Abstract

The use of innovative learning media has been considered a strategic effort to enhance teaching effectiveness at the elementary school level, especially for conceptual subjects such as the human digestive system. In Dili, Timor-Leste, limited access to contextual learning media and the lack of pedagogical training for teachers have been identified as real challenges in the learning process. This community service activity was designed to improve the skills of elementary school teachers in Dili in utilizing the LUPI (Ludo Monopoli) learning media for the topic of the digestive system. LUPI is an interactive educational media based on a board game, which was developed to facilitate student understanding in an active and enjoyable manner. The implementation method was composed of training, direct practice, reflective discussion, and skills evaluation. The activity was conducted for two days at Universidade Católica Timorense (UCT) São João Paulo II and was participated in by 10 local elementary school teachers. Significant improvements were shown in teachers' understanding of digestive system concepts and in their ability to design and implement the LUPI media in teaching. Moreover, it was stated by the teachers that the use of LUPI increased student engagement, clarified concepts, and encouraged interest in learning. It is recommended that follow-up training based on thematic curriculum and replication of similar media for other topics be provided. The collaboration between educational institutions from Indonesia and Timor-Leste has been proven effective in addressing cross-national pedagogical challenges through an approach rooted in local wisdom and educational games.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the limited research integrating the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach with the use of locally-based cultural supplement books, despite its potential to enhance students’ cognitive learning outcomes within Indonesia’s culturally diverse context. The objective of this study is to analyze the impact of implementing CRT mediated by a cultural diversity supplement book on the cognitive learning outcomes of fourth-grade elementary students in the topic of Indonesian Cultural Diversity. A quantitative method was employed using a quasi-experimental pre-test post-test control group design involving 56 students, randomly assigned to the experimental group (28 students) and control group (28 students). The instruments included a multiple-choice test (CVI = 0.87; Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.84) and a structured observation sheet. Data were analyzed using ANCOVA. The findings revealed a significant difference between the experimental group (post-test score: 84.75; mastery: 85.71%) and the control group (post-test score: 74.18; mastery: 50.00%), with F(1,53) = 15.87 and p < 0.001. Student engagement in the experimental group reached 87.50%, with interaction with the supplement book at 89.29%. These results support Vygotsky’s constructivist theory and highlight the importance of contextual and culturally grounded learning. The main conclusion is that the CRT approach mediated by a local culture-based supplement book is effective in improving students’ cognitive learning outcomes. Theoretical implications include contributions to multicultural learning literature, while practical implications recommend the integration of culturally-based learning media in IPAS instruction. Further research is encouraged to explore long-term impacts and affective dimensions of student learning.

Abstract

Syntactic foam is a lightweight, high‑strength composite consisting of a polymer matrix filled with hollow microspheres (microballoons). This study examines how the volume fraction of glass‑clad silica microballoons K15 (10–50 vol %) affects the density, porosity, and void distribution of epoxy‑bonded syntactic foams. Specimens were molded in accordance with ASTM D790, conditioned for 48 h (23 ± 2 °C; 50  ±  5 % RH), and their density was measured by the pycnometric method specified in ASTM D792. Porosity was calculated theoretically and validated by SEM–EDS imaging of fracture cross‑sections. Results show a linear decrease in density from 1.15 g cm⁻³ (0 vol %) to 0.63 g cm⁻³ (50 vol %), while porosity rises exponentially from 2.7 % to 18.4 %. Morphological analysis confirms a homogeneous microballoon dispersion up to 30 vol %, but agglomeration and interbinder voids appear above 40 vol %, leading to uncontrolled porosity. A strong negative correlation (R² = 0.96) is observed between density and effective porosity. A 30 vol % K15 loading is identified as the optimum, achieving a 28 % density reduction without a significant porosity spike. These findings provide a basis for designing sandwich cores and amphibious flotation structures that require high strength‑to‑weight ratios.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) model in improving the reading skills of lower-grade elementary school students at SDN 11 Pajo, Dompu Regency. The urgency of this research lies in the low literacy achievement among elementary students, particularly in identifying main ideas, answering literal questions, making inferences, and drawing conclusions from texts. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method using a one-group pretest–posttest design. The subjects consisted of 28 second-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through a validated reading comprehension test and classroom observations of TaRL-based learning implementation. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, N-Gain calculations, and paired sample t-tests. The findings indicate a significant increase in the mean score from 54.8 in the pretest to 84.6 in the posttest, with a mean difference of 29.8 points and a significance level of p < 0.001. The N-Gain analysis showed that 39.3% of students were in the high category, 53.6% in the medium category, and only 7.1% in the low category. These results confirm that the TaRL model is not only effective in enhancing literacy outcomes but also in reducing learning gaps through differentiated instruction. This study concludes that TaRL is highly relevant to the implementation of the Independent Curriculum, contributes theoretically to the development of early literacy strategies, and provides practical implications for teachers and policymakers in strengthening reading skills as the foundation for continuous learning.
