Abstract

Background: Complementary feeding plays a crucial role in preventing malnutrition during early childhood. However, inappropriate complementary feeding practices that do not align with the World Health Organization (WHO) Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) guidelines remain prevalent in developing countries, contributing to high rates of undernutrition and child mortality worldwide. Objective: This review aimed to map the current scientific evidence on the association between complementary feeding and malnutrition among children aged 6–23 months in developing countries, based on the latest WHO IYCF indicators. Methods: This scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR framework. Literature searches were conducted across Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases for English and Indonesian publications from 2020–2025. Eligible studies included observational research examining the relationship between WHO IYCF indicators and child nutritional outcomes. Study quality was assessed using The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Tools, and data were analyzed descriptively without quantitative synthesis. Results: Of 4,454 screened articles, 10 met the inclusion criteria. The mapped evidence consistently showed that inappropriate complementary feeding practices are associated with stunting, wasting, and underweight among children. However, the strength of associations varied due to contextual differences in socioeconomic conditions, dietary culture, national nutrition programs, and variations in the application and measurement of WHO indicators. Conclusion: Appropriate complementary feeding practices based on WHO IYCF indicators are positively linked to better nutritional outcomes in children aged 6–23 months. Strengthening evidence-based, multisectoral interventions and longitudinal research is essential to address disparities in child nutrition.

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a condition where a child is physically too short for their age, which can cause problems for both their physical and cognitive abilities in the future. Stunting is known to be caused not only by the characteristics of the toddler but also by various factors, even beyond health, making stunting management policies crucial in overcoming stunting. Purpose: To map policies for managing stunting in children aged 24-59 months. Method: A scoping review was conducted using literature searches in the Science Direct and PubMed Central databases using the keywords "stunting AND policy OR treatment OR intervention OR reduction OR governance program OR policy report OR policy research AND children aged 24-59 months," resulting in 7,567 articles. These articles were then screened, resulting in nine articles that truly met the research objectives. Results: Policymakers in various countries have implemented a variety of stunting management policies, ranging from improving toddler diets, exclusive breastfeeding campaigns, improving maternal factors, improving health services, improving access to nutrition, to related agricultural policies, food security, and poverty alleviation. Conclusion: The incidence of stunting in toddlers in various countries is influenced by various factors, not just health, so its management requires support from various sectors. Stunting can be caused by the characteristics of the toddlers themselves, so treatment can include providing complementary feeding or improving the diet of children aged 6-23 months, as well as providing micronutrient powder containing iron. Furthermore, it is necessary to control maternal characteristics, such as the mother's age at marriage, the mother's education, and the mother's BMI during pregnancy.   Keywords: Policy; Stunting Management; Toddlers Aged 24-59 Months. Metode: Penelitian scoping review dengan penelusuran literatur pada database Science Direct dan PubMed Central menggunakan kata kunci “stunting AND policy OR treatment OR intervention OR reduction OR governance program OR policy report OR policy research AND children age 24-59 months” yang menghasilkan 7,567 artikel.

Abstract

Rapid technological advancement and the increasing complexity of real-world problems require students to develop ways of thinking that enable them to analyze, structure, and solve problems systematically. Computational thinking (CT) has therefore emerged as a crucial competence, particularly within STEM education. Despite growing interest in CT integration through project-based learning, limited attention has been given to how CT is incorporated into end-of-schooling summative assessment at the senior high school level. This study examines teachers’ and students’ understanding of computational thinking, their perceptions of CT-based summative assessment through STEM projects, classroom implementation practices, and the challenges faced during implementation. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis at a private Islamic senior high school in Indonesia. The participants included seven teachers from different subject areas and eleven twelfth-grade students who were directly involved in a CT-based summative STEM project. Data were analyzed thematically through an iterative process of data condensation, display, and verification. The findings indicate that both teachers and students generally conceptualize CT as systematic, step-by-step problem-solving. While teachers demonstrate a broader conceptual understanding of CT, its core dimensions, such as decomposition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking, are not yet explicitly operationalized in summative assessment criteria. Students can apply CT to practical project tasks, although their understanding remains basic. Both teachers and students perceive CT-based summative assessment positively, as it emphasizes thinking processes, hands-on learning, collaboration, and real-world problem contexts. However, implementation is constrained by limited assessment literacy, challenges in interdisciplinary alignment, time constraints, unequal student participation, and resource limitations. Overall, the study suggests that CT-based summative assessment through STEM projects has strong potential to support meaningful learning at the senior high school level. Nevertheless, clearer assessment frameworks, targeted teacher professional development, and stronger institutional support are required to bridge the gap between conceptual intentions and assessment practices. Keywords: computational thinking, project-based learning, summative assessment, STEM, 21st-century competencies.

Abstract

Diarrhea remains one of the leading causes of mortality among children under five years of age and ranks as the second most common cause of death among Indonesian children aged 12–59 months. Given its endemic nature and potential to cause outbreaks, identifying modifiable risk factors is essential for effective prevention. This study aimed to analyze factors associated with the occurrence of diarrhea among children aged 12–59 months in Bantul, Indonesia. An observational analytic study with a retrospective case–control design was conducted using purposive sampling. A total of 160 children aged 12–59 months were included, comprising 80 diarrhea cases and 80 controls. Data were collected from mothers using structured questionnaires, while children’s nutritional status was assessed using the Growth Monitoring Card. Data analysis was performed using chi-square tests and multivariable logistic regression. The results demonstrated significant associations between diarrhea incidence and nutritional status (p = 0.041; OR = 2.343), economic status (p = 0.024; OR = 2.200), household water source (p = 0.016; OR = 1.209), hand-washing behavior (p < 0.001; OR = 3.646), and history of exclusive breastfeeding (p < 0.001; OR = 5.479). Multivariate analysis identified a history of exclusive breastfeeding as the strongest factor associated with diarrhea occurrence (p < 0.001; OR = 4.140; 95% CI: 1.938–8.843). In conclusion, diarrhea among children aged 12–59 months is significantly associated with nutritional status, socioeconomic conditions, water sources, hand hygiene practices, and exclusive breastfeeding history, with exclusive breastfeeding showing the greatest protective effect. Strengthening parental education and public health programs that promote exclusive breastfeeding is essential for reducing diarrhea incidence in young children.

Abstract

During the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life, newborns require support to meet their needs for stimulation and play (ASAH), affection and emotional support (ASIH), as well as physical care, nutrition, and hygiene (ASUH). Mothers, as the closest caregivers, are expected to provide daily newborn care. This study aimed to analyze the effect of health education using animated video media on the behavior of primiparous postpartum mothers in caring for their babies, including bathing, umbilical cord care, and breastfeeding. The study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design with a Research and Development (R&D) approach. The population consisted of 15 primiparous postpartum mothers in June–July 2024, selected through total sampling. Instruments included a demographic questionnaire and a self-assessment checklist on newborn care practices. The intervention was delivered through animated video media accompanied by a brief demonstration by the researcher to clarify parts that mothers did not fully understand. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, which showed a significant difference (p = 0.001). The results demonstrate that animated video education supplemented with a brief demonstration effectively improved maternal newborn care behavior. In conclusion, health education combining animated video and brief demonstration significantly enhances the ability of primiparous postpartum mothers to perform daily newborn care.
