Abstract

A conducive learning situation is essential in learning English. However, one problem that usually disturbs the learning situation is the appearance of disruptive behavior. Students' disruptive behavior is an inappropriate behavior conducted by students during the learning process which turns the classroom into not conducive. Exactly, there are several factors contribute to the occurrence of disruptive behavior in the classroom, especially on senior high school students. Thus, the current study was a case study aimed to investigate several causes of students' disruptive behavior in English teaching-learning process in the classroom. The subjects of this study were seven English teachers and six selected classes from the tenth grade until the twelfth-grade students in a small town in Indonesia. The data were collected by using observation and interview. The result of this study showed that students' disruptive behavior in the English classroom was caused by internal factor and external factor. Feeling boredom, feeling anxiety, and seeking attention were internal factor that became the occurrence of disruptive behavior. While fatigue and the influence of media were the external factor that causes the emergence of students' disruptive behavior in the English teaching-learning process in the classroom.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools play a vital role in Indonesia’s education system, particularly in shaping students’ religious and academic development. Within these institutions, implementing collaborative learning presents unique challenges due to their emphasis on discipline, religious values, and limited technological access. This study aims to explore Islamic boarding school teachers’ perspectives on the challenges of applying social constructivist approaches in collaborative learning within TEFL classrooms, as well as the strategies used to overcome these obstacles. Using a qualitative design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five teachers and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that while collaborative learning can enhance students’ motivation, critical thinking, and language skills, it requires careful planning and ongoing professional development to be effective in this context. Challenges identified include curriculum constraints, school culture, inadequate facilities, diverse student cognitive abilities, varying motivation levels, and emotional regulation. The study underscores the importance of strategic lesson planning, effective group composition, and teacher training in addressing these issues and improving collaborative learning in Islamic boarding school settings.

Abstract

Recent phenomena indicate a decline in students’ interest in appreciating cultural arts, particularly through national songs, due to the dominance of foreign popular culture and the lack of learning innovation in schools. This situation reduces the internalization of national values and weakens student engagement in cultural arts education. This study aims to analyze the application of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) in cultural arts subjects by employing national songs as a learning medium. A descriptive qualitative design was used with one cultural arts teacher and 32 grade XI students of SMA Negeri 1 Colomadu as research participants. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, then analyzed using a thematic approach to identify patterns, relevance, and effectiveness. The findings reveal that CTL based on national songs successfully increases students’ learning motivation, strengthens their emotional connection with the material, and fosters awareness of national values. Teachers also reported greater creativity in designing meaningful and contextual strategies. The study concludes that integrating CTL with national songs not only improves cultural arts learning but also revitalizes students’ character building and national identity. The contribution of this research lies in enriching the theoretical discourse on CTL integration in cultural arts and offering a practical model that addresses the challenges of globalization while strengthening love for the homeland.

Abstract

This study explores how classroom tasks enhance students’ communicative competence in an English for Receptionists training program using Project-Based Learning (PJBL). By incorporating role-playing, simulations, and task-based interactions reflecting real-life scenarios such as guest greetings, check-ins, complaint handling, and local knowledge sharing, the program aims to develop four components of communicative competence: grammatical, sociolinguistic, discourse, and strategic. A qualitative case study approach was employed, with data collected through classroom observations, interviews, and document analysis, then analyzed thematically. Findings show that tailored classroom tasks improve students’ ability to use appropriate grammar and vocabulary, adjust communication to social contexts, organize coherent responses, and employ strategies to overcome communication barriers. The study highlights the critical role of classroom tasks in bridging the gap between theoretical learning and professional demands, offering practical insights for educators to design effective ESP curricula tailored to the hospitality sector.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how certain teaching methods to improve reading comprehension skills of EFL students at the Faculty of Education Champasack University. However, empirical evidence on the impact of instructional reading strategies on EFL students’ reading comprehension and learner perceptions in Lao university contexts remains limited. The use of specific selection of teaching methods, such as explicit strategy instruction and collaborative reading activities, creates the command of students to use strategies at different levels of reading comprehension. The study involved 25 final-year EFL students and 5 lecturers who were purposefully sampled. The data were collected using the following methods and instruments: open-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, pre-test and post-tests, classroom observations, and reading comprehension tests. The qualitative component of the study involved thematic analysis of the participants’ perceptions and classroom interactions, which provided triangulation for the study. The analysis of the data indicated that the reading comprehension instructional strategies had the most impact on the students’ ability to comprehend text at the literal and inferential levels, i.e. identifying the main ideas, supporting details, and making simple inferences. There was limited improvement in the students’ critical reading and advanced strategic behaviors, which demonstrated the need for extended and continued training to improve comprehension at the higher levels. The most important findings of the study also demonstrated the positive impact that structured and strategy-based instruction (SBI) has on EFL students’ reading comprehension. This research contributes important implications for EFL teaching in higher education which indicated the need for constant integration of strategy-focused and student-centered reading instruction.

