Abstract

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of promotive health interventions through environmental sanitation and water quality education for diarrhea prevention among children in the Medan Sunggal Community Health Center area on the knowledge and practices of PHBS among families with toddlers, as well as its relationship with the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers in the working area of the Medan Sunggal Health Center. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach involving 50 families with toddlers selected purposively. Interventions in the form of environmental sanitation and water quality education were provided through structured counseling. Data analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the chi-square test. The results showed a significant increase in maternal knowledge of PHBS after the intervention (p < 0.001), while the increase in maternal PHBS practices was not statistically significant (p = 0.073), although descriptively it improved. The chi-square test analysis indicated no significant relationship between maternal knowledge and the incidence of diarrhea (p = 0.529) or between maternal PHBS practices and diarrhea incidence (p = 0.636). These findings suggest that educational interventions effectively improve cognitive aspects but are insufficient to reduce diarrhea incidence without improvements in physical environmental factors. Environmental sanitation and water quality education increase mothers’ knowledge of Clean and Healthy Living Behaviors; however, they alone are inadequate to reduce diarrhea incidence in toddlers, as factors such as access to clean water, proper sanitation facilities, and environmental hygiene also play a critical role.

Abstract

Scabies is a contagious skin disease that remains a public health problem, particularly among children living in communal settings with high population density, such as Juvenile Correctional Institutions (Lembaga Pembinaan Khusus Anak/LPKA). Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (Perilaku Hidup Bersih dan Sehat/PHBS) plays an important role in preventing the transmission of scabies through changes in individual behavior. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of a community health promotive intervention through PHBS education in preventing scabies among children at LPKA Class I Medan. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test group design. The research sample consisted of all 125 children residing at LPKA Class I Medan, selected using total sampling technique. The intervention comprised PHBS education delivered using PowerPoint presentation media. Data were collected before and after the intervention using a structured questionnaire assessing knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to PHBS for scabies prevention. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate analyses, with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test applied due to non-normal data distribution. The results showed a significant increase in respondents’ knowledge and attitudes following the PHBS educational intervention (p < 0.001), as well as a significant improvement in scabies prevention practices (p = 0.010). The greatest improvement was observed in the knowledge aspect, while changes in practice were relatively lower, possibly influenced by limitations in facilities and environmental conditions within the LPKA.

Abstract

Background: Burns are tissue injuries caused by various thermal, chemical, or electrical agents, resulting in serious skin damage that requires comprehensive management. Traditional burn care often utilizes herbal plants due to their bioactive compounds, which have the potential to accelerate the healing process and reduce complications. Objective: This study aims to systematically examine the effectiveness of various medicinal plant extracts in accelerating the healing of Grade I and II burns, based on evidence from relevant experimental studies. Method: The research methodology follows the PRISMA guidelines, employing a literature review to identify experimental studies evaluating the efficacy of medicinal plant extracts in burn management published between 2019 and 2025 in both Indonesian and English. The search process utilized electronic databases such as Google Scholar and ResearchGate, using a combination of keywords including "Luka Bakar" OR "Burn Healing" OR "Wound of Burn," "herbal," "tanaman herbal," "rats," and "Wistar." From the 10,800 articles identified, after removing duplicates and initial screening based on titles and abstracts, 10,718 articles underwent further screening based on full-text availability, publication year (2019-2025), language, and relevance. Ultimately, 14 studies were selected for review. Results: Data from various studies indicate that the application of full-concentration (100%) aloe vera gel provides optimal burn healing results, with a success rate reaching 95.99% within a 12-day period. Conclusion: The use of medicinal plants demonstrates promising therapeutic prospects for the treatment of mild to moderate burns (Grade I and II), owing to their ability to shorten healing duration and reduce associated morbidity.

Abstract

Adolescents are a vulnerable population due to limited knowledge of reproductive health, which increases the risk of unsafe sexual behavior, HIV/AIDS infection, and drug abuse. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Triad Adolescent Reproductive Health (TRIAD KRR) educational intervention in improving adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes toward reproductive health. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Kotarih, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra. The sample consisted of 63 tenth-grade students selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using validated questionnaires measuring knowledge and attitudes before and after the intervention. The intervention was delivered through interactive educational sessions covering sexuality, HIV/AIDS prevention, and drug abuse. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and effect size calculation. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge scores from 28.63 to 29.29 and attitude scores from 58.49 to 59.16 after the intervention (p < 0.05), with a large effect size, indicating the effectiveness of the TRIAD KRR education. This study concludes that TRIAD KRR educational intervention is effective in improving adolescents' knowledge and attitudes and can be used as a promotive and preventive strategy in school-based reproductive health programs.
