Abstract

The present study intends to examine the influence of the halal business and Sharia financial assets on economic growth in Indonesia. The research method requires a quantitative methodology. Research data was acquired in time series form from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Financial Services Authority (OJK), and State of the Global Islamic Economy Report (SGIE). The VAR approach is used for analysis once the data is interpolated monthly. The findings in this research suggest a favorable and significant association between the halal industry and economic growth in Indonesia in the short term. Meanwhile, Islamic financial assets significantly affect economic growth in Indonesia. According to the results of the Granger causality test, a one-way causal relationship exists between economic development in Indonesia and the halal industry. The research results demonstrate that the halal industry is essential in supporting economic growth in Indonesia. With this research, the halal industry and Sharia financial assets can improve Indonesia's economic growth by increasing the halal sector.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia still faces economic development disparities, making it important to examine whether inclusive growth can be achieved through Islamic monetary instruments and Islamic social funds. This study employs Gross Domestic Product (LGDP), Bank Indonesia Sharia Certificates (LSBIS), Bank Indonesia Sharia Deposit Facilities (LFASBIS), and Zakat, Infaq, and Sadaqah (LZIS) as variables. Objective: This study aims to explore how Islamic monetary instruments and Islamic social funds affect Indonesia’s economic growth. Methods: A quantitative explanatory approach was employed using monthly data from 2017–2023 obtained from BPS, Bank Indonesia, and BAZNAS. Data were analyzed using the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), supported by the Augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF), Johansen cointegration, Granger causality, Impulse Response Function (IRF), and Forecast Error Variance Decomposition (FEVD) tests through EViews 11. Results: The results show sparse and predominantly unidirectional Granger causality relationships. Based on the short-run and long-run coefficients, the Islamic variables do not have a significant influence on LGDP in the short run, while LSBIS, LZIS, and LFASBIS significantly contribute to economic growth in the long run. The FEVD results indicate that LSBIS accounts for the highest percentage of variance in LGDP (23.30%), followed by LZIS (2.16%) and LFASBIS, which contributes only 0.16%. Conclusion: The results indicate that Islamic monetary instruments and Islamic social funds have weak short-term effects but strong long-run relationships with economic growth, suggesting a gradual adjustment process in Indonesia’s Islamic economic transmission mechanism, as well as the need for timely policy coordination to foster more inclusive and sustainable growth.

Abstract

Background: This study investigates the influence of cognitive and emotional biases on investment decisions in the Indonesian Sharia stock market. Method: Using a mixed-method approach with a sequential explanatory strategy, quantitative data were analyzed with Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS), followed by qualitative insights through interviews, observations, and documentation. Results: The findings reveal that emotional bias indirectly affects investment decisions through investor behavior, while cognitive bias also shows a significant influence. Investor behavior plays a crucial mediating role, reflecting how biases are translated into real investment actions. Sharia-based investors tend to be more cautious and guided by religious values, which function as a filter in decision-making, yet they remain vulnerable to emotional factors such as overreaction and herd behavior. Institutional investors appear more systematic in managing biases compared to individual investors, who are more easily influenced by emotions. The study highlights the importance of behavioral factors in shaping investment decisions in Sharia markets, suggesting that financial literacy, investor education, and long-term strategies are essential to minimize the negative effects of cognitive and emotional biases. Conclusion: These findings contribute to understanding investor psychology in Islamic finance and provide insights for regulators and practitioners to strengthen market stability.

Abstract

Background – The increasing prevalence of fraud cases in various government institutions, including the embezzlement of shop rental funds, cooking oil corruption, and bribery in the P3K recruitment process, indicates that fraud remains a serious issue that threatens the integrity of pubFlic institutions. Aim – The aim of this research is to empirically investigate the influence of morality, religiosity, and employee integrity on financial management fraud within the Government of Labuhan Batu Regency. Design / methodology / approach – This study involved 60 employees of the Labuhan Batu Regency Government. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using classical assumption tests, hypothesis testing, and multiple regression analysis. Findings – The results show that morality, religiosity, and employee integrity each have a significant effect on financial management fraud. Higher levels of morality, religiosity, and integrity are associated with a lower tendency to engage in fraudulent behavior. Simultaneous testing confirms that these three variables jointly influence financial management fraud. Conclusion - Organizations are encouraged to strengthen ethical awareness by promoting moral values, reinforcing religiosity, and cultivating employee integrity to minimize the risk of financial management fraud Research implication – These findings indicate that morality, religiosity, and employee integrity play a crucial role in influencing the occurrence of fraud in government financial management. Limitations – This study is limited by its small sample size and narrow scope, as it only involves respondents from a single institution, namely the Government of Labuhan Batu Regency. Consequently, the findings may have limited generalizability to other government institutions with different organizational characteristics.

