Abstract

Metacognitive ability is closely related to problem solving ability. This research is a survey research involving 150 students of class X from four high schools in Ngemplak Boyolali. The purpose of this study is to describe the results of the analysis of metacognitive abilities in solving mathematical problems. Data was collected using a Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that 23% of students had high metacognitive abilities, 20% of students had moderate metacognitive abilities, and 57% of students had low metacognitive abilities. Most students who have high metacognitive abilities are able to use their metacognitive abilities in solving mathematical problems. Almost all students who have low metacognitive abilities do not use their metacognitive abilities in solving mathematical problems. Overall, students are less than optimal in using metacognitive abilities when solving mathematical problems.

Abstract

The Merdeka Mengajar platform is a strategic initiative of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Indonesia, aimed at enhancing teacher competencies through self-directed learning and reflective assessment. Two key features of this platform, Independent Training (Pelatihan Mandiri) and Competency Reflection (Refleksi Kompetensi, Refkom), are designed to support teachers’ professional development in a flexible and needs-based manner. This study examines the influence of Independent Training completion and Refkom scores on elementary students’ performance in the 2023 National Assessment (Asesmen Nasional), covering literacy, numeracy, and character domains. The research population comprises elementary school teachers who participated in online Independent Training programs in 2022. Data were analyzed using linear regression, with school accreditation status included as a control variable. The results indicate that students taught by teachers who completed the Independent Training achieved significantly higher literacy and numeracy scores. Teachers’ Refkom scores also had a positive effect on students’ numeracy outcomes, although the relationship was not significant for character development. These findings suggest that strengthening teacher competencies through Independent Training and Refkom contributes meaningfully to improving the quality of student learning.

Abstract

History is a subject that is often considered boring, especially by students at the high school (SMA) level, including high school in Karanganyar Regency, Central Java. Boredom is generally caused by much historical material, tends to be memorized, and the learning process is monotonous in terms of teachers' models, methods, techniques and questions. History questions are considered less varied because they often feature multiple-choice types and standard descriptions. As a result, students need to be more developed in optimizing their potential thinking power. For this reason, the UNS History Education Study Program initiated training in preparing HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) questions as an essential provision for high school history teachers in Karanganyar. The method used is training, mentoring and assignment. Through this training, it was concluded that: First, history teachers must understand the meaning, purpose and importance of using HOTS-based questions in 21st-century history learning. Second, history teachers must understand various types of history questions such as essays, multiple choice, true-false, completion, short answer, and assignment. Third, history teachers must practice mastering the skills of compiling HOTS-based varied history questions. Fourth, implementing the HOTS-based varied history questions in daily high school history learning so that it becomes a habit.
