Abstract

Cocoa is one of the essential commodities that contribute significantly to the Indonesian economy. As the third largest cocoa-producing country in the world, Indonesia is facing competition from Ghana, a global cocoa-producing country which is relatively similar to Indonesia in terms of politics, economy, and the cocoa industry. Ghana has a competitive advantage that makes its cocoa products appear superior to Indonesia in terms of quality, productivity figures, and cocoa export value. Especially, this is seen in terms of cocoa export to the European Union market. This article aims to study the external efforts made by Ghana and Indonesia to increase their cocoa exports to the European Union market, the largest chocolate consumer region in the world. To do this, it used a qualitative research method with descriptive-analytical and comparative analysis employing the theory of competitive advantage and the concept of economic diplomacy. The article found that Indonesia has excellent cocoa potential that can be developed further and can learn from what Ghana has attempted to increase its cocoa exports to the European Union market.

Abstract

Marine Plastic Pollution (MPP) is increasing at an alarming rate. It presses environmental crisis, posing significant threats to both marine ecosystem and biodiversity, as well as human health. While relevant international legal frameworks call for concerted global action, effective national law enforcement remains a crucial element in the fight against plastic waste. This research explores Indonesia’s practice in implementing existing international legal frameworks nationally to tackle MPP. Although Indonesia has made significant progress in establishing national laws that align with international legal frameworks, however, much remain to be done. This especially related to regulatory framework and law enforcement institutions. This paper highlights existing regulatory and institutional frameworks adopted by Indonesia and analyses key enforcement challenges faced by Indonesia in reducing MPP. It is argued that strengthening national enforcement mechanisms, fostering intergovernmental collaboration, and enhancing public-private partnerships are essential to curbing marine plastic pollution. Ultimately, the paper calls for a more robust, integrated approach that aligns national legal frameworks with global efforts to protect marine environments from further degradation.

Abstract

The Metro River flows from upstream to downstream across East Java to support several human activities such as household, toilets, or agriculture. The utilization of water rivers must be balanced with water quality monitoring so that the quality of the water can be monitored. This study aims to analyze the abundance of microplastic in the Metro River. Moreover, the water parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, flow velocity) were also measured. Sampling was carried out at three different stations, namely station 1 representing the agricultural activity area, station 2 representing the household activity area, and station 3 representing industrial activity. This study shows the abundance of microplastics in biofilm matrices and surrounding river water. The types of the microplastics are fibers, fragments, and films. The total abundances of microplastics in river water ranged from 0.8 - 1.61 particle.mL-1, while the biofilm matrices ranged from 7.4 to 9.5 particle.gram-1. The results of water quality parameters at all stations are still relatively good compared to quality standards. To the best of our knowledge, this study was the first study that reports the microplastics in the water of and inside biofilm formed on Metro River.

Abstract

One of the aquatic ecosystems that are very susceptible to contamination is the reservoir ecosystem. Reservoirs have different characteristics from other water bodies because they receive continuous water input from the river that flows through them. The river water contains organic and inorganic materials that can cause pollution caused by various kinds of human activities. The pollutant that is currently getting more attention is microplastics. Hence, various ways are developed to monitor the presence of microplastics in environments. The biotic component that may adsorb and accumulate microplastics is microbes that formed biofilm matrices as a predominant habitat. This study analyzes the presence of microplastics in water and biofilm matrices in Lahor Reservoir. The water parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and flow velocity) were also measured. Samplings were carried out at three stations, namely station A (inlet channel), station B (middle), and station C (outlet channel). This study revealed that water quality parameters were still relatively good according to the environment's quality standards. The average value of microplastic abundance in water at station A was 0.0013 particles.mL-1, station B was 0.00083 particles.mL-1, and station C was 0.00072 particles.mL-1. The average abundance of microplastics in the biofilm at station A, station B, and station C was 7.55 particles.g-1, 7.26 particles.g-1, and 4.59 particles.gram-1, respectively. This study indicates that the abundance of microplastics in the biofilm in the Lahor Reservoir was thousands of times higher than in the water. According to the results of this study, the biofilm can be used as a biological agent in monitoring the presence of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems such as the Lahor Reservoir, East Java, Indonesia. Abstract

Textile industry production activities in one of the Badas areas can have implications for the occurrence of dye liquid waste pollution in the Konto river flow. This implication leads to the public perception that there has been river pollution from textile dyeing liquid waste. In this case, public perceptions need to be analyzed as a form of river environmental monitoring activities. Therefore, public perceptions of pollution were compared with actual water quality data, especially related to dyes in river water, to link public perceptions with environmental resource management efforts. This study aims to analyze public perceptions of textile dye waste pollution and compare the analysis results with the river water quality analysis. Analysis of river water quality (dye content, BOD, COD) was conducted at five sampling points in Badas, Kuwik, Balungjeruk, and Wonorejo villages. Public perception was measured descriptively through interviews with respondents referring to the Slovin method. The analysis of public perceptions shows that the Public considers that there has been pollution of river water, mainly due to textile industry waste, along the Konto River. The results of the water quality analysis showed that dye concentrations were found at four sampling points except for Wonorejo Village. This result shows that the correlation between public perception and data on dye contamination only occurs in Badas, Kuwik, and Balungjeruk villages. In addition, the BOD/COD ratio indicates that pollution has occurred at all observation points in this study. Keywords:  Aquatic Ecosystem, Dyes, Pollution, Public Perception, Waste.

Abstract

Biofilm is the dominant habitat for aquatic microbes that can grow in various aquatic conditions, including environments with extreme conditions. One of the extreme conditions found in aquatic ecosystems is a hypersaline environment. As part of aquatic biological resources, microbes can also live in this environment. However, although it is the predominant habitat of microbes, biofilms in hypersaline environments have yet to be widely explored. Understanding biofilms in hypersaline environments, especially salt ponds, will increase knowledge about microbial biofilms. The knowledge can open opportunities for using microbes as aquatic resources, such as aquaculture or environmental biotechnology. This study analyzed microbial abundance in biofilms and water in hypersaline environments. The water is from salt ponds on the South Coast of Malang Regency, Indonesia, with different salinity levels (2%, 25%, and 40%). Microbial abundance was analyzed using the culture method using several culture media (Modified Nutrient Agar, Modified Total Plate Agar, Mannitol Salt Agar, and Casein Medium Agar). The substrate for biofilm growth is HDPE, often used as a bottom coating for salt ponds and shrimp ponds. Moreover, this study also analyzed water quality parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, total dissolved solids, temperature) during the biofilms' forming process. The results of this study indicate that the abundance of good microbes that grow in the biofilm or the water around the biofilm is strongly influenced by the type of media used for culturing. The main composition of the most influential media is peptone. The density of microbes in the biofilm is hundreds to thousands of times higher than that in the surrounding water. The results of this study also show that the presence of microbes in both water and biofilm affects the water quality properties in hypersaline environments. Keywords: aquatic ecosystem, biofilm, hypersaline, microbial ecology.
