Abstract

This study addresses the issue of low teacher welfare in Indonesia, which has contributed to a decline in the quality of national education. This topic warrants examination because teachers serve as agents of social transformation, playing a pivotal role in the intellectual advancement of the nation. The study aims to analyze the problem of teacher welfare through the lens of Farid Esack’s liberation hermeneutics, seeking to understand the social justice dimensions within education. Employing a qualitative method based on library research, the study draws primarily on Esack’s works and literature regarding teacher welfare in Indonesia. The findings indicate that: (1) Farid Esack asserts that liberation hermeneutics is grounded in the principle of upholding justice, as the Qur’an sides with the oppressed or marginalized; (2) the welfare received by teachers is disproportionate to their heavy workloads; and (3) analyzing teacher welfare issues in Indonesia through liberation hermeneutics can help improve teacher well-being by advocating for their rights, given that teachers are marginalized by an inequitable system. Thus, this study contributes to expanding the application of Islamic hermeneutics to educational issues while underscoring the urgent need for policies that prioritize teacher welfare and justice.

Abstract

This article examines the concepts of nūr (light) and ẓulmah (darkness) in the thought of Ibn 'Aṭā'illāh as-Sakandarī and their implications for Islamic psychology. While historical studies of the Islamic soul (nafs) frequently emphasize ontological descriptions and normative ethics, they rarely articulate the functional dynamics through which spiritual components produce moral behavior. Addressing this gap, this study conceptually reconstructs the operational roles of nūr and ẓulmah in relation to the 'aql (intellect), baṣīrah (spiritual insight), and qalb (heart). Employing qualitative content analysis, the study systematically unitizes, categorizes, and synthesizes primary textual data from al-Ḥikam and its authoritative classical commentaries. The findings indicate that the human psyche is structured by internal faculties interacting with transcendental epistemic inputs (nūr) and egoistic distortions (ẓulmah). Nūr manifests in graduated forms (intibāh, iqbāl, wiṣāl) that progressively enhance moral cognition and activate the baṣīrah. Conversely, ẓulmah operates through base desires that obscure ethical orientation. Rather than positioning this framework in binary opposition to contemporary psychology, the study places as-Sakandarī in constructive dialogue with psychoanalysis and positive psychology, highlighting how Islamic psychology introduces a theocentric dimension to internal conflict and human flourishing. Ultimately, this study offers a conceptual reconstruction that bridges classical Shadhiliyyah thought with modern discourse on moral development, providing a theoretical foundation relevant to contemporary Islamic educational and therapeutic settings

Abstract

Abstract

Human, in the Qur'anic perspective, is described using various terms, one of which is Al-Basyar. The termAl-Basyar refers to the outward appearance of something beautiful and originates from the word basyarah, meaning skin. This study aims to examine and explore the concept of humans as Al-Basyar from theQur'anic perspective. This research employs a qualitative method with content analysis as the primaryapproach, focusing on the interpretation of Qur'anic verses. Primary data were derived from the Qur'an andcross-checked with secondary sources, including classical and contemporary interpretations. The findings ofstudy reveal that: (a) the word basyar appears 37 times in the Qur'an—31 times without the definitearticle (alif-lam), 5 times with the definite article, and once in the dual form; (b) there are 9 versesdescribing humans as basyar in general, highlighting their physical needs such as eating, having skin, engaging in sexual activity, and experiencing mortality; (c) 5 verses discuss the process of human creationinvolving soil, water, and the infusion of the spirit; (d) 23 verses discuss prophethood, including 13 depictingsocietal rejection and slander of prophets, and 10 emphasizing prophets as ordinary humans (basyar); (e)using a humanistic psychology perspective, basyar represents humans with basic physiological needs such aseating, drinking, sleeping, and sexual relations. This study contributes to Islamic scholarship by providingan integrative understanding of basyar as a term bridging Qur'anic theology and humanistic psychology.Furthermore, the use of content analysis as a methodological tool in exploring Qur'anic conceptsdemonstrates the potential for interdisciplinary approaches in Qur'anic studies.

Abstract

The Marriage is Scary phenomenon represents the fear of the young urban generation towards the institution of marriage which is considered no longer able to guarantee happiness, stability, and relevance to contemporary reality. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon through the lens of Jean-François Lyotard’s postmodernism, examine the underlying social factors and shifts in values, and analyze the implications for the understanding of marriage within Islamic legal philosophy, drawing upon maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah  and the thought of Fazlur Rahman.. Using qualitative-descriptive methods and an Islamic legal philosophy approach, this study explores how the postmodern deconstruction of moral and religious metanarratives causes the meaning of marriage as a sacred institution to begin to be questioned. The results of the analysis show: First, Lyotard's concept of incredulity toward metanarratives explains the shift in societal orientation towards more individualistic values that the Marriage is Scary phenomenon is a symptom of weakening trust in grand narratives, including religious and moral values that once made marriage a sacred institution. Second, this fear of marriage encourages the emergence of individualistic mindsets, delays in long-term commitments, and an increased preference for informal relationships that are considered more flexible. Third, the noble purpose of marriage within the framework of the maqasid al-syari'ah, particularly ḥifẓ al-nafs, ḥifẓ al-‘irḍ, dan ḥifẓ al-nasl, is no longer read as a living moral vision, but merely a normative doctrine. This research confirms that postmodern criticism of the narrative crisis can be used as momentum to reformulate a more substantive understanding of Islamic family law.

Abstract

Mehdi Hairi Yazdi is a prominent modern philosopher who sought to revive Islamic philosophy by integrating it with Western thought. Drawing on Suhrawardi’s philosophy of illumination, Mehdi explored its alignment with Western philosophical concepts. A key contribution of his thought to modern Islamic philosophy is the concept of Hudhuri science, an epistemology based on intuition and reason. This research examines the relevance of Mehdi’s epistemology to the Pesantren-based higher education tradition at Pesantren Zainul Hasan. Employing a qualitative method with content analysis, the study explores the relationship between Mehdi’s epistemology and the Pesantren’s educational practices. Findings indicate that the Pesantren Zainul Hasan tradition emphasizes critical reasoning, religious practices, and the pursuit of spiritual blessings, forming the foundation of its higher education epistemology. Both the Pesantren’s approach and Hudhuri epistemology share commonalities in acquiring knowledge through Sufistic and rational paths.
