Abstract

Microplastic contamination in water provides an ideal surface for biofilm formation. It facilitates other pollutants, such as heavy metals, to attach to their surface. This interaction leads to biological and environmental problems. We tested this phenomenon by investigating the presence of microplastics in water, biofilms on surfaces, and heavy metal accumulation during September 2024. It further examines the relationship between microplastic and their contamination in fish. Samples were collected from two stations, namely Kondang Buntung Fish Auction Place (TPI) and the Indonesian Navy Post, water from Sendang Biru, using a purposive sampling method. A total of 20 liters of water and 6 Banyar fish (Rastrelliger kanagurta) specimens were analyzed. In contrast, biofilm morphology and heavy metal content were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray. The result found that fibre-shaped microplastics, with fragments and filaments, dominated water samples. Microplastics 1-5 mm in size show that their colors included black, blue, red, and transparent. Five biofilm morphologies on the microplastic surfaces were identified: platelet, thin film, solid film, sporous, and diatoms. Heavy metals (Pb, Hg, Cd, Al, Mg, Fe) were detected with weight percentages ranging from 0.473 to 2.533%. Microplastics are found in the digestive tracts of fish, predominantly microplastic as filaments followed by fragments and fibers. We found that biofilm-coated microplastics accumulate heavy metals, posing a risk of pollutant transfer to aquatic organisms.

Abstract

Abstract

Fermentation has been used by traditional societies as far back as 6000 AD involving microorganisms such as yeast and bacteria that can convert carbohydrates into alcohol and carbon dioxide. This process is essential for the production of bioethanol produced from agricultural residues. Fermentation testing can be done using raw materials such as tubers, sticky rice, sago, water hyacinth and cassava to produce bioethanol as an alternative renewable energy. Methods This research utilizes 8 articles from national and international literature studies in the last 10 years that focus on the fermentation process to produce bioethanol. Research and development of efficient fermentation techniques is urgently needed to increase the yield and sustainability of bioethanol production, thus becoming an environmentally friendly solution in meeting global energy needs. Keywords : Bioethanol, Fermentation, microorganisms

Abstract

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, including in Indonesia. This review explores the potential of various plants as sources of anticancer compounds through secondary metabolite analysis. Plants such as Rosa damascena, Wild Onion (Scorodocarpus borneensis Becc), and Acalypha Indica have been studied for anticancer activity using in vitro methods. The results showed that extracts from Rosa damascena had varying IC50 values against various types of cancer cells, including 16.28 μg/mL in liver cancer cells (HepG-2) and 18.09 μg/mL in breast cancer cells (MCF-7). In addition, Wild Onion showed very strong anticancer activity with an IC50 value of 1.1061 μg/mL in L1210 leukemia cells. Secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins were identified as key components contributing to the anticancer effects. These findings highlight the importance of further research to develop more effective and safe plant-based cancer therapies. Keyword: Anticancer, Cancer, Secondary Metabolites, Plants

Abstract

The psychological well-being of inmates serving as kitchen trustees needs to be considered as an effort to maintain their security, order, motivation, and work quality in their daily tasks. This will affect their self-acceptance, positive relationships with others, autonomy, environmental mastery, life purpose, and self-development, enabling them to maximize their assistance to officers in providing daily meals to inmates, whose numbers are disproportionate to the existing kitchen trustees. This study uses the psychological well-being theory to understand the psychological well-being of inmates working as kitchen trustees. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, utilizing both primary and secondary data sources, which include interviews, observations, and document studies. We conducted data analysis through the processes of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate the need for an evaluation of the motives and reasons inmates become kitchen trustees, the weakening of positive relationships with others, difficulties in performing daily activities, handling challenges and shortages as kitchen trustees, unclear life vision, and the underdevelopment of their potential.
