Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in improving the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at a rural junior high school in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, specifically in terms of accuracy (pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar) and fluency (smoothness and self-confidence). A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was employed, involving 34 students selected through purposive sampling. The intervention consisted of four structured PjBL sessions over four weeks, incorporating collaborative projects such as dialogue creation, role-plays, and video presentations. Data were collected through speaking performance tests assessed using an analytic rubric and complemented by classroom observations. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, a paired-sample t-test, and Cohen`s d effect size. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in students` overall speaking performance, with the mean score increasing from 68.2 (Fair) in the pretest to 82.4 (Good) in the posttest (t(33) = -8.742, p < .001). The effect size was very large (d = 1.87). Observational data confirmed increased student engagement from 67% to 81%. The study concludes that PjBL effectively creates an authentic, collaborative, and low-anxiety learning environment that enhances both the accuracy and fluency of speaking skills among rural junior high school students.

Abstract

This study examines the botting massamang tradition in Ulaweng Subdistrict, Bone Regency, from the perspectives of community beliefs and Islamic law. This tradition involves the simultaneous celebration of multiple weddings within a single family and continues to spark debate; some members of the community view it as a taboo that can disrupt family harmony, while others regard it as a social custom that does not conflict with Islamic law. This study employs a qualitative method using a case study approach, incorporating sociological, normative theological, and phenomenological perspectives through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal differing viewpoints influenced by levels of religious understanding and adherence to local customs. In Islamic law, this practice is permitted as long as the pillars and conditions of marriage are fulfilled; however, the belief that it brings bad luck without evidence constitutes superstition that needs to be corrected. Thus, botting massamang can be understood as a valid custom (urf shahih) if it brings benefits, and as a corrupt custom (urf fasid) if it contradicts the principle of tawhid.

Abstract

In the study of fiqh jināyah, bullying is classified as a jarīmah (criminal act) that threatens the preservation of life (ḥifẓ al-nafs) and protection of dignity (ḥifẓ al-‘irḍ), ultimately leading to the deterioration of human relationships. This study analyzes the implementation of a compassion-based curriculum grounded in Pangadereng values within higher education institutions as a preventive framework (sadd al-żarī‘ah) against bullying. The research employs a qualitative method with phenomenological and fiqh approaches. Primary data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations conducted in four regencies in South Sulawesi, namely Bone, Soppeng, Wajo, and Sinjai. The findings indicate that the harmonization of Pangadereng values within the compassion-based curriculum conceptually occupies the position of ‘urf ṣaḥīḥ, serving as a behavioral guideline for the Bugis community. Empirically, the curriculum has proven effective in preventing bullying by shaping students’ perspectives to promote mutual respect and empathy. The transformation of local wisdom functions as a mechanism to block pathways to criminal behavior in accordance with the concept of sadd al-żarī‘ah and aligns with the objectives of Islamic law within the framework of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah. This study concludes that integrating local wisdom into character education can serve as a form of Islamic public policy (siyāsah shar‘iyyah) aimed at fostering a more humanistic educational environment. Furthermore, this study enriches the discourse of contemporary fiqh al-jināyah by positioning living societal values as a strategic framework for mitigating violence in academic settings.
