Abstract

This study aimed to explore the source of IL errors on male and female students’ pronunciation. The participants in this research were ten college students who were participated in an English speech contest organised by English Student Association of UNNES 2019. The ten participants consist of five male and five female students who came from different kinds of University in Indonesia. In this study, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data by using a video recorder as an instrument to collect the data. The result of this research showed that there were four sources of errors which influenced male and female students in producing IL errors on pronunciation. Those were L1 transfer, different form of plural between L1 and L2, the existence of sounds with the same phonetic features but different in distribution, and English foreign sounds. The second result described that the source of errors on male and female college students was mostly similar, and they had no significant differences. Last result showed that male students made more variation of IL errors on their pronunciation than female students.

Abstract

This study aims to motivate and improve student achievement in grade VI SD Negeri Malahayu 03 in learning science about simple electrical circuits. The low evaluation results are usually related to student behavior during learning. For example, students often go in and out of class alternately, talk to themselves, and do not dare to ask questions to the teacher when they have difficulties. To achieve success in learning in a class, it is necessary to use appropriate learning methods and use of teaching aids. Teaching aids that encourage students to be active in the learning process of Natural Sciences are concrete teaching aids. Based on the data of grade VI students of SD Negeri  Malahayu 03 who achieved the Minimum Completeness Criteria, from 44 students there were 19 students (43%) in the pre-cycle to 31 students (71%) in the first cycle and 40 students (100%) in the second cycle. The conclusion of this study shows that learning with concrete media can improve science learning outcomes for grade VI students of SD Negeri Malahayu 03, Banjarharjo District, Brebes Regency in the first semester of the 2019/2020 school year.

Abstract

This study focused on the analysis of non-observance Grice conversational maxims utilized by characters in Friends TV Show which involved the flouting maxim, violating maxim, infringing maxim, suspending maxim and opting out maxim. The results of the study showed that that almost all non-observance Grice conversational maxims were utilized in generating verbal humours in which opting out Grice conversational maxim was hardly found to create verbal humour. All types of verbal humours were successfully performed by the characters through flouting conversational maxim in which flouting manner and relation maxims concealed all types of verbal humours due to the irrelevant and ambiguous information delivered by the characters. In addition, the ways the characters being intentionally misleading without any implicature produced had generated humour for the audiences. Furthermore, literalness verbal humour was the most generated humour performed by the characters in infringing the maxims due to characters’ foolishness and lack of imagination. Moreover, suspending Grice conversational maxim was only found in suspended messages and voice call which was funny at the right setting in which there was no implicature produced and expectation to fulfil the maxim. However, there was opting out Grice conversational maxim discovered in this study due to the involvement of third party. For the further study, it is insinuated that the study of verbal humours could be investigated along with the non-verbal communication in order to see the connectivity among the verbal humour and non-verbal communication within conversation.

Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate the implementation of mind mapping strategy to teach writing in IELTS preparation class. It was a descriptive qualitative study on 20 students of IELTS preparation classes. Those students were divided into 6 classes based on their level after taking IELTS placement test. There were 3 teachers who taught 2 classes each. The data were collected by using classroom observations, students’ questionnaire, teachers’ interview, and document analysis. The present study revealed four results. First, mind mapping strategy was implemented by grouping the visual data to find out main trends, large increase or decrease, consistent direction and the relationship between modes and percentages in task 1; whereas in task 2, it was implemented by building students’ critical thinking to list main ideas which later on give supporting details for each main idea. Second, the students enjoyed teaching learning process through mind mapping strategy which resulted in passing guarantee program of having score improvement minimum 1 point, improved their analysis of data, enlarged their knowledge in academic writing topic, built their critical thinking and managed time well. Third, the problems during the implementation of those two strategies were teachers’ schedule, students’ activities at school before joining IELTS preparation class, time management, repetition ideas and phrases, laziness and boredom, and also illegible hand writing. Fourth, the solutions were: managing teachers’ and students’ schedule well, doing the test in time as instructions, reading many articles related with IELTS writing to broaden students’ knowledge, giving free writing, and practicing more..
