Abstract

This study aims to develop an e-module based on Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) to enhance junior high school students' creative thinking skills, particularly on flat-sided geometric shapes. The research was motivated by the low level of student creativity in mathematics, often attributed to conventional, teacher-centred learning methods. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach, utilising the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The participants were eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 16 Kota Jambi. The developed e-module was validated for practicality and effectiveness. The effectiveness was assessed through a pretest-posttest design, demonstrating a significant improvement in students’ creative thinking abilities across four key indicators: fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. The average N-gain score of 0.79 indicates a high category of effectiveness. These findings suggest that integrating IBL with digital learning media provides an effective instructional tool for fostering students’ mathematical creativity. Therefore, the IBL-based e-module is recommended as an innovative alternative to support student-centred learning and the development of higher-order thinking skills in mathematics.

Abstract

Learning mathematics is important for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, improving students' creativity and self-confidence is still a major concern, especially in solving complex mathematical problems. This study analyzes the relationship between Creative Performance Self-Efficacy (CPSE) and mathematical problem-solving ability on number pattern material. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with participants of grade VIII students of Jambi City 1 Junior High Schools selected based on high and low CPSE categories. Data was collected through CPSE questionnaires, problem-solving tests, and semi-structured interviews. The study showed that CPSE is not always directly proportional to mathematical problem-solving ability. Students with high CPSE do not always perform better than those with low CPSE. Some students with low CPSE can develop more systematic and practical problem-solving strategies. In contrast, students with high CPSE have difficulty understanding problems and executing the right solutions. Factors such as conceptual understanding, accuracy, and learning experience also influence problem-solving success. The conclusion of this study confirms that a learning approach that only focuses on improving CPSE is not practical enough without strengthening conceptual understanding and problem-solving strategies. Therefore, a scaffolding-based learning approach, problem-based learning (PBL), and differentiated instruction are needed to accommodate the needs of students with different CPSE profiles. In addition, metacognitive strategies such as self-evaluation, error-based learning to identify errors, and reflective discussions to evaluate solutions are also essential to implement.   Keywords: creative performance self-efficacy, mathematical problem-solving, students’ strategies, number patterns.

Abstract

Currently, many students use smartphones to support their learning activities or for hobbies and lifestyles. However, students use their smartphones more for social media and playing games than for studying. The results of a preliminary survey on December 15, 2023 on students of the Catholic Health College of St. Vincentius A Paulo Surabaya obtained data that 80% used smartphones for more than 2 hours a day. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the duration of smartphone use and the intensity of neck pain in students. This study uses a correlation design with a cross-sectional approach with the independent variable being the duration of smartphone use and the dependent variable being the intensity of neck pain. The population used were students of the Catholic Health College of St. Vincentius A Paulo Surabaya who met the inclusion criteria with a total of 126 respondents taken by simple random sampling. The measuring instrument used was a questionnaire. The results of the study obtained 126 respondents, most (75%) used smartphones for more than 3 hours outside of lecture hours, 41% experienced mild pain and statistical tests with Spearman's rank obtained p = 0.049 with r = + 0.176 which means there is a positive relationship with very low strength between the duration of smartphone use and the intensity of neck pain. It is important to provide education by the student affairs department of STIKES Katolik St. Vincentius A Paulo Surabaya about tips for using smartphones wisely and also the need for a variety of joint sports activities to improve fitness.

Abstract

Challenges in mastering chemistry content among pre-service chemistry teachers remain a critical concern in teacher education institutions. This study aims to analyze the most difficult concepts and the underlying conditions contributing to students' failure in mastering specific chemistry courses. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis. The research began by identifying courses with the highest proportion of failing grades (≤ D) based on academic transcripts from 235 students across four cohorts in a chemistry education program. Organic Chemistry I was identified as the course with the highest failure rate, affecting 141 students. From this group, ten students from each cohort with a GPA ≥ 3.0 were randomly selected to complete a questionnaire identifying the most difficult topics in the course. In-depth interviews with students and lecturers were then conducted to explore the conceptual difficulties and their possible causes. Findings consistently revealed that Organic Chemistry I had the highest proportion of D grades (10%) compared to other courses, with more than 60% of students in each cohort receiving low grades. Students reported that the Newman projection was the most challenging topic, citing both the abstract nature of the concept, which requires spatial reasoning and mental rotation of molecular structures, and the lack of effective instructional strategies to support understanding. These results highlight the need for pedagogical innovations targeting spatial visualization skills to enhance conceptual comprehension in organic chemistry education.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem in many parts of the world, including in West Java Province, Indonesia. By guiding targeted medication, an accurate assessment of TB risk factors can enhance overall efforts to control tuberculosis. This study introduces modelling by integrating Negative Binomial Mixed Models (NBMM) and Random Forest (RF) called the Negative binomial mixed model random forest (NBMMRF) model.  This model is used to identify and assess risk factors associated with the incidence of tuberculosis. First, utilized NBMM to add fixed effects and random effects in the model and compensate for overdispersion. Modelling count data with overdispersion is a crucial problem in epidemiological studies, and the NBMM component in this model provides a flexible. Afterward, we include a Random Forest component in the model, which helps us detect relevant predictive features and change model weights accordingly. The resulting Negative Binomial Mixed Model Random Forest (NBMMRF) has a high accuracy value of up to 0.915. In contrast to simpler models, the NBMMRF model can capture complex and nonlinear interactions between predictors and outcomes.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of stunting in Indonesia has generally experienced a decline, although not significantly. The issue of stunting is not solely caused by a single, simple factor; rather, it is influenced by complex factors. This study aims to analyze the factors associating with stunting in urban areas across Indonesia. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional survey approach. The data were from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey. The sample in this study were children aged 6 to 23 months residing in urban areas across Indonesia. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to examine the associate between the independent variables and the dependent variable. Results: This study found that male (PR = 1.37), history of stunting at birth (PR = 1.41), low birth weight (PR = 2.13), history of tuberculosis (TB) (PR = 4.53) and family wealth status (PR = 2.28) were significantly associated with stunting status among children in urban areas. These factors were identified as key determinants, with their respective prevalence ratios indicating a substantial association with the prevalence of stunting in the population under study. Conclusions: In the urban context, there are predictive factors of stunting prevalence that require serious attention, such as having a history of TB illness and poor environmental health conditions
