Abstract

This research regarding the use of YouTube learning media in ssocial studies subjects aims to determine its influence or impact on students as seen from the learning outcomes scores in class VII at SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Pinyuh. This research was conducted using a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample used comprises students from the class with the lowest average formative scores. The conclusive findings of the research suggest that using YouTube as an educational tool in the classroom positively impacts students' academic achievements. This is evident from the student's learning outcomes after the treatment, where most students showed significant improvement: 50% (N=16) reached the "Developing as Expected" category, and 22% (N=7) reached the "Highly Developing" category. Furthermore, only a few students fell into the "Not Yet Developing" category after the treatment, at 6% (N=2). This result is also supported by the effect size test, which is 2.30. This suggests that using YouTube as a learning medium significantly influences the learning outcomes of 7th-grade social studies students at SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Pinyuh, specifically on the topic “Mengenal Lokasi Tempat Tinggal."

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) constitutes a pedagogical approach to English language acquisition. It provides students by learning language in a certain context. Studies on implementing group discussion have been done, but not focusing on their engagement. Thus, this study investigates student engagement in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) group discussions at a university level. ESP courses are designed to meet the specific language needs of students in professional or academic contexts, enhancing their communication skills relevant to their fields. The research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing thematic analysis to explore students' experiences and perspectives. Data were collected through classroom observations and interviews with eight undergraduate students from two higher education institutions in Indonesia. The findings reveal that group discussions in ESP classes significantly enhance students' oral communication skills, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. However, challenges such as unequal participation and language anxiety were also identified. The study underscores the importance of effective moderation and structured discussions to ensure equitable participation and maximize engagement. These insights have practical implications for improving instructional strategies in ESP courses, ultimately fostering a more engaging and effective learning environment. Keywords: English for Specific Purposes, group discussion, students’ engagement

Abstract

Poverty is a major issue faced by developing countries, including Myanmar. This article analyzes the level of poverty and economic factors affecting these conditions in Myanmar. Using a qualitative approach with literature review methods, this study collects secondary data from various literatures, reports, and previous research. The findings indicate that poverty in Myanmar is exacerbated by factors such as political instability, ineffective economic policies, and prolonged internal conflicts. The military coup and the COVID-19 pandemic have significantly reduced economic growth, increased poverty rates, and worsened living conditions. Additionally, international sanctions and the decline in bilateral aid have contributed to the ongoing economic crisis. The role of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in addressing poverty in Myanmar is a crucial focus of this study. The study concludes that collective efforts from various parties are necessary to address poverty in Myanmar through economic policy reforms, political stability improvements, and sustained international aid.

Abstract

Study habit is key to the success of the learning process. The study habit can be obtained when students have the intention to do so. Generally, the intention arises from repeated actions. In the TUTEP training class, the habits of the students during the training program can determine the test result. Thus, this study aims to examine the effect of study habits among the students or trainees on increasing their TUTEP scores. A descriptive-correlation method was used to describe the positive day-to-day habits that the trainees did to increase their TUTEP scores. The study involved respondents who attended the TUTEP training class and obtained a significant improvement in their TUTEP score before and after participating in the training. The main instrument in this study was the Palsane and Sharma Study Habit Inventory (Looyeh et al., 2017). The instrument has eight sub-scales of study habits. The results indicated that the significant test obtained was a ttest value of 0.738, where the ttest value was greater than ttable (0.738 0.254). In other words, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between study habits and increased TUTEP scores of the trainees. Furthermore, based on the highest average value (mean) of study habits which was obtained from respondents, three indicators yielded the highest scores, namely the exam (4.66), the health (4.59), and the time management indicators (4.36).

Abstract

This research examines the conflict between Indonesia and Malaysia over the claim to batik as a cultural heritage. Batik, a traditional art form from Indonesia, has long been an important cultural symbol. However, Malaysia’s claim to batik has sparked significant controversy and tension between the two countries. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding cultural heritage disputes in the context of international relations, as they not only involve cultural pride but also economic and diplomatic factors. Using a literature review method, this study analyzes secondary data from books, articles, and scholarly journals to understand the background, developments, and resolutions of this conflict. The key findings highlight Indonesia's successful effort in registering batik as part of UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009, which provided international recognition and protection for batik. Additionally, the study explores the legal frameworks, including both soft and hard law, that help protect cultural heritage from such claims. The resolution process demonstrates the role of international diplomacy and legal measures in addressing disputes over cultural heritage. The research concludes that while cultural similarities between Indonesia and Malaysia complicate matters, a diplomatic approach supported by international law and UNESCO’s mediation has helped safeguard Indonesia's cultural identity. This study underscores the importance of cooperation in preserving cultural heritage and the essential role of international organizations in managing such conflicts.