Abstract

The "native speaker" ideal has long dominated English language teaching, reinforcing hierarchies of linguistic legitimacy and authority. Yet, as education in Indonesia rapidly shifts toward digital platforms, the urgency to reexamine this ideology becomes critical. In a post-pandemic context where online English learning has redefined interaction, identity, and pedagogy, this study deconstructs the persistence of the native-speaker norm in Indonesian digital classrooms through a postmodern narrative inquiry at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS). Drawing on Derrida's deconstruction and Lyotard's critique of metanarratives, it interrogates how teachers and students narrate their identities, anxieties, and negotiations within virtual learning environments. Findings reveal that native-speakerism is both reproduced and destabilized in digital classrooms. Online interaction dissolves the rigid binary between native and non-native English users, highlighting fluid, hybrid, and localized Englishes. Participants negotiate authority, identity, and legitimacy in ways that challenge traditional linguistic hierarchies. The study contributes at multiple levels: theoretically, by extending postmodern thought into digital ELT; pedagogically, by advocating for decolonized and inclusive practices; and socially, by positioning Indonesian classrooms as spaces of epistemic resistance where meaning and identity remain dynamic and unfinished.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the importance of fostering entrepreneurial intention among vocational high school students as an effort to prepare graduates who are not only ready to work but also capable of creating business opportunities. However, entrepreneurial intention among Grade XI MPLB students has not been evenly developed, so it is necessary to examine the factors that influence it. This study aimed to analyze the effect of self-efficacy, creativity, and learning environment on entrepreneurial intention among Grade XI MPLB students at SMK Negeri 4 Klaten. This research employed a quantitative approach with an explanatory research design. The population consisted of 72 Grade XI MPLB students, all of whom were used as the sample through a saturated sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires using a Likert scale and then analyzed using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with the assistance of SmartPLS. The results showed that self-efficacy, creativity, and learning environment had a positive and significant effect on entrepreneurial intention. Creativity was the most dominant variable with a path coefficient of 0.427, followed by learning environment with 0.424, and self-efficacy with 0.285. The R-square value of 0.555 indicated that these three variables were able to explain 55.5% of the variance in entrepreneurial intention. Thus, improving entrepreneurial intention among Grade XI MPLB students can be achieved through strengthening creativity, enhancing self-confidence, and creating a conducive learning environment.

Abstract

This study aims to explain George S. Counts’ Reconstructionist philosophy, the concept of differentiated learning, and its application within the Reconstructionist perspective in the context of the Merdeka Curriculum. The research employs a library study with a qualitative descriptive approach, using data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings reveal that Counts views education as an agent of social reconstruction that plays an active role in building a democratic and just society. His ideas align with the principles of differentiated learning, which respect students’ diversity, foster critical awareness, and promote social responsibility. The integration of these two concepts forms a humanistic and transformative educational paradigm, where teachers act as facilitators of social change and students become agents of renewal toward a civilized and equitable society.
