Abstract

Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has been one of the main drivers of economic development in many developing countries. One of the success stories of these SEZs is China. The giant country began its SEZs at the beginning of the 1980s and in several years, these SEZs have branched out elsewhere in the country. The ability of these SEZs to attract investors and spur economic growth in neighboring regions leading eventually to overall China’s economic success cannot be separated from the strong commitment of the Chinese government to developing these zones. However, commitment turns out not to be the only factor for the success of SEZ program. The ability to devise strategic plan considering all factors including the socio-cultural and geostrategic variables is also the key to the success. What China has done to develop its SEZs can be an invaluable lesson for Indonesia who aspires to develop its own SEZs in order to spur regional growth.

Abstract

Celery is a plant that produces secondary metabolites, known as flavonoids, with distinctive taste and smell. Flavonoids are synthesized in leaves and mainly accumulate in vacuoles of cells. Water deficit is one of the abiotic stress factors that affect the increase of several amino acids as cofactors that form secondary metabolites. Moreover, nitrogen nutrients have an essential role in the formation of amino acids and chlorophyll. The research results show that the total fresh weight increased at around 450 g by applying 200 kg N ha-1 under 100% field capacity (FC). Consequently, there was an increase in fresh weight, followed by the biomass of celery, which was 1/15 of fresh weight. Meanwhile, the accumulated flavonoid concentration was higher at 50% field capacity and 100 kg N ha-1. Surprisingly, the content of proline and flavonoids in leaves of the same age had higher concentrations at 100 kg N ha-1 and 50% FC compared to the concentration of proline and flavonoids at 200 kg N ha-1 in the form of urea fertilizer, namely 0.25 µmol g-1 and 67.84 ppm, respectively. At 50% FC and 100 kg N ha-1, it is slightly higher on proline and flavonoids than the application of 100% FC and 200 kg N ha-1. The highest accumulation of phosphorus in leaves is interestingly at around 0.51 ppm at 50% FC, compared to the application of 100% FC at 100 and 200 kg N ha-1 half bellows at around 0.3.

Abstract

This paper mainly tries to explore the new Model of Indonesian Economic Diplomacy to Non-Traditional Market by Setiawan & Sulastri (2020) with a study case of increasing vegetable oil export to Brazil. Brazil is one of the main targets of Indonesia’s export-development policy to non-traditional markets. The main concern of this paper is how economic diplomacy plays a role in reacting to the declining trend of vegetable oil exports as Indonesia’s leading export product to Brazil during 2016-2020. This paper is a descriptive qualitative research using simple trade calculations to justify Indonesian exports orientation. This paper found there are at least 6 driving factors for the implementation of economic diplomacy, 3 prominent actors for conducting economic diplomacy and 8 processes of economic diplomacy. Indonesia has successfully increased the export trend of vegetable oil to Brazil in the period of 2017-2021, however specific economic diplomacy efforts to encourage vegetable oil exports were identified as minimum.

Abstract

The study analyses the potential impacts of the US-China trade war on the foreign trade of emerging economies, i.e., Indonesia, Brazil, and South Africa, and their foreign economic policies to obtain alternative markets outside the US and China. These countries were chosen because they have similar industrial characteristics and robust commercial relationships with the US and China. This study uses desk review approach and secondary data analysis from the International Trade Center (ITC) Database, the WTO Tariff Database, and the Peterson Institute of International Economics (PIIE). The impacts were portrayed in several views: triangular trade structure, global value chain, China+1, and Global South relationship. In the context of a triangular trade structure with China as the mediator, Indonesia’s and Brazil's trade was relatively secure since they exported considerable natural resources to China. At the same time, they could maintain positive trade performance with the US and China owing to the global value chain. South Africa has extensive imports of intermediate goods from the US and China, mainly for the automotive sector and further processed for the African market. However, since the significant position of the US as a trading partner, Indonesia, Brazil, and South Africa were potentially exposed to protectionism behavior. Indonesia benefits significantly from the US General System Preferences (GSP) trade facilities for developing countries. The consistent trade surplus has raised critical concerns from the US government regarding Indonesian exports. Therefore, the escalation has also enhanced cooperation in the Global South, including the Brazil-led Mercosur free trade negotiation with Singapore and Indonesia's preferential trade agreement with Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Abstract

Seawater is one of the potential resources in Indonesia. One of the commodities that can be produced from seawater is salt. Salt production in Indonesia is done mainly by evaporating seawater. However, weather problems are one of the obstacles to salt production. Alternative innovation to overcome weather problems in salt production is the Greenhouse Salt Tunnel (GST). The application of this innovation allows salt production to be carried out throughout the year. Most salt businesses in East Java are located on the north coast of East Java, while there is no salt production on the South Coast of East Java. One of the locations in East Java that can be used for salt production is the South Coast of Malang Regency. However, studies analyzing the need for innovation to create salt production in the South Coast of Malang Regency have never been reported. This study aimed to analyze the application of GST innovation to create salt production in the South Coast of Malang Regency. The methodologies were analyzing the suitability index of salt production sites, soil elevation analysis, wind direction and speed, and construction requirements for GST. The results show that Gajahrejo Village is very suitable for salt production. The salt production can be conducted using 12 GST constructions on a 2000 m2 area. According to the results of this study, salt production in the south coast area of Malang Regency can be created using the application of GST innovation.  Keywords: aquatic resources, greenhouse salt tunnel, solar salts; south coast of Java, technology innovation

Abstract

Waste management by society not only reflects individual responsibility but also plays a crucial role in environmental sustainability and community welfare. This research aimed to understand society’s perception and behavior regarding domestic waste and its surrounding waters. Understanding societal behavior is the key to sustainable environmental management. Direct inquiry was conducted to the sample population of 25 respondents who represented various age, education, and cultural groups in the densely populated residential area surrounding the Brantas River in Dinoyo Ward. Field observations were done to take water quality parameters and monitor the residents’ behavior regarding waste management. The results indicated that 76% of respondents know the impact of river pollution, although most did not contribute actively to reducing their domestic waste volume. About 44% of respondents never saw anyone littering the river, which may be due to the regular waste pick-up system. This was supported by water quality parameters that did not demonstrate any sign of pollution, although high turbidity was indicated. Comprehension of the results of this study is hoped to inspire the ideas of solid intervention plans to increase awareness and decrease the negative impact of domestic waste on the Brantas River in Dinoyo Ward. Keywords: society perception and behavior, domestic waste management, aquatic environment, Brantas River
