Abstract

Although writing instruction in elementary education has been the focus of numerous prior studies, research specifically exploring the integration of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model with Big Book media to enhance critical attitudes and improve capitalization and punctuation skills among lower-grade students remains limited. This study aims to describe the implementation of the PBL model supported by Big Book media, evaluate its effectiveness in fostering critical thinking, and analyze the improvement in writing skills among second-grade students at SDN Mangkang Wetan 03, Semarang. A mixed-methods approach with an embedded concurrent design was employed, involving 25 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, field notes, and written tests (pretest and posttest). Qualitative data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, while quantitative data were processed using N-Gain analysis and descriptive statistics. The results indicate that most students achieved a "Good" category in critical attitude, with an average writing score increase of 22.04 points and an N-Gain score of 0.59, categorized as moderate. The percentage of students achieving learning mastery increased from 68% to 88%. These findings demonstrate that integrating the PBL model with Big Book media effectively enhances students’ active participation and mastery of basic writing conventions. The study concludes that contextual, problem-based instructional approaches supported by concrete visual media are essential for effective language instruction in lower elementary grades. Its implications contribute theoretically to the development of constructivist-based learning and offer practical guidance for teachers in addressing challenges in early writing instruction at the elementary level.

Abstract

The low levels of critical reasoning and writing skills among primary school students in Indonesian language instruction are often attributed to the predominance of conventional teaching methods that fail to foster reflective thinking and written expression. This study aims to describe the implementation of leaflet-based teaching materials grounded in the Think–Talk–Write (TTW) model and to analyze their effectiveness in enhancing students’ critical reasoning attitudes and scrambled-word writing skills. A mixed methods approach with a Sequential Explanatory design was employed, involving 28 third-grade students at SD Negeri Mangkang Wetan 02. Data were collected through classroom observation, writing tests, and interviews, and analyzed using a paired sample t-test and the interactive analysis model of Miles and Huberman. The results show a significant improvement in students’ critical reasoning attitudes, with 82% achieving ratings in the good to very good categories, and an increase in average writing scores from 67.5 to 85.7 (N-Gain = 0.56; moderate category). The implementation of the TTW model supported by leaflet materials fostered an active, reflective, and collaborative learning environment that encouraged logical thinking and systematic writing. These findings demonstrate that TTW-based leaflet instructional materials are effective in strengthening literacy and higher-order thinking skills in Indonesian language learning at the primary school level.

Abstract

The Think–Talk–Write (TTW) instructional model has been widely studied; however, research that specifically integrates deep learning supported by the student worksheet Rangkai Lingkungan Rumahku, combined with visual media word cards to enhance critical reasoning attitudes and writing skills among primary school students, remains limited. This study aims to describe the implementation of the TTW model assisted by student worksheets stimulated by visual word card media, and to assess its effectiveness in improving the critical reasoning and writing abilities of third-grade students. A mixed methods approach was employed over two cycles, involving 28 students selected through total sampling. Data were collected using observation sheets, interviews, and student worksheet-based tests (pretest–posttest), and analyzed through descriptive quantitative and qualitative methods. The findings indicate that the implementation of the TTW model was systematic, active, and collaborative, significantly enhancing students’ critical reasoning and writing performance, with average scores rising from 62.14 to 83.89. These results support Vygotsky’s theory of social constructivism, which highlights the role of social interaction in knowledge construction, and broaden the understanding of deep learning approaches at the primary level. The study concludes that collaboration in thinking, speaking, and writing serves as a critical strategy for developing students’ reasoning capacity and literacy skills. The implications extend to strengthening constructivist theory in the context of literacy education and provide practical guidance for teachers in designing active, learner-centered instruction. Additionally, the study opens avenues for further exploration of visual media and contextual worksheets in fostering 21st-century competencies in primary education.

Abstract

The ability to write personal emails and foster creative attitudes in Indonesian language learning among primary school students remains suboptimal. Students often struggle with idea development, structuring emails appropriately, and conveying messages using effective language. Additionally, the predominance of teacher-centered instruction limits student participation and hinders creative potential. This study aims to: (1) describe the implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model assisted by flipbooks in teaching personal email writing; (2) analyze the effectiveness of flipbook-based PjBL in enhancing sixth-grade students’ creative attitudes; and (3) examine its effectiveness in improving personal email writing skills. A mixed methods approach was employed, involving 30 sixth-grade students at SD Negeri Mangkang Wetan 02, Semarang. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and written tests (pretest–posttest), and analyzed using N-Gain testing and qualitative descriptive analysis. The results show that the use of flipbook-based PjBL effectively improved students’ creative attitudes—specifically in fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration of ideas—with most students performing in the good to excellent categories. The average writing skill score increased from 64.56 to 95.06, with an N-Gain of 0.86 (high category). The study concludes that flipbook-assisted PjBL significantly enhances students’ creativity and writing proficiency. The findings highlight the potential of flipbooks as innovative instructional media that promote learner autonomy and active student engagement in the learning process.

