Abstract

This study originates from the problem of limited authentic assessment instruments that specifically measure elementary students’ critical thinking skills, particularly in speech text learning. It aims to develop, implement, and validate a matching card evaluation tool based on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) to assess fifth-grade students’ critical thinking abilities. A mixed-methods approach with a concurrent embedded design was employed, involving 28 students. Quantitative data were obtained from matching card results, while qualitative data were collected through classroom observations, questionnaires, and interviews. The findings show that the integration of PBL and CIRC increases students’ engagement in analyzing text structure, identifying main ideas, and evaluating the interrelationships among text elements. The matching card instrument proved effective in measuring critical thinking indicators, as evidenced by an average score of 78.2 and a classical mastery level of 82.1%. Qualitatively, 85.7% of students stated that the instrument helped improve their understanding, accuracy, and confidence during assessment. These results lead to the conclusion that matching cards provide valid evidence of students’ analytical, interpretive, and relational thinking processes, and contribute to strengthening literacy-based pedagogy through authentic assessment aligned with higher-order thinking skills. The implications of this study include opportunities for broader implementation, the need for long-term evaluation of critical thinking development, and the potential integration of the instrument into digital platforms, alongside recommendations to refine the level of card complexity and test the instrument in more diverse student populations.

Abstract

Although listening skills and critical attitudes have received attention in several studies, research that specifically examines the integration of LKPD Mission Card, the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model, and deep-learning-oriented listening activities in Bahasa Indonesia instruction at the elementary level remains limited. This study aims to describe the implementation of PBL-based LKPD Mission Card as an effort to improve fifth-grade students’ critical attitudes and aural text listening skills, as well as to evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing both aspects. A mixed-methods approach with an Explanatory Sequential design was employed, involving 14 fifth-grade students selected through total sampling. Data were collected using an Aural Comprehension Test (Tes Komprehensi Aural, TKA) in the form of multiple-choice and completion items, observation sheets of critical attitudes assessed by two observers, interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative thematic analysis. The results show that the application of the PBL model supported by LKPD Mission Card is effective in improving listening skills, as indicated by an increase in classical mastery from 35.71% in the pretest to 92.86% in the posttest and a rise in the class mean score from 60.00 to 82.00. Students’ critical attitudes also developed positively, reflected in their ability to pose critical questions, express opinions logically, and relate the moral values of stories to everyday life, with the proportion of students in the high critical-attitude category increasing from 21.4% to 78.6%. The study concludes that PBL-based LKPD Mission Card plays an important role in strengthening critical attitudes and aural text listening skills, and implies that teachers and schools can adopt it as an alternative model and medium for Bahasa Indonesia instruction that supports deep learning in elementary schools.

Abstract

Listening and oral communication are fundamental competencies for elementary school students; however, in classroom practice many pupils still struggle to understand texts in depth, partly due to the limited variety of instructional strategies that can accommodate differences in students’ abilities. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of implementing remedial and enrichment instruments using the narrative text “Ketulusan” as an effort to improve listening and oral communication skills among sixth-grade students at SD Wonoplembon 02. The research employed a mixed-methods approach with an Explanatory Sequential design, beginning with in-depth qualitative exploration followed by quantitative data collection. The findings show a significant improvement in listening skills, with an average enrichment score of 88.14, as well as an increase in oral communication skills, with an average score of 85.76. These results indicate that the use of narrative texts and a differentiated learning approach through a remedial–enrichment scheme effectively helps students understand story content and retell information in a coherent and clear manner. Accordingly, the instrument is proven effective in enhancing the two language competence aspects that constitute the focus of this study and reinforces the importance of implementing instructional strategies that are adaptive to students’ diverse abilities in Bahasa Indonesia learning at the elementary school level.

Abstract

Although critical reasoning skills in distinguishing facts from opinions have been widely investigated, studies that specifically examine the integration of concrete media with the systematic steps of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) to strengthen elementary students’ analytical abilities remain limited. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the PBL-based Permen Fakta dan Opini medium in improving sixth-grade students’ critical reasoning skills. A mixed-methods approach with a Sequential Explanatory design was employed, beginning with a quantitative one-group pretest–posttest experiment involving 31 students selected through total sampling, followed by observations and interviews. Data were collected through a critical reasoning test, observation sheets, and interview protocols, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, N-Gain calculations, and thematic analysis. The results show a significant increase in critical reasoning ability, as indicated by a rise in the mean score from 56.45 to 84.51 and an increase in mastery learning from 45.16% to 87.09%, with an N-Gain value of 0.66 indicating moderate-to-high improvement. Qualitative findings corroborate the quantitative results through evidence of increased participation, clearer argumentation, and greater consistency in classifying factual and opinion statements. This study contributes to the strengthening of constructivist theory by demonstrating that integrating concrete media with PBL can deepen conceptual understanding during analytical processes and underscores the importance of student-centered instructional strategies supported by concrete media to optimize higher-order thinking skills. Follow-up studies are recommended to examine long-term retention and to test the use of similar media in other content areas.

