Abstract

Infections caused by pathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa present significant challenges in clinical practice, particularly due to rising resistance to conventional antibiotics. The development of environmentally friendly, nanotechnology-based antibacterial agents is considered a promising alternative. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of a nanocomposite comprising silver nitrate (AgNO₃), Cymbopogon citratus leaf extract, and chitosan against P. aeruginosa. The nanocomposite was synthesized using a green synthesis method, with plant extract serving as a natural reducing agent and chitosan as a nanoparticle stabilizer. Antibacterial activity was assessed via disk diffusion against five concentrations (6.25, 12.5, 15, 25, and 50 mg/mL), and compared to positive (chlorhexidine) and negative (acetic acid) controls. The results showed that the 6.25 mg/mL concentration produced the largest inhibition zone (average 11 mm), although it did not surpass the effectiveness of chlorhexidine. The inhibition zones remained stable for up to 72 hours, indicating sustained antibacterial activity. A decline in efficacy at 50 mg/mL was observed, likely due to nanoparticle aggregation and biological saturation. These findings support the potential of AgNO₃–C. citratus–chitosan nanocomposite as a natural-based alternative antibacterial agent. Further studies are recommended to characterize its physicochemical properties, elucidate its mechanism of action, and evaluate its toxicity and applicability in pharmaceutical and biomedical contexts.

Abstract

Labor pain is one of the factors that can hinder the progress of the labor process. The mother's inability to manage pain during labor has the potential to cause uterine contractions to become uncoordinated, which has an impact on prolonging the duration of the first stage and increasing the risk of disruption to the fetal condition. Various nonpharmacological methods have been applied to accelerate labor and reduce pain intensity, including the use of gym ball and rebozo (pelvic rocking) techniques. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using gym ball and rebozo techniques on pain intensity and duration of active phase I in laboring women at the Ota Independent Midwife Practice Site (TPMB), South Lampung, in 2025. The research used a case study approach to two participants who were in the active phase of labor. Primary data were obtained through direct observation of the interventions provided, namely the use of gym ball and rebozo techniques. The results showed that laboring women who received the gym ball intervention experienced a decrease in pain intensity from the moderate category to mild, with a duration of labor of 5 hours. Meanwhile, mothers who received the rebozo technique showed no change in pain intensity, with a duration of labor of 6 hours. It can be concluded that the use of gym ball is more effective in reducing pain intensity and shortening labor time in active phase I compared to the rebozo technique. Therefore, the use of gym ball can be recommended as an alternative nonpharmacological method to support a more comfortable and efficient labor process.

Abstract

The lemongrass plant (Cymbopogon citratus) in Indonesia has great potential as a natural ingredient for medicines because it contains various compounds such as neral, citral, geranial acetate, flavonoids, and tannins. Previous research has demonstrated various pharmacological activities of kitchen lemongrass leaves, including antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Encapsulation technology in the form of chitosan-NaTPP nanoparticles is used to maintain the activity of kitchen lemongrass leaf compounds. This research aims to determine the physical characteristics of the encapsulation of kitchen lemongrass leaf extract with several comparisons of chitosan and NaTPP by testing PSA (particle size analysis test), FTIR (functional group analysis test), viscosity, and stability, including pH and turbidity tests. Encapsulation with a 1:1 ratio of chitosan and NaTPP has a particle size of 524 nm and a PdI value of 0.481, classified as monodisperse (PdI <0.7). The pH value ranges from 6.46 to 7.30, and the viscosity value was 2.134–2.169 cP, which is still within mouthwash standards. The turbidity test showed stable encapsulation results. Therefore, encapsulation with a 1:1 ratio of chitosan and NaTPP is the most optimal choice and has potential for developing the therapeutic effect of mouthwash.

Abstract

The lemongrass plant (Cymbopogon citratus) was a potential medicinal plant due to the presence of secondary metabolites such as neral, citral, geranial acetate, flavonoids, and tannins, which possess pharmacological activities including antibacterial, antifungal, and antiinflammatory. However, the antibacterial secondary metabolites contained in lemongrass leaves were unstable, hence required a substance capable of encapsulating or entrapping them using other natural compounds such as chitosan and tripolyphosphate (TPP). The chitosan and TPP ratio significantly affects crosslinking during the encapsulation process. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes are among the bacteria potentially causing infections in the oral cavity. The aim of this research was to determine the inhibitory effect of encapsulated lemongrass leaf extract with chitosan and TPP ratios of 1:1, 1:0.9, 1:0.8, and 1:0.7 against S.aureus and S.pyogenes. The research results showed inhibition zones formed on S. aureus and S. pyogenes for each encapsulation ratio of 1:1, 1:0.9, 1:0.8, 1:0.7, were 25.09±0.62 mm, 21.01±0.13 mm, 22.78±0.39 mm, 23.96±0.14 mm, and 24.38±0.45 mm, 21.99±0.34 mm, 22.44±0.48 mm, and 20.49±0.24 mm, respectively. Encapsulation of lemongrass leaf extract using chitosan and TPP ratios was effective in inhibiting the growth of S. aureus and S. pyogenes, with the best ratio at 1:1.   Keywords:  Lemongrass leaves, encapsulation, chitosan, antibacterial, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes

Abstract

Abstract

The water supply in dry land depends on the rainfall, which causes agricultural constraints and limited water supply. The pottery irrigation method is considered capable of overcoming water shortages during the dry season. Pottery irrigation uses porous clay, so the water slowly comes out of the pottery and wet the surrounding soil. The research aimed to study the influence of pottery subsurface irrigation with and without mulching on watermelon growth and soil properties of clayey soil Alfisol and sandy soil entisol. The research was conducted on July 2019 in the experimental field Faculty of Agriculture, Karanganyar Regency. The experimental research design used a nested design with a 3-factor treatment that were soil type (T), fertilization method (P), and use of mulch (M). The types of soil were Alfisol (T1) and Entisol (T2). The fertilization methods were fertigation 100% (P1), fertigation 50% (P2), and banding fertilization 100% (P3). Mulch application included control, without mulch (M0) and mulch (M1). The combination of P1M1 treatment on alfisol and entisol soil showed the highest soil moisture with values of 23.1% and 22.5%, respectively. The highest fruit weight of melon in alfisol and entisol soils were indicated by the same treatment (P1M1) with values of 580.33 g and 616.5 g, respectively.

Abstract

The higher national rice demand encourages various efforts to increase rice production. This increase in rice production occurs in line with increasing public awareness of healthy foods, especially organic rice. Rice field management with an organic system is expected to provide a higher yield and quality of rice. This study aims to determine the effect of the long-time application of an organic rice management system on rice yield and quality. Descriptive exploratory research is supported by laboratory analysis of samples of organic rice plants with three periods (10 years, 7 years, and 4 years), semi-organic and conventional. The parameters observed were dry harvested grain, dry milled grain, the weight of 1000 grains, unfilled grain, protein content, amylum, amylopectin, and reducing sugar. The most prolonged organic rice field management with the application of 10 years gives better results with a protein content of 6.14%, amylum 71.71%, and amylopectin 49.35%. While the application of organic farming for 7 years gives the highest rice yield, the difference is not confirmed with the application of organic 10 years, with the weight of dry grain harvest 10.44 Mg ha-1, dry milled grain 8.15 10.44 Mg ha-1, the weight of 1000 grains 24 g, and unfilled grain 3.8%.
