Abstract

Harvesting vibration energy from vehicle suspensions is a strategy to reduce dependence on fossil-fuel electricity. This study aims to optimize the electrical output of an Electromagnetic Regenerative Shock absorber (ERSA) installed on the rear suspension of a Toyota Avanza using the Taguchi method. Three control factors were investigated number of coil turns (1500–2500 turns), wire diameter (0.2–0.4 mm), and air gap (2–6 mm) arranged in an L9 orthogonal array with a larger-the-better criterion for output voltage. Signal-to-noise and ANOVA analyses indicate that coil turns and wire diameter contribute 55.10% and 38.96% of the voltage variation, whereas the influence of air gap is small. The optimal combination A3B3C3 (2500 turns, 0.4-mm wire, 6-mm air gap) yields a verification voltage of 5.30 V with a 5% error relative to the predicted response. These findings show that ERSA has potential as a low-power automotive energy-harvesting system when combined with power-conditioning and storage circuits.

Abstract

This study analyzes the structural strength of an electric bicycle trainer frame used as an instructional medium in vocational high schools. The frame is constructed from steel pipes and evaluated through Finite Element Analysis simulation using SolidWorks 2021. Three materials are compared, namely Chromoly Steel SAE 4130, Aluminum 6061-T6, and Hi-Ten Steel (AISI 1015). A static load of 120 kg is applied at the rider’s seat with fixed supports at frame joints to obtain the distribution of Von Mises Stress, displacement, and safety factor. The results indicate that Chromoly Steel SAE 4130 provides the most favorable combination of Stress, deformation, and structural safety, while Aluminum 6061-T6 exhibits the largest displacement and Hi-Ten Steel the lowest safety margin. The minimum safety factor of all materials is still below one, so the frame design requires optimization. These findings guide material selection and frame redesign for engineering practice–oriented vocational education.

Abstract

The Competency Test for Teacher Professional Education Program Participants (UKPPPG) is an essential stage for assessing the professionalism of vocational teachers, including those in the field of automotive engineering. Adequate preparation is required to ensure that teachers meet competency standards while also improving the quality of learning in vocational schools. This study aims to describe the preparation strategies facilitated by the Automotive Engineering Subject Teacher Forum (MGMP) in West Sumatra and to identify the challenges teachers face in preparing for the UKPPPG. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. The subjects consisted of 15 automotive teachers who were actively involved in MGMP activities and preparing for the UKPPPG. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was carried out through coding, theme identification, and verification using source and method triangulation. The findings indicate that MGMP preparation strategies include lesson plan development, microteaching, and exam discussions. These activities improved teachers’ pedagogical skills; however, limitations such as inadequate workshop facilities, conventional teaching materials, and the lack of computer-based simulations hindered optimal preparation. This study concludes that MGMP plays a significant role in preparing teachers for the UKPPPG, although its effectiveness remains limited to pedagogical aspects. A more comprehensive strategy involving curriculum renewal, access to updated materials, psychological support, and digital technology integration is needed.

Abstract

Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors are increasingly utilized across various applications due to their high efficiency and reliability. However, their control requires precise handling, especially during the commutation process. This study presents a detailed simulation design for BLDC motor control using MATLAB Simulink, focusing on the Six-Step Commutation method and PID-based speed regulation. The methodology involves constructing an open-loop model to analyze commutation behavior, followed by a closed-loop system using PID controllers with automatic parameter tuning. The simulation demonstrates accurate replication of hall sensor signals, back-EMF waveforms, switching patterns, and motor responses. Results reveal that the PID controller effectively maintains target speed across varying reference inputs and load conditions, while phase current and electromagnetic torque increase proportionally with speed and load. Results confirm correct switching in open loop and show that, in closed loop, the controller maintains speed within ±2% of the target with brief, well-damped transients. Phase current and torque responses scale with speed and load, informing practical refinements (anti-windup, ripple mitigation, soft-commutation timing). The findings certify that simulation is a vital step to ensure functional logic and hardware readiness, minimizing risks and enhancing system performance prior to physical implementation.

Abstract

The rapid increase in motorcycle use in Indonesia has created two major challenges: fossil fuel depletion and rising air pollution. While previous studies mainly focused on environmental impacts, engine durability remains underexplored. This study aims to evaluate the effects of combining platinum spark plugs, +2° ignition timing, E25 biogasoline, and a Water Injection system using an ultrasonic mist maker on the durability of four-stroke motorcycle engines. An experimental method was conducted by comparing standard conditions (pertalite) with the combined treatment over 110 hours of operation. Results indicated a significant reduction in carbon deposits, with mass decreasing from 680 mg to 260 mg and volume from 378 mm³ to 144 mm³, representing a reduction of over 61%. These findings highlight that the integration of biogasoline and Water Injection not only reduces carbon deposit formation but also extends engine lifespan and supports environmentally friendly transportation technologies.