Abstract

Fluctuations in learning outcomes resulting from low interest in conventional Bahasa Indonesia instruction at the primary level remain a problem that has not been specifically examined in depth, even though student engagement and consistency of achievement have been widely discussed in previous studies. This study aimed to increase learning interest and stabilize students’ learning outcomes through the implementation of a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model supported by the Lembar Kerja Murid (LKM) “Lembar Ceria” worksheet. A Classroom Action Research approach with a collaborative design was applied to 28 second-grade students at SDIT Insan Mulia. Data were collected through classroom observations, document analysis of students’ work, and written tests, and were analyzed using comparative descriptive techniques. The results show that the use of the Lembar Ceria worksheet within a PBL framework successfully increased learning interest, as reflected in students’ task commitment reaching 100%, and stabilized as well as improved learning outcomes, indicated by an increase in the class mean score from 64.80 (pre-cycle) to 84.71 (Cycle I), with a classical mastery level of 86.53%. These findings contribute to strengthening the theoretical framework of media-assisted active learning and broaden understanding of effective teaching strategies at the elementary level. The study concludes that visually engaging worksheets combined with PBL syntax play a crucial role in creating an enjoyable and meaningful learning atmosphere, and recommends that educators adopt visually stimulating worksheets to enhance student engagement. The implications include a theoretical contribution to the literature on PBL and practical recommendations for elementary school teachers, while also opening avenues for further research on the use of similar media in other subjects to promote more holistic stability in learning outcomes.

Abstract

Although meaningful reading skills have received considerable attention in research on early literacy development, studies that specifically integrate the principles of Deep Learning with Cooperative Learning to enhance meaningful reading among lower-grade students remain limited. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an instructional innovation in Bahasa Indonesia that integrates Deep Learning and Cooperative Learning to improve meaningful reading skills among first-grade students. A mixed-methods approach was employed using a modified Research and Development (R&D) design, involving 18 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through classroom observations, field notes, teacher interviews, and pretest–posttest assessments of reading skills, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The findings indicate a significant improvement in students’ meaningful reading ability, reflected in enhanced comprehension of text content, active participation, collaborative attitudes, and reflective engagement during learning activities, although a small number of students still required additional support in recognizing simple words, indicating differing levels of learning readiness. Theoretically, the study reinforces the relevance of Deep Learning principles—mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning—in the development of early literacy, while practically it produces a teaching module that teachers can use to strengthen Bahasa Indonesia instruction in the early grades. It is concluded that the integration of Deep Learning and Cooperative Learning plays an important role in fostering meaningful reading skills and collaborative character from the primary school level, and further research is recommended to test this instructional model in other subjects and grade levels to broaden the generalizability of the findings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the language and spelling feasibility of Chapter V in the 2021 Indonesian language textbook for second-grade elementary school students, themed “Making Friends in Diversity.” Using a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis and linguistic error analysis, the study evaluates the textbook's content alignment with learning objectives, character education, and linguistic accuracy. Data were collected through document review, observation sheets, student journals, and guided discussion outcomes. The findings indicate that the chapter content appropriately integrates character values such as empathy, tolerance, and self-confidence through contextual fables and active learning activities. However, several issues were identified in linguistic structure, including the use of non-standard words like “minder,” incomplete or ambiguous sentence constructions, and punctuation errors in direct speech. Visually, the book employs child-friendly design and illustrations, although some graphics lack relevance to the narrative. The transition between narrative and exercises is often abrupt, reducing instructional coherence. Despite meeting most feasibility indicators, improvements are needed in language structure and narrative cohesion to enhance the effectiveness of the book as a learning medium. The study recommends revising ambiguous sentences, ensuring accurate spelling and punctuation, and aligning illustrations with textual content. Strengthening both linguistic and visual elements can significantly contribute to fostering proper language habits and instilling positive character traits in early-grade learners.

Abstract

The limited variety of learning media in Grade IV Indonesian language lessons, particularly in local content on narrative texts, has led to low student interest and poor reading comprehension. To address this issue, this study developed and evaluated a Pop-Up Book learning medium enhanced with Augmented Reality (AR). This research involved Grade IV teachers, students, and expert reviewers. Data were collected through observations, interviews, tests, and questionnaires. The primary instruments were questionnaire sheets, while data were analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative descriptive techniques. Effectiveness was measured through pretest–posttest comparisons and N-gain analysis on small- and large-scale trials. Feasibility assessments yielded high scores: material experts (96.66%), media experts (98.75%), teacher responses (97.5%), and student responses (97.08%). Pretest–posttest results showed improved knowledge competence, with N-gain scores of 0.79 (small scale) and 0.66 (large scale), indicating the media was “quite effective” in enhancing reading comprehension. The integration of Pop-Up Books with AR technology provided interactive, visually engaging content that stimulated student interest and facilitated comprehension. The consistently high ratings from experts, teachers, and students confirm its quality and relevance to classroom needs. The AR-assisted Pop-Up Book is highly feasible, effective, and suitable for improving narrative text reading comprehension in Grade IV Indonesian language lessons. Its implementation can serve as an innovative approach to enhance learning engagement and outcomes.
