Abstract

The Glagah consortium is a mixed culture of various microalgae and bacteria isolated from Glagah Beach, Yogyakarta. Cobalamin and thiamine, which are given by symbiotic bacteria, are assumed will increase biomass. This study aimed to determine the effect of cobalamin and thiamine on microalgae biomass production in the Glagah consortium. The microalgae of Glagah consortium were cultivated for 10 days with vancomycin and gentamicin antibiotic as treatment and without antibiotics as a control. The parameters measured included the number of bacterial colonies, cobalamin and thiamine levels measured by LC-MS, chlorophyll a and b levels, cell density of microalgae and dry biomass. The highest level of cobalamin and thiamine was in the Glagah consortium without antibiotics. Cobalamin and thiamine increased in the exponential phase along with the increasing Staphylococcus sp. colonies. The Quantity of Staphylococcus sp. colonies in the exponential phase was 62.105 (cfu/mL). The level of cobalamin in the exponential phase was 2.33 µg/L and the level of thiamine in the exponential phase was 49.71 µg/L. The highest productivity dried weight biomass was 0.0134 g/L/day in the day-6th on the Glagah consortium without antibiotics. This result showed that microalgae and bacterial interaction was mutualism symbiosis involving cobalamin and thiamine that increased in the exponential phase along with the increasing Staphylococcus sp. colonies. This interaction was able to increase biomass microalgae.

Abstract

Toxicity of methylene blue (MB) in water bodies has a negative effect on environment and living organisms. The presence of MB in water could last longer in view of the non-biodegradable characteristic. In this study, hydrochar was used as adsorbent to remove MB from aqueous solution. Hydrochar derived from bagasse was successfully prepared by hydrothermal carbonization treatment at temperature of 270oC, and pressure of 10 Bar for 30 minutes. For enhancing the adsorption ability, hydrochar was activated by adding KOH that was able to increase the percent removal by ~11%. The hydrochar was characterized using FTIR before and after adsorption. The results showed that the dominant functional groups of hydrochar included O-H, C=O, -O- and aromatic compounds. Whereas, the functional group of azo groups such as N-H and N=N appeared after adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) was 5.1204 mg/g, while the adsorption isotherm of MB onto hydrochar followed the Langmuir and Freundlich model. The adsorption mechanism belongs to chemical adsorption, and the rate of diffusion can be neglected because the adsorption kinetics fitted well with pseudo-second order and the value of k2 > kdif > k1. Thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption process is classified as endothermic and reversible at room temperature. The results showed that hydrochar could be the alternative adsorbent for removing MB in wastewater. In addition, sugarcane bagasse has a great potential as feedstock of hydrochar.

Abstract

Jatropha oil is a very potential source of biodiesel fuel that can be processed through alcoholysis. In the present work, a study on alcoholysis of Jatropha oil with the use of solid acid catalyst was conducted in a wellmixed batch reactor. The study involved varying reaction temperatures of 100°C to 140°C, ethanol-oil molar ratio of 9, agitation speed of 1000 rpm and catalyst loading of 3% with respect to the oil. The reaction was carried out for 120 minutes; meanwhile samples were taken from the reactor every 15 minutes for glycerol analysis. In order to predict kinetics parameter of the alcoholysis reaction, a mathematical model of consecutive reactions was developed. The Matlab software was used to solve the simultaneous differential equations. Over the range of variables used in the experiment, the mathematical model was able to fit the experimental data quite well. The calculation results showed that the values of collision frequency factor for the consecutive reactions are 5.13 x 103; 5.682 x 103, and 2.534 x 103 (cm3/mgek) (cm3/g.cat/min). Meanwhile, the activation energies for the consecutive reaction are 4,176; 4,310 and 6,019 cal/mol.

Abstract

The prototypes of the Oscillating Water Column (OWC) system constructed by BPPT at Pantai Baron, Gunung Kidul, in 2005  and 2006 were not sustainable. Based on its condition and location, the root cause of the problem was defined. Maximizing the total efficiency and capacity factor (Cf) of the OWC system was the main factor for optimizing energy output. Collecting  factors that constructed the total efficiency and capacity factor of the OWC system was conducted. Selecting the appropriate  turbine, generator, and chamber system led to an increase in the total efficiency of the OWC system. Reducing the effect of  wave diffraction, finding optimum wave data for forecasting, finding optimum water depth area to avoid wave breaking area,  reducing corrosion chance by selecting the optimum height of the OWC system, and using a control system to minimize stalling  on turbine were factors that constructed capacity factor

Abstract

The rapid development of technology has impacted various sectors, including tourism. Medan, as one of the metropolitan cities in Indonesia, has experienced a significant increase in tourist visits, leading to heightened competition among hotels. This study aims to develop a decision support system (DSS) for selecting the best hotel in Medan using the EDAS (Evaluation Based on Distance From Average Solution) method. This method was chosen for its ability to assess alternatives based on their distance from the desired average solution, in accordance with relevant criteria. The study considers five criteria in hotel selection: price, location, hotel rating, facilities, and room type. As a sample, five popular hotels in Medan were used for the analysis. In the calculation using the EDAS method, a decision matrix is first created based on the weighted values of the criteria. Then, the average value for each criterion is calculated, followed by the computation of positive and negative distance matrices for each alternative. The results show that the EDAS method can assist in making objective and measurable decisions to select the best hotel, based on user preferences that take into account various aspects such as price and facilities. This study is expected to contribute to the development of DSS for the hotel industry, particularly in Medan, in order to enhance tourists' experience in choosing a hotel that suits their needs and budget.

Abstract

Cryptography is a field that is really needed in the current era of globalization where security and confidentiality of information are very difficult to maintain considering wide and open communication access. Cryptography currently has a variety of methods and techniques which are divided into two categories, namely symmetric cryptography and asymmetric cryptography where their use depends on needs and conditions. The Merkle Hellman Knapsack method is an asymmetric cryptography method that uses a public key and a private key so that tapping and cracking becomes more difficult due to the use of different keys both during encryption and during decryption. Application development using the Merkle Hellman Knapsack method generates public keys and private keys using super increasing and inverse modulo series values, making the cryptanalysis process more difficult. The system developed is able to provide an alternative in securing text data.