Abstract

Abstract

Happiness (falah) constitutes the ultimate objective of Islamic economics, encompassing both material prosperity and spiritual well-being within the framework of Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah. However, conventional welfare indicators—such as GDP and income—remain limited in capturing the moral, psychological, and social dimensions of human well-being. This study aims to empirically examine the contribution of the five dimensions of Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah—preservation of religion (ḥifẓ al-dīn), intellect (ḥifẓ al-‘aql), life (ḥifẓ al-nafs), progeny (ḥifẓ al-nasl), and wealth (ḥifẓ al-māl)—to Indonesia’s National Happiness Index. Using balanced provincial panel data covering 34 provinces across three observation periods (2014, 2017, and 2021), this research applies a Fixed Effects panel regression model, selected based on Chow and Hausman tests, to estimate the impact of each dimension. The findings indicate that ḥifẓ al-nafs (proxied by labor force participation) and ḥifẓ al-nasl (life expectancy) exert statistically significant but negative effects on happiness. In contrast, ḥifẓ al-dīn (zakat), ḥifẓ al-‘aql (literacy rate), and ḥifẓ al-māl (GRDP per capita) show positive but statistically insignificant relationships. These results suggest the presence of non-material trade-offs, where increased economic participation and demographic improvements do not necessarily translate into higher subjective well-being. The study provides empirical support for the argument that national happiness cannot be adequately explained by economic growth alone. Instead, it requires a multidimensional framework that integrates spiritual, social, and ethical dimensions, as emphasized in Islamic welfare theory. This research contributes to the literature by bridging Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah with empirical happiness measurement and offers policy implications for designing more holistic and value-based development indicators in Muslim-majority contexts.

Abstract

This study analyzes the existence of short-term and long-term relationships between zakat variables and Indonesia's economic growth in the 2015-2018 period. Zakat as one of Islamic philanthropy is used to prosper Muslims. Zakat is divided into productive zakat and consumptive zakat. This study uses a cointegration test which is one of the tests of the VAR VECM method to determine whether or not there are short-term and long-term effects. The data used uses time-series data from 2015-2018 with data interpolated to monthly period data. The results show that zakat affects Indonesia's economic growth both in the short and long term.

Abstract

Background: The success of economic development is reflected in the level of welfare experienced by the society. According to data from the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the Islamic economy has become one of the largest contributors to the national economy, accounting for 46 percent of the total GDP. This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic banking in supporting economic growth in Indonesia. Method: A quantitative approach is employed using secondary monthly time series data covering the period from January 2018 to December 2023. The research applies the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) method in its restricted form, known as the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), using EViews 12 software. The variables used include total financing (TP) as a proxy for financial deepening, BOPO as a proxy for banking efficiency, FDR as a proxy for risk management, the number of bank offices (JK) as a proxy for financial inclusion, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a proxy for economic growth. Results: The results reveal that the role of the Islamic banking sector in Indonesia’s economic growth is stronger and more significant in the long run than in the short run. In the short term, total financing (TP) has not shown a significant effect on GDP, while banking efficiency (BOPO) exerts a direct and significant influence. In the long term, however, total financing and banking efficiency exhibit a more stable and significant relationship with economic growth, with Islamic banking efficiency (BOPO) contributing the most to GDP, at around 20–21%. Conclusion: These findings indicate that Islamic banking plays a pivotal role in sustaining Indonesia’s long-term economic growth, aligning with the objectives of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah in realizing economic welfare (ḥifẓ al-māl and ḥifẓ al-nafs) and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

Abstract

This study analyzes leading and potential economic sectors in South Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra, in the post-pandemic period using the Location Quotient (LQ) and Shift Share methods based on Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) at constant prices from 2021–2024. Unlike previous studies that primarily focus on descriptive sectoral contributions, this research integrates comparative and competitive advantage analyses to provide a more comprehensive understanding of regional economic dynamics. The LQ analysis identifies three base sectors: Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (average LQ = 1.8222); Mining and Quarrying (average LQ = 8.6937); and Public Administration, Defence, and Compulsory Social Security (average LQ = 1.7817). Meanwhile, the Shift Share analysis reveals that eleven sectors possess positive competitive advantages (Cij > 0). The combined results classify two sectors as leading sectors, one sector as potential, nine sectors as developing, and five sectors as lagging. However, the Public Administration sector should be interpreted as an administratively dominant sector rather than a productive market-driven source of regional competitiveness. The findings indicate that post-pandemic economic strengthening in South Tapanuli should prioritize productive base sectors, enhance the competitiveness of developing sectors, and encourage regional economic diversification. Theoretically, this study demonstrates the relevance of integrating LQ and Shift Share approaches in analyzing regional sectoral transformation. Practically, the results provide evidence-based insights for local governments in designing policies related to resource allocation, productive sector development, and regional competitiveness enhancement.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has encouraged an increase in online shopping activities among students and has the potential to foster a consumptive lifestyle. From the perspective of Islamic economics, consumption behavior should be based on the principles of balance, prudence, and avoidance of excessive behavior. This study aims to analyze the influence of online shopping intensity and Islamic financial behavior on the consumptive lifestyle of students in Medan City. The research method employed is a quantitative approach using multiple linear regression analysis. Data was collected through the distribution of questionnaires to 400 active undergraduate (S1) students residing in Medan City, with a sample size determined using the Slovin formula at a 5 percent margin of error. The results of the study indicate that the intensity of online shopping has a positive and significant effect on students’ consumptive lifestyles. Additionally, Islamic financial behavior has also been proven to have a significant effect on consumption lifestyles. Together, the two independent variables were able to explain 65.5 percent of the variation in students’ consumption lifestyles. These findings indicate that the high intensity of online shopping can reinforce the tendency toward overconsumption, while Islamic financial behavior has not fully functioned as a consumption regulator amidst a strong digital culture. This research makes an empirical contribution to the development of Islamic economic literature by emphasizing the importance of strengthening the internalization of contextual and applicable Islamic financial values in addressing the challenges of consumption behavior in the digital era.
