak serve as transnational spaces of solidarity that both connect and differentiate the two nations.

Abstract

Kata kunci: Al-Farabi, Negara, Konsep Negara Masa Kini AbstractAl-Farabi is someone who has an educational background in philosophy and he was a Muslim philosopher in the 10th century. According to Al-Farabi in an occupying country it is necessary to know God, be spiritually active (Aql Fa'al), based on a harmonious system of virtue values, and believe in life after death. Al-Farabi's idea of the main state by many writers is taken from his work entitled Arā' Aḥl al-Madīnah al-Fāḍīlah which literally means "Basics of the Main City Citizen's View" and is one of his most famous works. In this work, al-Farabi's views were heavily influenced by two Greek philosophers, namely Plato and Aristotle. The main state is a state whose citizens understand the nature of truth (theoretical) and also have the ability to act appropriately (tawassuth) by considering the place, time, actors and also the reasons why it must be done (phronesis). This virtue can make its citizens achieve happiness (al-sa'dah). Happiness is the most important and highest goal of life in human life. In an effort to realize the ultimate state, the role of the philosopher king becomes very important because he will educate his citizens to understand and act according to the values of virtue. Some people find it difficult to realize Al-Farabi's ideas in today's government and power because they think that Al-Farabi's thoughts are radical. This idea is also not a utopian thought but becomes a criticism for state administrators. This study aims to define the state based on the relationship between the views of an Islamic political philosopher named Al-Farabi with his relation to the concept of state life in Indonesia. The method used in this study is a qualitative method using data collection techniques (library research) obtained from several official websites, articles, scientific journals, as well as from previous research. Keywords: Al-Farabi, The State, The Concept of the Present State

Abstract

Kata kunci: Soekarno, Marhaenisme, Ideologi AbstractThis paper describes a concept from Soekarno's thoughts on marhaenism which is analyzed and dissected according to the available literature sources. Then it contains a discourse against Indonesia about the government's obligation to protect the Marhaen in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic. Marhaenism is identical to an ideology of struggle against capitalism that grows and develops in this world. Marhaenism was born and grew based on a sense of shared destiny and shared responsibility caused by colonialism and imperialism. As a result of colonization by foreign nations, the Indonesian people live in full of suffering and misery. With this ideology, it is hoped that colonized Indonesia will soon rise and recover.
