Abstract

Background: Mathematics education in vocational schools faces challenges in fostering students’ creative thinking, particularly in understanding abstract concepts and generating alternative solutions. Classroom practices often emphasize procedural replication, while teachers encounter difficulties in addressing diverse learning needs, highlighting the need for innovative, contextual, and culturally responsive approaches. Aims: This study aims to strengthen vocational students’ creative thinking in mathematics by designing an integrated instructional model that combines pedagogy, technology, and cultural elements. Methods: A qualitative design thinking approach was applied through the stages of Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test/Evaluate. Data were collected using questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations to identify student and teacher needs. The proposed model was further examined through a meta-analysis using effect size calculations to synthesize findings from relevant empirical studies. Results: The findings indicate that students need more flexible, innovative, and culturally meaningful learning experiences. An instructional prototype, Gema-Batik, was developed by integrating Project-Based Learning, ethnomathematics, GeoGebra, and jBatik within a design thinking framework. The model emphasizes problem orientation, exploration, digital modeling, motif creation, and presentation, targeting creative thinking indicators such as fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. Meta-analytic results show a high pooled effect size, indicating strong potential to enhance creative thinking and related competencies. Conclusion: The Gema-Batik model offers a novel, culturally grounded, and technology-integrated approach that contributes both theoretically and practically to vocational mathematics education, particularly in fostering creative thinking aligned with the demands of creative industries.

Abstract

The discrepancy between classroom mathematics and the demands of the Business and Industrial World often results in less-than-ideal problem-solving ability for vocational high school students. To meet this challenge, learning methods that link mathematics to real-world work contexts are needed. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of integrating the Teaching Factory (TeFa) model with a contextual learning approach in teaching relations and functions. A quantitative quasi-experimental method with the pre-test–post-test control group design was employed. The sample was 46 eleventh-grade pharmacy students at Muhammadiyah Al Manaar Vocational High School, Pemalang, selected through purposive sampling and divided equally into experimental and control groups. Data were collected using a validated mathematical problem-solving instrument and analysed using an independent samples t-test. Post-test performances differed significantly between the two groups (p < 0.05). The experimental group gained a moderate improvement with an N-gain score of 0.42. Moreover, the Cohen’s d value of 0.81 indicated a large effect of the TeFa model compared with conventional instruction.  These findings indicate that the integration of TeFa and contextual learning is effective to improve students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities while reinforcing the relevance of mathematics learning to real industrial workplace contexts in vocational education.

Abstract

This study aims to develop Gen-M Media (Dragon Mathematics Educational Game), based on an active learning approach, that is valid, practical, and effective in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills and fostering cooperative character in mathematics learning among fifth-grade elementary school students. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which consists of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The instruments used included validation sheets, questionnaires, observation sheets, and critical thinking tests. Validation sheets were administered to media experts, material experts, and practitioners to assess the validity and feasibility of the Gen-M media. Questionnaires were distributed to teachers and students to evaluate practicality. Observation sheets were used to assess the development of students’ cooperative character. In addition, pretests and posttests were used to measure critical thinking skills. The data were analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative techniques. The results indicated that: (1) expert and practitioner validation categorized the media as “highly appropriate”; (2) practicality tests yielded scores of 95% from teachers and 91.17% from students, classified as “very practical”; and (3) quantitative analysis confirmed that the Gen-M media significantly improved students’ critical thinking skills by [insert value]% and fostered cooperative character development. In conclusion, the Gen-M media integrated with an active learning approach is a valid, practical, and effective instructional tool that positively influences both the cognitive and social competencies of elementary school students in mathematics education.

Abstract

Numeracy is a crucial competency for high school students, but many students struggle with contextual numeracy problems because they use interactive learning media infrequently. This study aims to analyze the learning needs of vocational high school students and design innovative solutions to improve their numeracy skills. The key innovative aspect of this study lies in integrating design thinking, Augmented Reality (AR), and gamification approaches on the Assemblr Edu and Kahoot (ALOOT) platforms. The methodological approach used is qualitative, integrating the empathizing, defining, and ideation phases of Design Thinking with meta-analysis. Participants included 101 students and 9 mathematics teachers. The initial study results indicated that students face significant challenges in understanding contextual numeracy problems due to the inherent limitations of interactive media. A meta-analysis of 10 relevant articles revealed a highly significant effect of AR and gamification on numeracy skills, with an effect size of 1,400, indicating a very large effect. The practical implications of this research include developing user-centered instructional media guidelines, increasing student engagement and active motivation through interactive learning, and strengthening the relevance of numeracy content to real-world work and the vocational contexts faced by vocational high school students.
