Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between number sense and mathematical problem-solving abilities among mathematics education students. Number sense refers to an individual's ability to understand basic mathematical concepts intuitively, while problem-solving ability involves applying mathematical knowledge to solve complex problems. This research employs a quantitative approach with a correlational design. Data were collected through number sense tests and mathematical problem-solving tests administered to Mathematics Education students at a university. The results indicate a significant positive correlation between number sense and mathematical problem-solving ability. This suggests that students with good number sense tend to be more effective in solving mathematical problems. This research is expected to contribute to the development of mathematics education curricula by emphasizing number sense as a foundation for enhancing students' problem-solving skills.

Abstract

Misconceptions in solving linear programming problems remain a challenge in mathematics education. Conceptual errors made by students can lead to misunderstandings and suboptimal learning outcomes. This study aims to identify students' misconceptions in solving linear programming problems based on the Newman method and analyze them from a gender perspective. The research method used is qualitative descriptive, with research subjects consisting of high school students who have studied linear programming. Data were collected through a diagnostic test based on the Newman method and in-depth interviews. The Newman method was used to analyze students' errors in five stages: reading, comprehension, transformation, process skills, and writing the final answer. The results showed that misconceptions most frequently occurred in the transformation and process skills stages. Male students tended to make errors in process skills, while female students made more mistakes in the comprehension and transformation stages. The conclusion of this study indicates that gender influences students' misconception patterns in solving linear programming problems. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for educators in designing more effective teaching strategies to reduce misconceptions and improve students' understanding of linear programming.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the cooperative learning model, specifically the Teams Games Tournaments (TGT) type assisted by Quizizz, on the mathematical literacy skills of 11th-grade students at MAN 1 Mataram in the academic year 2024/2025. This research is a quasi-experimental study using a posttest-only control group design. The population consisted of three 11th-grade science classes with a total of 118 students, and the sample included two classes: XI IPA 1 as the control group, which received direct instruction, and XI IPA 2 as the experimental group, which received the TGT model assisted by Quizizz. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling. Data were collected through a mathematical literacy skills test administered after the intervention and were analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests. Based on the results, a non-parametric test chi-square test was employed along with the calculation of the effect size. The findings showed a difference in the average scores between the control group (49) and the experimental group (78), indicating the influence of the TGT model assisted by Quizizz on students' mathematical literacy. The effect size value of d = 0.465 falls within the medium category, suggesting a moderate impact. Therefore, the TGT cooperative learning model assisted by Quizizz contributes positively to enhancing students' mathematical literacy, particularly in function-related topics such as trigonometry, logarithms, and algebra. Future studies are recommended to further explore the implementation of this model across different educational levels, subject matter, and broader learning contexts.

Abstract

Fraction sense is a critical aspect of number sense, particularly for prospective mathematics teachers. This study aims to describe students’ fraction sense from two main perspectives: visualization and estimation strategies. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method involving 80 fourth-year mathematics education students. Data were collected through a fraction sense test and semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that students’ overall fraction sense was moderate, with an average score of 37.2. Students demonstrated higher performance in estimation strategies (68%) compared to visual representation tasks (32%). Many students struggled to interpret visual fraction models, especially when presented in unfamiliar forms such as non-standard diagrams or number lines. The results suggest that students' thinking remains procedural and lacks conceptual flexibility. Therefore, it is recommended that visual representation be more explicitly integrated into teaching practices as a tool to support estimation and foster meaningful fraction sense.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students’ problem-solving abilities in answering quadratic equation problems based on Polya’s problem-solving steps, viewed from gender differences. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving 24 tenth-grade students from three high schools: SMAN 7 Mataram, SMAN 1 Labuapi, and SMAN 2 Mataram. The research instrument used was a Student Worksheet (LKPD) consisting of two sections: a guided problem with explicit Polya step prompts and an open-ended problem without guidance. The findings reveal that female students tended to complete the problems systematically and reflectively, with most of them falling into the “Very Good” category. In contrast, male students showed more variability in their responses, often demonstrating strength in operational stages but weakness in the reflection stage. The fourth step of Polya’s strategy—reviewing the result—was the most frequently overlooked by both gender groups. This study emphasizes the importance of explicitly and consistently applying Polya’s strategy in mathematics instruction to help develop logical, structured, and independent thinking patterns.