Abstract

Although listening skills and critical thinking dispositions are foundational to the development of twenty-first-century literacy in primary education, studies that specifically integrate Problem-Based Learning (PBL) with interactive digital media to simultaneously enhance both competencies in lower-grade students remain limited. This study aims to examine the implementation of the PBL model supported by the Information Detective Flipbook (Flipbook Detektif Informasi) and to evaluate its effectiveness in improving critical attitudes and listening skills in Grade III elementary school students. The study employs a mixed-methods approach with an embedded concurrent design, involving 20 Grade III students at SDN Wonoplembon 02 Semarang selected through saturated sampling. Data were collected using structured observation sheets, semi-structured interview guides, field notes, documentation, and pretest–posttest instruments, and analyzed through thematic analysis and the N-Gain statistical test. The results show that the implementation of PBL was effective, with almost all students displaying high curiosity and the ability to evaluate information logically. The average listening score increased from 65.4 to 85.2, with an N-Gain of 0.57 (medium category), and the percentage of mastery rose from 40% to 100%. These findings strengthen the development of constructivist learning theory by demonstrating that PBL can integrate the development of multiple skills in lower-grade students. The study underscores the importance of combining structured instructional models, authentic content in the form of public announcements, and interactive flipbook media to foster active learning and critical inquiry, and it offers practical implications for teachers, curriculum developers, and researchers seeking to integrate digital media with problem-based approaches, including long-term exploration and the examination of moderating factors such as learning styles and student motivation.

Abstract

Although the Talking Stick instructional model has been widely studied, research that specifically integrates the Lingkubaca Student Worksheet (Lembar Kerja Murid [LKM] “Lingkubaca”) with concrete media based on contextual images to enhance beginning reading skills and communication attitudes in Grade I students remains very limited. This study aims to describe the implementation of Talking Stick supported by the Lingkubaca Student Worksheet and to test its effectiveness in improving students’ ability to read simple words and sentences as well as their communication attitudes. The study employs a mixed-methods approach with a one-group pretest–posttest design, involving 10 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and worksheet-based tests, and analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative methods. The findings show a significant improvement in beginning reading skills, with the average score increasing from 58.50 to 81.70, accompanied by positive developments in communication attitudes. These results reinforce cognitive development theory that emphasizes the importance of concrete media and social interaction in learning among students at the concrete operational stage and extend understanding of the effectiveness of game-based learning in early literacy development. The study concludes that the collaboration of reading activities, educational games, and oral communication is a key strategy for building basic literacy in early-grade students and provides theoretical implications for early literacy studies as well as practical guidance for teachers seeking to optimize the use of concrete media and thematic worksheets in enhancing the literacy of Phase A (fase A) students.

Abstract

Although listening skills and critical attitudes have received attention in several studies, research that specifically addresses the integration of e-comic media, the reading a lot strategy, and the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in Indonesian language instruction at the primary school level remains limited. This study aims (1) to describe the implementation of PBL-based e-comics supported by the reading a lot strategy as an effort to enhance the critical attitudes and aural text listening skills of fifth-grade students, and (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of these e-comics in improving both aspects. This study employed a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design, involving 14 fifth-grade students selected through total sampling. Data were collected using an Aural Comprehension Test (Tes Komprehensi Aural, TKA) in the form of multiple-choice and completion items, critical attitude observation sheets assessed by two observers, interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative thematic analysis. The results indicate that the implementation of the PBL model supported by e-comics is effective in improving listening skills, as evidenced by an increase in classical mastery from 35.71% in the pretest to 92.86% in the posttest. Students’ critical attitudes also developed positively, as reflected in their ability to pose critical questions, express opinions logically, and relate the moral values of the stories to everyday life, with the majority of students falling into the good and very good categories. This study concludes that PBL-based e-comics supported by the reading a lot strategy play an important role in strengthening critical attitudes and aural text listening skills, and implies that teachers and schools can adopt them as an alternative model and medium for Indonesian language learning in primary schools to enhance student engagement and comprehension.
