Abstract

Background: Cytokines storm becomes the most common cause of mortality in sepsis patients treated in the intensive care unit (ICU). Cytokines storm is characterized by an excessive elevation in the immunocompetent cells, including monocyte. Ketamine, as a sedating agent, has immunosuppressive properties. This study was conducted to determine the effect of ketamine on monocyte count in septic patients in the ICU.Methods: This is a quantitative case-control  study of 30 patients treated in the ICU. The study subjects were divided into control (n=15) and treatment (n=15) groups. The treatment group received ketamine HCl therapy at 0.3 mg/kg body weight/hour. The mean monocytes were counted at 0, 24, and 48 hours post-therapy. Data analysis used an independent sample t-test with α=5%.Result: Administration of ketamine therapy in septic patients treated in the ICU showed a decrease in the monocytes during observation from 0 to 48 hours post-therapy. Administration of ketamine at 48 hours had a significantly lower monocyte (5.21%) compared to control (7.67%) (p=0.012).Conclusion: Ketamine administration reduces the monocytes count in septic patients treated in the intensive care unit. Ketamine is expected to be a therapeutic option in sepsis patients.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the reading comprehension levels of Class VIII students in descriptive texts at SMP Negeri 7 Medan. Reading is a fundamental skill for language learners, especially for students learning English as a foreign language. However, many students face difficulties in comprehending descriptive texts, such as identifying key details, understanding the structure, and drawing accurate conclusions. These challenges are attributed to limited vocabulary, lack of familiarity with descriptive text conventions, and ineffective reading strategies. This research will evaluate students' comprehension levels and the effectiveness of current teaching strategies and materials. The findings are expected to provide insights that contribute to the improvement of reading instruction and strategies, benefiting both students and educators, and enhancing literacy education in junior high schools across Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of training aimed at enhancing English speaking skills among students at SMAN 6 Betara, Tanjung Jabung Barat, through the Synectics model. The Synectics approach, known for fostering creativity and critical thinking, encourages students to explore abstract concepts and express their thoughts through metaphors and analogies. This method not only promotes language proficiency but also enhances students' confidence and engagement in the learning process. The training program involved interactive activities, structured group discussions, and creative exercises, which allowed students to practice speaking in a supportive environment. Pre- and post-training assessments indicated significant improvements in vocabulary usage, pronunciation, and overall speaking fluency. The findings suggest that the implementation of the Synectics model in language education can lead to more dynamic and effective learning experiences, ultimately contributing to better communication skills among high school students. The study highlights the importance of innovative teaching strategies in language education and recommends further integration of creative methodologies to improve speaking abilities in non-native English contexts. Future research could explore the long-term effects of such training and its impact on students' overall academic performance.
