Abstract

It cannot be denied that the performance of teachers will greatly influence the success of schools in achieving its goals. This descriptive research is intended to discuss: (1) the principals' view on the performance of public elementary school teachers in Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia; (2) principals' expectations for the teachers' performance in the future; and (3) challenges faced by principals to improve teachers' performance in the future. This descriptive quantitative research was carried out at public elementary schools in Pekanbaru in May 2019 to October 2019. By using a proportional random sampling technique, 66 of 191 elementary school principals spread across 12 districts in Pekanbaru were selected as the sample. The questionnaire addressed to the principal was used as an instrument which was then analyzed through descriptive statistical analysis. In the end, it can be concluded that the best performance of teachers is in implementing the learning process. However, their performance in carrying out additional tasks in schools was rated by principals as the lowest average of all categories. The principals' expectations of the teachers' performance in the future are related to improving teacher competencies as well as improving the ability to utilize technology and equipment available at school. While the challenges faced, however, are related to the lack of willingness of teachers to continue their education and limited funds to participate in various training.

Abstract

This study investigated kinds and reasons of code-switching employed by the EFL learners at one of the Universities in Riau Province, Indonesia, with a qualitative approach. The code-switching data were collected based on natural interactions that occurred naturally through phone calls. The participants of this study were the 7th semester students of the English Department at one of the universities in Riau province. The natural interactions through phone calls were audiotaped, and the audios were transcribed. Furthermore, the transcribed audio got classified and analyzed based on its types and functions. Besides, interviews were also conducted in this study to gather the reasons for the use or functions of code-switching based on the learners’ perspectives. Thenceforth, the classified data was validated by the experts of code-switching to make sure the data was ideally correct. The findings showed that learners used Inter-sentential code switching and Intra-sentential code-switching. Dealing with the second research aims, the reasons for code-switching was used to clarify speech content, to talk about particular topics, to use repetition to clarify something, to show emphatic, to provide emphasis on something and also for lexical needs. However, the EFL learners at one of the Universities in Riau Province, Indonesia, not only used an English-Indonesian switching but also Indonesian-English switching in Englishbased conversation.

Abstract

The development of information and communication technology has influenced the current leadership style. Leadership not only can be implemented face-to-face but can also be done through the use of electronic devices and the internet, which is called e-leadership. This study aims to obtain an empirical picture about the influence of digital literacy and digital workplace on e-leadership of educators and education staff of State Vocational Schools 5 Pekanbaru – Riau, either partially or simultaneously. This research was conducted from January to June 2022, but the data was collected in March 2022. The research instrument was a questionnaire given to 95 educators and education staff selected as the samples. The obtained data then analyzed through descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The results of data analysis show that digital literacy has a significant influence as many as 30% on e-leadership and the digital workplace has a significant influence as many as 47.1% on e-leadership. Simultaneously digital literacy and digital workplace influence as many as 32%. on e-leadership. This implies that  it is necessary to improve the digital literacy and digital workplace skills of educators and education staff of State Vocational Schools 5 Pekanbaru – Riau to improve their e-leadership skills.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the correlation between self-directed learning and reading comprehension of the fifth semester students of the English department of FKIP Universitas Riau. The researchers used a descriptive quantitative method as the data approach. The samples of this research were 74 students from the fifth-semester students of the English department of FKIP Universitas Riau. The research instruments are a questionnaire and a test. The questionnaire is for the data on self-directed learning while the test is for the data on reading comprehension. To analyze the data, the researchers employed SPSS Statistics 25. The data analysis showed that the mean score of the student's self-directed learning is 215.18, classified as moderate level, while the mean score of the student's reading comprehension is 56.35, categorized as moderate level. Moreover, the research finding showed the correlation coefficient of the two variables is 0.694, indicating a positive and moderate correlation. Also, the determinant coefficient is 0.48 which implies self-directed learning has a 48% influence on the students’ reading comprehension, leaving the other 52% to other factors. After finding that there is a moderate relationship between selfdirected learning and reading comprehension, it is suggested that students should apply self-directed learning activities well, for it can result in better reading comprehension. This is mainly  because self-directed learning gives them the freedom to choose their own reading materials and learning objectives.

Abstract

Becoming a successful student is a dream of every student and parents. Learning style is one of things that might influence that success. This research intended to find out if there is a correlation between learning styles and learning achievement of students of FKIP Universitas Riau in learning English. 300 students were involved as the sample of the research. The research was conducted during the even semester academic year 2018-2019 and the research data was collected in June 2019. The instruments of the research were adapted from Vark Questionnaire Version 8.01 and students’ grades in their English class. Percentage and mean used to represent the frequency of data for descriptive analysis and inferential analysis was carried out. Since the data of students’ learning style and learning achievement obtained were not normally distributed, associative Kendall’s Tau-c correlation formula was used to find out the relationship between learning style and learning achievement. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between the students learning style and their learning achievement.

