Abstract

Water pollution affects life sustainability; hence, several efforts have been exerted to overcome this problem. For ex-ample, nanofiber membrane technology is introduced to retain solutes while allowing only water molecules to pass through the system. Therefore, this study aimed to maximize the technology for water filtration using the electrospin-ning method by combining Styrofoam waste-based polymer with activated carbon from coconut shell waste (ACCS). The nanofiber diameter produced ranged from 590 nm to 610 nm with porous characteristics and without beads. The carbon content varied from 68.04% to 69.84%, according to the energy dispersive X-ray measurement, demonstrating the composite’s effectiveness. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results also indicated carbonization and activation, along with water removal, associated with O-H stretching vibrations of alcohol and phenol, as well as N-H stretching vibrations of amino bonds. Moreover, the mechanical properties were measured using a single-fiber tensile test on X-ray diffractometry (XRD) analysis, and Young’s modulus was successfully maintained at 3,209.15 ± 632.877 and 1,839.12 ± 212.637 kPa due to the material amorphous nature. The contact angles were 126.5° and 131°, demon-strating ultra-hydrophobic properties. The addition of ACCS has led to a superior porosity structure for waste filtration. The clean water permeability test also showed that the membrane can withstand a 1–4 bar pressure for 15–60 seconds, demonstrating its strength in resisting water resistance. The trend shows the capacity of the material to potentially func-tion as a superior candidate for water filtration.

Abstract

Bullying is a complex phenomenon that requires a holistic approach to addressing it. Preventive efforts are a critical first step. Anti-bullying education in schools, teacher and staff training, and awareness campaigns involving students can encourage cultural and behavioral change. Activities that promote empathy and collaboration also play a role in building an environment that supports positive interpersonal relationships. An intervention approach is needed to address bullying cases that have already occurred. Safe and confidential reporting mechanisms give victims or witnesses the courage to speak up. In addition, counseling for victims and perpetrators helps deal with the emotional impact while addressing the root of the problem. Parent and community involvement strengthens these efforts, making bullying a shared responsibility. Technology also plays a strategic role in bullying prevention, especially in addressing new challenges such as cyberbullying. Digital applications and platforms for reporting bullying cases facilitate quick and confidential reporting. In addition, monitoring online activity through collaboration with parents and internet service providers is key to protecting students from online threats. However, a number of challenges still hinder the effectiveness of this strategy. Lack of awareness and support makes anti-bullying programs difficult to implement, especially in environments that have a culture that is permissive of such behavior. Limited resources, such as budget, expertise, and facilities, also limit the ability of schools and communities to address bullying comprehensively. Meanwhile, the rise of cyberbullying adds complexity, given its anonymous nature and wide reach in the digital world. To meet this challenge, collaboration between schools, families, communities, and governments is essential. With a comprehensive and sustainable approach, bullying can be prevented and addressed more effectively, creating a safer, healthier, and more inclusive environment for all.

Abstract

EFL learners consider reading English texts as a tiresome and unpleasant task that must be completed since they are not used to being exposed to interesting reading materials (Lee, 2015, p. 66). Digital children’s literature allows EFL learners to experience reading books interactively. This research aims to investigate whether using digital children’s literature prathambooks.org has a significant effect on EFL college students’ reading anxiety. prathambooks.org is a web-based story book that provides an open-access repository through the prathambooks.org feature. This study examined 184 undergraduate students enrolled in Introduction to Literature at Universitas Negeri Padang's English Department during the 2022/2023 academic year. Data were collected via a 26-item reading anxiety questionnaire adapted from Ahmad et al. (2013), administered pre- and post-intervention. The intervention consisted of a 15-day program utilizing 15 digital stories from Prathambooks.org, supplemented with comprehension and vocabulary exercises. This protocol was designed to investigate the effects of digital children's literature on college-level reading anxiety. The finding showed a positive effect on students’ reading anxiety after following reading treatment. The students’ post-response scores decreased significantly by about 4.04%, from 70.51% to 66.47%. This research proves that integrating prathambooks.org with structured exercises as reading material has a significant effect on decreasing EFL college students’ reading anxiety.
