Abstract

This research focuses on how nonverbal communication is important in the military, particularly among members of the TNI in their neighbourhoods. The researcher used interviews to collect data using open-ended questions. The researcher identified that saluting is more than just a greeting; it shows respect for superiors and tradition, which promotes a disciplined and united military community. The research underlined the adaptation of nonverbal communication, especially hand signals, in operational settings for efficient and silent exchange of information. In summary, nonverbal cues, such as saluting, play a huge role in keeping the military community disciplined and united for successful operations.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out how the Use of Kinesics as Nonverbal Communication in the Classroom at the University of Muhammadiyah Bone. This research was a descriptive qualitative with 10 students as participants. They were taken by applying a purposive sampling technique. The research instruments are questionnaires and interviews. The result of this study shows that kinesics is an important element in non-verbal communication that can provide additional information and nuance to verbal messages. A deep understanding of body language can improve a person's ability to read and respond to communication more effectively.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the needs of students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs.) Barana. This research used a qualitative descriptive research design with 10 seventh-grade students as the subjects in this research. In collecting the data, the research instruments in this research were interview guides. The interview was conducted with a student to find out their needs for English lessons. The researcher found that the needs of MTs. Barana students related to English lessons were the need for images in the textbook, vocabulary list to assist students knowing the meaning, more emphasis on pairs learning and learning should more focus on how to read and pronounce the words in English. Additionally, the students also revealed their needs for English lessons. First, the students’ necessities are English as a subject at school thus they need it to pass the exam, go abroad, and achieve their dreams as well as they want to learn English because never learned it in Elementary school. The second, is students’ lack or difficulty, they are difficult to find the meaning, read the passage and pronounce the word in the textbook. The third, students’ wants are images to assist them in guessing the meaning. The fourth, student skills needed are vocabulary, reading and pronunciation. The last, student learning styles are listening or auditory learning and they prefer to learn in pairs compared with individually as well as in groups.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out strategies for students in writing recount text. This research design used a descriptive qualitative method. The subject of the research was students in Grade 8th in SMP Laniang Makassar in the academic year 2022/2023. The sample was 22 students in two classes and used purposive sampling to gain the data. The data was collected using interviews. Based on the researcher’s result, the researcher found that there were various strategies to overcome problems encountered by the students in writing recount text, namely the strategy of (1) making lessons visually compelling, (2) identifying important ideas, (3) changing vocabulary by students, (4) changing evaluations, and the last (5) linking previous knowledge. The positive response from students to this strategy indicates how crucial it is to encourage the development of comprehensive and in-depth writing skills. As a result, implementing an adaptive and responsive learning strategy can help students become better writers and produce graduates who are prepared to meet the demands of both academic and professional English.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out teachers' perceptions of English teachers' competence in senior high schools in Pangkep. This study uses a qualitative method. The population of this study is teachers in senior high schools in Pangkep, with the sample consisting of English teachers in SMAN 2 Pangkep, SMAN 9 Pangkep, and SMAN 10 Pangkep. The research instrument used is interviews. The results show that English teachers' perceptions of competence include four aspects: professional competence, personality competence, pedagogical competence, and social competence, all of which are important and interrelated to carry out tasks effectively and professionally.

Abstract

This research was to analyze the effect of critical thinking strategy on students’ motivation in speaking class in the first year of the English Education Department, UIN Alauddin Makassar. It employed a quantitative approach with a true experimental design. Its population was the first-year students of the English Education Department consisting of 20 students as the experimental group and 20 students as the control group. A questionnaire was used to find out the students’ motivation to see the effect of critical thinking strategy in speaking class. This research results show that the mean score of students’ motivations in the experimental class was categorized into a positive level (80.75) in the pre-questionnaire and a very positive level in post- questionnaire (97) meaning that there was a significant increase in students’ motivation in speaking class. Conversely, the student's motivation in the control group was categorized into a very positive level (83.45) in the pre-test and a very positive level (88.6) in the post-questionnaire meaning that the student’s motivation was stable. Moreover, the calculation statistics of the Mann-Whitney U test of students’ motivation are valued at sig. 0.020 < 0.050 figuring out that critical thinking strategy affected the students’ speaking motivation in the control group. These findings take into account that the students were to speak comprehensively as a discipline, to maintain speaking achievement as a satisfaction, and to create a feeling of safety in the speaking process as a security.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the perceptions of class VIII A students at MTs Negeri 1 Sidrap on the use of the snowball throwing technique in teaching reading skill. This research design uses quantitative research methods. The sample of this study was 25 students in class VIII A as experimental group, samples were taken using cluster random sampling techniques. Data collection through questionnaires. The researcher used a questionnaire to measure students’ perception. The questionnaire that the researcher used 2 types of questions in the questionnaire are positive questionnaire and negative questionnaire, 10 positive questions and 10 negative questions. From the results of the questionnaire, the students' perceptions regarding the use of the snowball throwing technique were positive perceptions to the students.

Abstract

This research aims to discover the teacher’s pedagogical competence and the ways the teacher applied the pedagogical competence in the classroom. This research was conducted under the qualitative case study design. The subject of this research involved an EFL teacher in SMP Negeri 2 Pangkep using purposive sampling. The data were gathered from classroom observations and interviews. The findings showed that the teacher demonstrates a fair level of competence in understanding students’ characteristics, learning theories and approaches, curriculum development, assessment and evaluation development, utilizing technology, and learning reflection while showing a poor level of competence in creating engaging learning activities and developing into students' potential. However, the teacher excels in communication with students. The findings also showed the ways the teacher applied the pedagogical competence through various practices based on nine pedagogical competencies: understanding the students’ characteristics, understanding theories and learning approaches, developing curriculum, developing assessments and evaluations, utilizing technology in learning, communicating with the students, developing engaging and educative learning activities, developing students’ potential, and learning reflections. However, there are areas for improvement, particularly in creating engaging learning activities and identifying and developing students' potential. In conclusion, the teacher implements strategies to maintain a supportive learning environment based on the teacher’s pedagogical competence. These findings underscore the importance of comprehensive pedagogical development to enhance teaching effectiveness.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to find out why teachers adapted materials in teaching English at secondary school and how teachers adapted the materials. The researcher applied a case study qualitative method. To achieve the research objectives, the data were collected by comparing documents and interviews. English teachers of MAN 2 Makassar who were using adapted materials, implementing the Merdeka Curriculum, and teaching in grades X and XI served as the study’s subject. The result of this study showed that: (1) The reasons teachers adapted the materials are the students’ condition which is more complex nowadays, the unsuitability of existing materials to students’ English proficiency, and the limitation of time allocation. (2) The first teacher applied adding, modifying, reordering, and simplifying, while the second teacher applied deleting and simplifying in adapting the existing materials.
