Abstract

Preparing prospective teachers with a solid understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and strong geographic literacy is essential for promoting sustainable development. This study explores how reflective practice, embedded in the Lesson Study (LS) model, can enhance geography education students’ comprehension of SDGs. Using a qualitative approach, the research was conducted through two LS cycles, each comprising the standard stages: Plan, Do, and See. Data were collected via observation sheets and classroom video recordings to assess student engagement and instructional effectiveness. In the first cycle, several challenges emerged, including poor time management, insufficient geographic literacy, discomfort from observer presence, and difficulty linking global case studies to SDG concepts. The second cycle introduced targeted improvements: the use of visual maps, enriched SDG-related content, and integration of digital technologies. These adaptations significantly enhanced student engagement and understanding. Findings demonstrate that the LOC-R (Local Context–Reflective) learning model, when implemented through LS, effectively helps students relate geographic knowledge to real-world sustainability challenges. Reflective collaboration among educators also contributed to improved instructional strategies. The LS-based LOC-R model shows strong potential in advancing both geographic literacy and critical thinking in the context of education for sustainable development. This approach equips future educators to analyze global issues and devise informed, sustainable solutions.

Abstract

Flood is a recurring hydrometeorological disaster in urban areas of Indonesia, including Bekasi City and Regency. This study employs a realism-based geographic approach to analyze the causes, impacts, and formulate mitigation strategies for floods occurring in Bekasi in early March 2025. Using qualitative methods with a case study design, data were collected through observations, interviews, and document studies. The results reveal that floods are caused by a combination of high rainfall intensity, rapid urbanization reducing water catchment areas, poor drainage infrastructure, and topographical vulnerabilities. Beyond physical and economic damages, the disaster severely disrupted educational activities, affecting hundreds of schools and thousands of students. The realism approach highlights the importance of empirical data in understanding flood patterns and designing comprehensive mitigation strategies. Recommended solutions include improving drainage capacity, enforcing land-use regulations, river normalization, and integrating disaster risk reduction (DRR) education into school curricula to build community resilience. This research contributes to evidence-based disaster mitigation efforts in urban planning and education sectors.

Abstract

The research compares the use of two projection methods, namely Arithmetic Geometric Curve (AGC) and Statistical Straight Line (SSL), in projecting the Human Development Index (HDI) in Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan Province. In human development planning, choosing the right projection method is important. HDI is a complex indicator, with its growth not always linear, and that comparing the AGC method, which is more flexible to changing trends, with the SSL method, which is simpler but based on linear assumptions, will give an overview of the accuracy of the projection. This study investigates three main indicators of HDI, namely health, education, and a decent standard of living, through several main variables such as Life Expectancy, Expected Years of Schooling, Average Years of Schooling, and Per Capita Expenditure. The results between the two projections are significantly different. The projection of the AGC is more optimistic with a sharper growth trend, while the projection in the SSL method tends to be more stable and consistent. The AGC method indicates faster target achievement results, while the SSL method provides more accurate, realistic estimates. Thus, the HDI projection for Sanggau Regency shows that with the more aggressive AGC method, the HDI target of 70 can be achieved in 2025, while the SSL method leads to achieving the target in 2027. This study can provide the basis for regional development planning by considering the accuracy and stability of projections in achieving sustainable development.

Abstract

The global tourism industry is undergoing a significant shift toward sustainable tourism concepts that emphasize not only economic growth and visitor numbers but also environmental and cultural preservation. This study aims to examine the effects of various dimensions of Memorable Tourism Experience (MTE)—including hedonism, involvement, knowledge, local culture, meaningfulness, novelty, and refreshment—on visitor satisfaction. Additionally, it explores how visitor satisfaction impacts Positive Word of Mouth (PWOM) and Revisit Intention at Udjo Ecoland, a bamboo conservation destination in Bandung. Using a quantitative survey of 206 respondents, data were analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS. Results indicate that active involvement (β=0.274; p=0.000), knowledge (β=0.128; p=0.043), local culture (β=0.205; p=0.002), and novelty (β=0.143; p=0.025) significantly affect visitor satisfaction, while hedonism, meaningfulness, and refreshment do not show significant effects. Visitor satisfaction strongly drives PWOM (β=0.427; p=0.000) and revisit intention (β=0.422; p=0.000), with PWOM also reinforcing revisit intention (β=0.422; p=0.000). Mediation analysis confirms visitor satisfaction as a mediator linking MTE to promotional behavior and visitor loyalty. These findings underscore the importance of developing interactive, educational, and culturally rooted tourism experiences to enhance visitor loyalty and sustain conservation destinations. This study contributes theoretically and offers practical recommendations for destination managers to design responsible and value-added sustainable tourism strategies. Abstract

This study investigates the impact of contextual STEM training designed for Subject Teacher Forum Subject Teacher Forum Geography teachers in Ternate, Indonesia, an island region facing geographical and educational challenges, where empirical evidence on localized and contextualized STEM professional development remains limited.  The research employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design with 20 participating teachers. Data were collected through a 20-item multiple-choice test validated by experts and analyzed using gain scores, inferential statistics, and effect size estimation. The results demonstrated a substantial improvement in teachers’ STEM knowledge, with the mean pretest score increasing from 8.90 to 13.20 (N-Gain = 0.59, moderate-to-high). Inferential analysis confirmed a significant improvement (p < 0.001) with a very large effect size (Cohen’s d = 2.44). Interestingly, teachers from non-education backgrounds achieved slightly higher learning gains compared to education majors, suggesting that contextual STEM concepts can be effectively acquired regardless of prior specialization. The findings confirm that short-term, localized, and context-based training is effective in enhancing teachers’ pedagogical knowledge, reducing initial disparities, and empowering educators to design relevant STEM-based geography learning. This model contributes to the growing body of research on STEM professional development, advances geography education through context-based pedagogy, and offers a replicable framework for teacher capacity building in island and under-resourced regions.

Abstract

The study of spatial inequality as a unique study of the discipline of geography that can be embedded in geography textbooks. Currently, geography textbooks in high schools are considered to still focus on instilling complex scientific concepts and are still not contextual, and there is little encounter of actual problems and understanding of local geography. This is very different when compared to geography textbooks used by students in various countries, referring to "Geography for Life" which is more adapted to the current and future needs of students. This study was conducted with the aim of determining the development of the concept of geography textbooks that include the problem of spatial inequality at the high school level. The research method used a literature study to form a good textbook concept that is ready to be developed. The results of the study indicate that the development of textbooks can be done by considering various technical matters related to the embedding of theory and practice that are adapted to the applicable curriculum. It is concluded that the development of the concept of textbooks containing the problem of spatial inequality is carried out systematically to meet students' learning needs.

Abstract

This study examines the social, cultural, and economic dynamics of communities in the East Java Horseshoe region, encompassing both valley and coastal areas. Previous research has rarely examined the interrelations among these communities, particularly in the context of globalization and modernization, underscoring the need for this study. The purpose of this research is to identify differences in lifestyle, interaction, and economic interdependence between agrarian, collective-based valley communities and coastal communities that are more receptive to modernization. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed descriptively and interpretively. The findings reveal fundamental differences: coastal communities demonstrate openness to modern technology, while valley communities preserve traditional values, and both are bound by reciprocal economic dependence in the trade of agricultural and marine products. These findings highlight the necessity of a valley–coastal synergy to support sustainable development. Practical recommendations include developing ecotourism grounded in local wisdom, providing cultural education for younger generations, and conserving the environment through prudent resource management. This research contributes strategically to local policy-making and serves as a reference for understanding community adaptation to global changes.