Abstract

Kesulitan belajar merupakan kondisi dimana terjadinya hambatan yang membuat seseorang mengalami kesulitan dalam memahami, memproses, atau mengaplikasikan informasi dan keterampilan yang telah diajarkan. Kesulitan belajar bisa disebabkan oleh faktor kognitif, emosional, sosial atau biologis. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh konseling kelompok dengan Teknik Problem Solving untuk mengatasi Kesulitan Belajar siswa SMA Negeri 15 Pekanbaru. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan jenis eksperimen dengan desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah Pre-Experimental Design dengan model desain One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. Adapun pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kuesioner atau angket tentang kesulitan belajar siswa melalui penyebaran pretest dan posttest yang selanjutnya dianalisis dengan uji Wilcoxon dan uji Rank Spearman dengan bantuan program SPSS Versi 25 Windows. Berdasarkan hasil data yang diperoleh tingkat kesulitan belajar siswa sebelum diberikan layanan konseling kelompok dengan teknik Problem Solving dalam kategori tinggi dan mengalami penurunan tingkat kesulitan belajar setelah diberikan layanan konseling kelompok dengan teknik Problem Solving. Selanjutnya pada penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan tingkat kesulitan belajar siswa sebelum dan sesudah diberikan layanan konseling kelompok dengan teknik Problem Solving dan layanan konseling kelompok dengan teknik Problem Solving berpengaruh dalam mengatasi kesulitan belajar siswa.

Abstract

Teacher performance is the result of work completed by a teacher in carrying out their duties in accord with the responsibilities assigned. This research aims to determine the effect of education, training and work motivation on teacher performance of Babussalam junior high school Pekanbaru. The population in this study were 32 junior high school teachers in Babussalam which were taken by using total sampling technique. The instrument was used a questionnaire distributed. The data analysis technique used by path analysis. The results showed that the variable of teacher performance is excellent category with a score of 97%, the variable of education is doubt category with a score of 53%, the variable of training is excellent category with a score of 53%, the variable of work motivation is excellent with a score of 100%. While based on the results of the path analysis there was a significance between education on the work motivation that was 0.515, and education on the teacher performance that was 0.90, training on the work motivation that was 0.050, and training was a significance on the teacher performance that was 0.496, and then work motivation was significant on the teacher performance that was 0.478, and education was significant on the teacher performance by work motivation that was 0.255, and then training was significant on the teacher performance by work motivation that is 0.478. The suggestions are that every teacher must be able to follow the good education and apply it according to the learning of education that they have taken. And to the principal be more expected for all members of the school high motivation, attention for education and training that supports teacher performance. Thus, with better education and training followed by teachers and stronger work motivation, the higher performance will increase and the learning goals can be achieved optimally.

Abstract

Kurikulum Merdeka hadir sebagai jawaban atas kebutuhan pembelajaran yang lebih bermakna dan berpusat pada siswa, dengan menekankan pendekatan reflektif, kontekstual, dan transformatif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji kontribusi pendekatan deep learning terhadap terciptanya pembelajaran bermakna dalam konteks Kurikulum Merdeka. Studi ini menggunakan metode tinjauan literatur kualitatif dengan mengkaji sepuluh artikel terbitan tahun 2022 ke atas yang dipilih melalui pencarian sistematis di Google Scholar, DOAJ, dan repositori nasional. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa deep learning telah diterapkan secara efektif pada berbagai mata pelajaran dan jenjang pendidikan, meningkatkan pemahaman konseptual, motivasi belajar, dan karakter siswa. Namun, masih ditemukan kendala seperti keterbatasan pemahaman guru, kurangnya sumber daya, dan tantangan dalam asesmen pembelajaran. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa deep learning memiliki potensi besar sebagai strategi pedagogis dalam Kurikulum Merdeka, asalkan disertai dukungan sistemik, pelatihan guru, dan inovasi kurikulum yang berkelanjutan

Abstract

English learning is an important asset for medical faculty students to face various future challenges in the health profession. Of course, the role of lecturers is very important in helping students acquire adequate English language skills. For English lecturers who teach medical students (English for Specific Purposes), lecturers are asked to develop syllabus and teaching materials based on student needs. Lecturers need to effectively meet the professional needs of students in the real world. However, the problem, especially in Pekanbaru city there are still many English lecturers who teach in the health sector who have difficulty designing teaching materials that are appropriate to the student's field of knowledge. The purpose of this study is to analyze the English learning needs of medical students. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach through a survey. The population in this study were students of the medical Faculty, especially private Universities in Pekanbaru city. The research implementation period starts from June 2024. The results of this study are expected to be useful for lecturers who teach medical Faculty students to improve students' English skills that are appropriate for the Health sector then be able to continue research on the development of learning modules.

Abstract

This research aimed to develop an English learning medium using Edpuzzle to understand language expressions in listening and speaking classes. A Research and Development (R&D) design was employed in this study, using the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) as the development model. Data were collected through an online questionnaire consisting of a set of written statements for respondents to answer. Descriptive analysis was utilized as the technique for data analysis, dealing with quantitative data. Four Edpuzzle-based videos, featuring explanations and quizzes, were developed and validated by media and language experts. The validation results revealed that the video 'Invitation' achieved an average score of 4.25 (valid), the video 'Apologizing, Expressing Anger and Resolving Conflict' scored an average of 4.30 (valid), the video 'Giving Compliments and Replying to Compliments' received an average score of 3.81 (quite valid), and the 'Expressing Opinions' video garnered an average score of 3.91 (quite valid). Overall, the average score was 4.10, categorized as valid. Therefore, the Edpuzzle-based video, as a developed English learning medium, was deemed suitable and appropriate for application in listening and speaking classes in Indonesia.
