Abstract

Objective: This study investigated the EFL students' perceptions of cultural literacy development in higher education. Method: The research design was an ethnographic study. The study was conducted in two private and state universities in Indonesia. The subjects were students from the English education department at two universities. The researcher chose four students from each university as research subjects who know and understand more about cultural literacy development. The technique for analyzing data in the ethnographic study was descriptive labels, selecting, identifying, generalizing, and noting. Result: This study's findings showed that in higher education, two students have a high perception, one has a moderate, and the last one has a low perception of cultural literacy development in the academic context. Each student’s category generally has a different impact on the development of their cultural literacy in the academic context. Novelty: This study produces the Makugawene (harmonic) Cultural Literacy model to develop EFL students' cultural literacy in higher education.

Abstract

This study explores teachers' perceptions and experiences implementing translanguaging strategies in rural English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms in south Buton, Indonesia. This research is a case study where the limit of this research is to focus on teacher perceptions and experiences in implementing translanguaging in English language learning in three secondary schools in rural areas in South Buton, Indonesia. The subjects of this research were three English teachers at three different schools in South Buton. This subject is expected to provide an overview of teachers' perceptions and experiences in implementing translanguaging in some rural schools in an Indonesian context. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and class observation with three experienced EFL teachers at three rural junior high schools in South Buton. The findings reveal that teachers perceive translanguaging as effectively enhancing students' learning comprehension, and the use of translanguaging can create inclusive and culturally responsive learning in EFL classrooms. The study highlights predominantly positive attitudes towards translanguaging, with teachers perceiving it as an effective tool for facilitating learning in linguistically diverse classrooms. Teachers report positive experiences, citing improved student understanding, increased engagement, and preservation of linguistic and cultural identities. The teachers' experience actively incorporated translanguaging strategies, using code-switching between English, Indonesian, and the local Cia-Cia language to enhance student comprehension. While acknowledging challenges such as balancing multiple languages and potential impacts on English proficiency development, teachers remain confident in translanguaging's effectiveness. This research is expected to contribute to the growing literature on translanguaging in EFL contexts and offer insights for educators in linguistically diverse settings.

Abstract

learning motivation, especially in the development of speaking skills in higher education. The purpose of this paper is to understand the students’ motivation in learning speaking skills in higher education using culturally responsive teaching identified as CRT. In this research the researchers used a qualitative method and used open-ended interviews to collect the data, conducting interviews with three participants, all students of an English language department. During the interviews, it was kept in mind that the focus was to gather information about the student’s experiences and perspectives on the adopted culturally responsive teaching approach. In this case, thematic analysis was used to analyze the collected data, since it helps to focus on the main themes and the repeated patterns that exist in the data collected. Three major areas were discussed as follows. The first theme is positive experiences with the culturally responsive teaching approach which indicates the positive experiences of the students as the students were made to feel valued and listened to in a learning environment, which incorporates student’s cultural realities as they learn. The second theme is appreciation of cultural diversity emphasizing that the students’ cultural background should be valued and used to increase their desire and interest in learning. The third constructed theme is the positive relationship with motivation, which depicts the clerical correlation between a culturally responsive teaching approach and students’ motivation level. Implications of the findings or discussion of the study These findings imply that culturally responsive teaching could improve students’ motivation toward learning speaking skills because of the more positive classroom environment. The findings of the research add to the existing literature on teaching practices for enhanced learning among college students, particularly arguing that there is a need to consider the cultural identities of students as important determinants of teaching practice. Subsequent studies should take up the following issues in understanding the long-term effects culturally responsive teaching yields on nearly all facets of language learning and the broader application of this pedagogical approach in various learning environments. The novelty of this research is that it emphasizes the importance of recognizing and integrating students’ cultural backgrounds as a key element in creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Abstract

This research explores the phenomenon of culture shock experienced by the Minangkabau community in Makassar, focusing on its stages and effects. The research employs a qualitative ethnographic design, gathering data through interviews, observations, and documentation to understand the cultural adaptation process. Guided by Kalervo Oberg's U-Curve theory of adjustment, the findings reveal that Minangkabau migrants undergo four distinct stages of culture shock: honeymoon, frustration, adjustment, and adaptation/acceptance. In the honeymoon phase, migrants experience excitement and fascination as they engage with Makassarese culture. However, this enthusiasm fades in the frustration phase, where language barriers, communication differences, and unfamiliar social norms create stress and isolation. The adjustment phase marks a turning point, as migrants develop coping strategies, learn local customs, and build social networks. Finally, the adaptation and acceptance phase sees them achieving a balance between preserving their cultural identity and integrating into the host society. The research concludes that while culture shock presents initial challenges, it ultimately fosters personal growth, resilience, and cultural competence. The findings underscore the importance of social support, cultural awareness, and adaptability in facilitating successful cultural transitions. This research highlights how culture shock, despite its difficulties, can lead to positive outcomes, enriching both the migrants' lives and the multicultural landscape of Makassar.

Abstract

This research investigates the challenges faced by new students of the English Language Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM) in writing essays. Writing is a complex skill that involves the organization of ideas, proper use of grammar, and clarity of expression. New students often struggle with various aspects of essay writing, which can hinder their academic progress. The study employs a qualitative research approach, focusing on 142 students from the second semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. Data was collected through interviews and analyzed descriptively. The findings reveal several key challenges that students encounter when writing essays. These include difficulties with English grammar, low vocabulary, challenges organizing ideas, and issues expressing thoughts clearly. Additionally, students face non-technical obstacles such as a lack of confidence, poor time management, and the physical strain of writing. The study highlights that the essay writing process is multifaceted, requiring not only technical skills but also critical thinking and self-management abilities. Understanding these challenges provides valuable insights for educators in designing more effective teaching strategies. By addressing both the technical and psychological barriers to writing, lecturers can help students improve their essay-writing skills and better prepare them for higher academic demands. The research emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive approach to teaching writing, one that considers the diverse challenges faced by students and aims to enhance their overall academic performance.
