Abstract

Critical thinking skills and science literacy represent two pivotal aspects within education, seeking to cultivate students into knowledgeable, analytical individuals proficient in critical thinking when confronting diverse challenges and life circumstances. In the pursuit of enhancing critical thinking abilities, four fundamental aspects come into play, encompassing the capacity for problem-solving, decision-making, assumption analysis, as well as evaluation and inquiry skills. On the other hand, the literacy aspect comprises the articulation of phenomena through the application of chemical concepts, the resolution of problems through the utilization of chemical comprehension, and the critical analysis of strategies and benefits derived from chemistry education. The primary objective of this study are to analyze research trends on the influence of design thinking strategies in improving students' critical thinking and literacy skills through bibliometric analysis and to ascertain the impact of design thinking strategies on the augmentation of students' critical thinking skills and literacy.  The data sources used came from reputable journals from 2017-2023. The data obtained is secondary data analyzed with VOSviewer on research trends in critical thinking skills and scientific literacy, the number of publications, the type of research, and the samples used. The data analysis technique employed is Miles and Huberman's method, which consists of four stages: data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings of this research indicate that the utilization of design thinking strategies exerts a significant influence on students' critical thinking skills and literacy, employing 13 aspects applicable during the implementation of chemistry learning processes

Abstract

Chemistry is considered an abstract discipline, characterized by many concepts that make students uninterested in engaging in its learning. One approach to stimulate interest is through the application of contextual learning, where acquired knowledge is applied in a practical context. The purpose of this journal review is to provide insight into the implications of using contextual approaches in chemistry education, particularly about fostering student interest and engagement in the subject matter. The research design used in this study was a systematic literature review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) as a tool and guide for evaluating articles. The search for articles published in Scopus and Web of Science using the selected keywords: contextual approach, learning interest, and its extension based on the selected PICO framework. Based on the search results, 50 articles were obtained to be analyzed. Findings from diverse data consistently show that the application of contextual or everyday learning approaches contributes to increasing students' interest in learning, especially in the chemistry domain. Students' interest in learning chemistry has a significant influence on their learning outcomes, motivation, and critical thinking levels. This is because the greater the student's interest in learning chemistry, the stronger the curiosity and understanding of the subject matter. When students have a strong understanding of the subject matter, their critical thinking skills and chemical learning outcomes improve.

Abstract

This literature review aims to determine 1) forms of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) are applied to teach Science Process Skill (SPS), 2) forms of IBL implemented to teach specific SPS, and 3) the level of inquiry used in IBL. Based on these objectives, a literature review was carried out consisting of seven stages starting from determining the study questions, determining data sources, searching for articles from the database, selecting based on keywords, and determining which articles will be reviewed according to the criteria and whether there are answers to the study questions in the articles. There are 54 articles were obtained from this process which were then reviewed with the aid of the Atlasti.9 application. Several strategies can be used to carry out IBL, including POGIL, ADI, PCOI, and DOEI. These Various learning strategies are needed to support the attainment of SPS. IBL is implemented at various levels. Based on the review, it can be concluded that it prefers to use guided rather than free IBL, especially for students with new experience on inquiry.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and determine the feasibility of multiple representation-based electronic teaching materials using a guided inquiry model on the topic of acid and base for class XI high school. The method used in this research is research and development (R & D) which was developed by Thiagarajan and known as the 4D model. The 4D model consists of four stages: define, design, develop, and disseminate. This research instrument is a questionnaire to obtain a quantitative score used to determine the feasibility of teaching materials. The study results indicate that the developed teaching materials have a very good feasibility percentage. The developed teaching materials have been corrected by expert lecturers and revised according to the input given so that a decision is obtained that the teaching materials can be used. The feasibility of teaching materials is determined based on the assessment of the chemistry teacher as a reviewer and student responses. The assessment category obtained from the review by the chemistry teacher are very good with an average assessment percentage of 86.75%. Based on the results of field trials, the student responses show that the developed teaching materials were classified as very good category with an average percentage of 83.00%. Therefore, based on the validation and field trial results, the developed electronic teaching materials are feasible for use in class XI chemistry learning on the acid-base topic.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the level of preparedness of students in facing earthquake disasters in three schools in Bambanglipuro and to provide recommendations for improving student preparedness. This study utilized a quantitative descriptive method involving 124 students as research samples. The research instrument used was an open-ended questionnaire that had been validated by subject matter experts and language experts. The questionnaire consisted of 17 items taken from four parameters of preparedness: attitude (6 items), emergency response planning (5 items), disaster warning systems (1 item), and social mobilization (4 items). The data obtained were analyzed using ANOVA to determine the differences among the three junior high schools. Based on the research findings, it was found that overall, the three schools had similar levels of preparedness, with SMPN 2 Bambanglipuro being classified as "ready" at 80%, while SMP Muh Bambanglipuro and SMPN 1 Bambanglipuro were classified as "almost ready" at 79%. However, there were some parameters of preparedness where the students in all three schools were classified as "almost ready" or "ready," except for the attitude parameter in SMPN 2 Bambanglipuro, which was categorized as "low" at 53%.

Abstract

The research was carried out with the aim of finding out the use of mangrove ecotourism as a learning resource, because almost all regions in Indonesia manage mangrove ecosystem areas into ecotourism. The data collection technique uses proportional random sampling, with descriptive quantitative research methods. The research subjects used in this research process were the population of junior high school students and junior high school science teachers, with a sample of 118 students and 22 science teachers. The instrument used in this research is a questionnaire. The results obtained from the science teacher questionnaire stated that 80.8% of teachers had never integrated mangroves in the science learning process, reinforced by the results of the student questionnaire which stated that 83.2% of teachers had never presented mangrove material in the classroom. In this way, science teachers should change the way they deliver material using the Argument Driven Inquiry (ADI) learning model to make it easier for science teachers to utilize mangrove ecotourism as a learning resource through the stages of the learning model syntax.

Abstract

The need and availability of digital open materials such as e-books that contain original knowledge are very necessary in science learning, in order to create contextual learning. The basis for the need for e-books containing indigenous knowledge is the existence of various problems that occur in science learning. Some of the problems with science learning include, students still think it is difficult, science learning is irrelevant, uninteresting and monotonous, student’s comprehension ability is lacking and non-contextual science learning. This research aims to find out what needs teachers and students want so that science learning can be more innovative. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. The instruments used were interview guides, questionnaire sheets and science literacy tests. Data collection carried out in this research was interviews, questionnaires and scientific literacy tests. The sample involved in this research was 1 teacher and 53 students using a cluster random sampling technical.
