Abstract

Environmental conservation and disaster mitigation still emphasize science and technology, while the potential of the socio-cultural wealth within communities remains underutilized. This shows a substantial gap, as active community involvement, rooted in socio-cultural wealth, is essential for effective environmental conservation and disaster mitigation. To address the existing gap, this research aims to identify, analyze, and interpret the values of Sundanese Indigenous laws (Pikukuh) that can be utilized and relevant for these efforts. This study used a qualitative method with a case study design in Kampung Naga, Baduy, Kuta, and Cikondang. The results showed that Pikukuh embodied important values for environmental conservation efforts. These rules played a significant role in conserving forests, improving vegetation conditions, enhancing rainwater absorption, ensuring soil stability, preventing erosion, and maintaining the groundwater cycle. These principles are crucial for mitigating natural disasters like landslides, floods, droughts, and climate change. Pikukuh principles need to be incorporated more broadly and actively applied in policies and strategic initiatives to advance sustainable development, as this goes beyond romanticizing traditions and is essential for securing a sustainable future life

Abstract

This study aims to develop a local potential-based learning model to enhance elementary school students' critical thinking skills. Local potential-based learning is expected to utilize the wisdom and resources available in the surrounding environment as relevant and engaging learning materials for students. This learning model is designed to strengthen student involvement in the learning process, foster curiosity, and develop essential analytical and problem-solving skills for critical thinking. The approach involves integrating local materials, such as history, culture, and local social issues, into teaching activities. This study uses a simplified development method divided into three stages: preliminary study, development stage, and model effectiveness testing stage. The development stage begins with needs analysis, design, trial, and model evaluation. The research findings indicate that during the model evaluation stage, the effectiveness test results in SDN Bunikasih 1 as Experiment Class 1 reached an average % N-gain value of 55.05%, and model evaluation in Experiment Class 2 SDN Sukawangi 2 showed an average % N-gain value of 55.09%. Thus, the application of the local potential-based learning model is quite effective in helping improve students' critical thinking skills. The conclusion of this study is expected to contribute significantly to the development of a more contextual curriculum, enhance students' critical thinking skills, and encourage them to better understand and appreciate the local potential in their surroundings.

Abstract

Spatial thinking skills are essential in everyday life. These skills can be improved through geography learning. Various studies on efforts to improve spatial thinking skills through geography education have been conducted in Indonesia; however, none have specifically examined the various models, teaching materials, and learning outcomes. Through a comprehensive review of previous findings, this study was conducted to fill this gap. The results of this study can be helpful for teachers and researchers in further developing geography education. This study employs a qualitative research design, specifically a document study or literature review. Publish or Perish software is used in the process of exploring or conducting literature searches. Through the initial search process, a total of 61 documents were obtained. These documents were then reviewed individually, resulting in a total of 16 documents that met the inclusion criteria. The results of the study showed that the most widely applied geography learning model was Project-Based Learning, followed by Discovery Learning and EarthComm. The teaching materials used are Disaster and Disaster Management, Basics of Mapping, Remote Sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere Dynamics and Its Impact on Life, and Potential of Indonesian Marine Waters. Through the application of the learning model, various improvements were obtained in several indicators of spatial skills. The Project-Based Learning model is the most successful approach in improving various indicators of spatial thinking skills, including Analogy, Aura, Pattern, Association, Form, and Analysis.

Abstract

Cultural literacy is an essential competence for students in the 21st century to navigate globalization while preserving regional cultural identity. The lack of students’ knowledge and concern for local culture can weaken national character values. This study aims to analyze the cultural literacy skills of primary school students in science, environment, technology, and society (IPAS) learning, focusing on conceptual understanding, knowledge of one’s own culture, and the implementation of cultural awareness. This research employed a quantitative descriptive method involving 30 fifth-grade primary school students as research subjects. Data were collected through tests and questionnaires, then analyzed using SPSS version 26 to determine the mean, maximum-minimum values, validity, reliability, and normality tests. The results showed that all instruments were valid and reliable, and the data were normally distributed. Based on the average results, 60% of students were categorized as moderate and 40% as low in their cultural literacy skills through the test, while the questionnaire results showed 66.7% moderate and 33.3% low. These findings suggest the importance of developing adaptive, culture-based learning models to enhance cultural literacy skills among primary school students.

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on improving fifth-grade students’ geographic literacy skills. The research employed a quasi-experimental method with a pre-test and post-test control group design. Participants were 60 fifth-grade students from two public elementary schools in West Java, Indonesia, selected through purposive sampling. The experimental group (n = 30) received PBL intervention, while the control group (n = 30) was taught through Discovery Learning. Data were collected using a geographic literacy test that was previously tested for validity and reliability. The intervention was implemented over nine meetings, each lasting 90 minutes. The data were analysed using normality and homogeneity tests, paired t-test, and N-Gain analysis. The results show a significant improvement in geographic literacy in the experimental class (p < 0.05), with a mean N-Gain of 72.6% (quite effective), while the control class scored 35.3% (ineffective). Furthermore, the post-test mean score of the experimental group (79.17) was significantly higher than that of the control group (68.67). The study concludes that the PBL model is more effective than Discovery Learning in enhancing geographic literacy skills of elementary school students.

Abstract

Abstract

This study developed a geography instruction framework based on geographic literacy to enhance high school students' life skills. This study was motivated by the limited relevance of conventional geography education to students’ real-life needs, particularly for those who do not pursue higher education. The model was designed using the ASSURE framework, which includes learner analysis, objective formulation, selection and utilization of media, student engagement, systematic evaluation, and revision. The participants consisted of 37 11th-grade students from SMA Negeri 7 Tasikmalaya.. Data were collected using questionnaires constructed based on indicators of geographic literacy and essential life skills questionnaires. The results from the limited trial indicated significant improvements in both hard skills (spatial data analysis and decision-making) and soft skills (communication and collaboration). The model systematically integrates geographic content, geospatial skills, and spatial perspectives into contextual and cooperative learning activities. These findings demonstrate that geographic literacy can serve as an effective pedagogical approach to equip students with essential 21st-century life skills. The model offers practical guidance for geography teachers in designing learning experiences that are more relevant, applicable, and meaningful.
