Abstract

Materi pembelajaran Pendidikan Agama Islam, khususnya materi tentang Q.S. The teaching material for Islamic Education, particularly regarding Q.S. Al-Ḥujurāt/49:13 and Hadith about diversity, is perceived as less engaging for elementary school students. This is due to the requirement for students to memorize all content, combined with the teacher’s monotonous lecturing style, which tends to bore the students. Learning activities often revolve around the teacher and fail to involve students as active participants in the learning process; students are merely positioned as passive recipients of knowledge, with little opportunity for self-development. One way to address this issue is through the use of interactive audio-visual learning media. This media has proven effective in helping students understand the messages within the Qur’an and Hadith, is user-friendly, and enhances student learning activities. As a result, the learning process becomes more engaging and meaningful, ultimately improving student learning outcomes.

Abstract

Sidewalks remain a significant issue in urban development, particularly in large cities in Indonesia, including Bandung. To date, sidewalk development in Bandung has not received sufficient attention. Sidewalks, as public spaces, are unable to fulfill their intended functions properly. Economic encroachment is the main cause, manifested in the proliferation of street vendors, illegal parking, numerous provider poles, billboards, and PLN electrical poles, all of which "plunder" public space intended for pedestrians. This study aims to examine how the Bandung city government manages sidewalks as public spaces from the perspective of good governance, focusing on transparency, participation, accountability, and law enforcement. Through a literature review approach, the study found that in sidewalk management, the Bandung city government has not fully met the principles of good governance. The city government lacks transparency, as evidenced by insufficient socialization about the function of sidewalks. In terms of participation, the public has not been adequately involved in sidewalk management, as shown by the uneven distribution of sidewalk development. Furthermore, law enforcement remains weak, with violators of sidewalk usage not facing strict penalties. As a result, the overall management of sidewalks as public spaces in Bandung is not adequately accountable.

Abstract

This study adopts a Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) approach grounded in Halliday’s theoretical framework to investigate Theme-Rheme structures in the Integrated Korean Language textbooks . This research is significant as prior studies on Korean language textbooks have largely overlooked the interplay between thematic structure and ideological representation, leaving a gap in understanding how discourse patterns contribute to implicit cultural messaging. The primary objective is to examine the deployment of marked and unmarked themes as well as the patterns of thematic progression within narrative and descriptive texts. The data are drawn from Volumes 3 and 4 of the textbooks, which encompass cultural, object-related, and activity-based themes. The findings indicate that the majority of clauses adhere to the Simple Linear Thematic Progression pattern, wherein the rheme of one clause becomes the theme of the subsequent clause, thereby contributing to a cohesive and logically sequenced discourse. In certain instances, Complex Linear Progression patterns were also observed, offering extended elaboration of central ideas. Material and relational processes are predominantly employed to represent actions and identity relationships, illustrating how lexical choices such as verbs and conjunctions function to structure the narrative. Furthermore, the analysis reveals the implicit integration of feminist ideology gender roles within the texts, particularly concerning evolving gender roles in contemporary Korean households. The thematic patterns identified reflect broader social values and ideological transformations embedded in the educational material, conveying underlying messages that promote gender equality and advocate for more equitable social roles. The thematic patterns identified in the texts function not only to organize information but also to foreground specific social actors and actions that align with feminist ideology. By consistently thematizing female subjects, progressive roles, or relational identities, the texts reflect and reinforce broader social values of gender equality and contribute to the ideological transformation toward more equitable gender norms.

Abstract

This research aims to explore and analyze the raciolinguistic dynamics that influence teaching and learning experiences, as well as educational access, within global EFL contexts. Through an in-depth review of current literature, this research explores how language biases and hierarchies influence educational structures, create inequalities and affect social mobility. The study not only highlights the issues of raciolinguistic but also expands critical understanding of the role of language in reproducing or undermining social injustice. The research shows how raciolinguistic ideas have been globalized and adapted to a variety of circumstances by utilizing bibliometric analysis of the Scopus database and applying it to a wide range of previously published works. It also highlights the need for educational practices that bring these ideas into play to solve racial and linguistic disparities. The results show that racialolinguistic ideas are not only globally spread, but also adapted in various educational contexts, reflecting how language policies and pedagogical practices can reinforce or challenge social injustice. Using a cross-country survey and case studies, this study identifies adaptive strategies used in EFL teaching to deal with linguistic and racial challenges. In addition, the findings emphasize the importance of policy-based approaches and more inclusive pedagogies to reduce language and racial disparities in education. By cross-national surveys and case studies, the study emphasizes the significance of adaptive techniques and the complex interactions between language and race in EFL classroom.

Abstract

Improving students’ literacy has drawn various scholars’ attention as technology advances. This systematic literature review aims at investigating and synthesizing how multimodal approach is applied in the teaching of storytelling to improving students’ literacy. This study focuses on several aspects of multimodal applied in storytelling, such as components, media, objectives, skills improved, linguistic theories, and the complexity of the applied approach across different level of education. There are 71 articles collected to make a synthesis of storytelling which are published in range of 2017 to 2023. The selected articles are then compressed to 33 for articles based on the criteria of inclusion and exclusion. The study finds that the use of multimodal literacies in different level of study vary in the modes and media. In early educations, multimodal storytelling approach uses simpler components like audio and visual components but less digital tools. In the primary to secondary education, the combination of audio, visual and digital tool is balanced, while in higher to university education, multimodal approach is more complex with the combination of digital storytelling with linguistic theories such as MDA, social semiotics, and structural semiotics. This study is expected to provide other researchers or teachers a guideline of designing multimodal approach in storytelling classroom more deeply. By categorizing multimodal storytelling practices across educational level, this study offers practical guidance for educators to tailor their approaches to students’ developmental needs in literacy skills through storytelling and the selection of appropriate tools and techniques for diverse educational needs.

Abstract

Numerous studies suggest that transitivity system is applicable to examine characters in traditional literatures such as novels or short stories. Today, videogame is considered as a modern literary work by offering interactive and innovative way to deliver the narrative. The present study investigates the characterization of Connor Kenway – the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed III (2012) videogame, using transitivity system. This study aims to examine the identified process types in terms of their contributions to Connor’s characterization. This study employs Creswell (2018) descriptive qualitative method involving textual analysis of the dialogues in the videogame. The dialogues were transcribed and analyzed following the concepts of Systemic Functional Linguistics on transitivity system. The study applies purposeful sampling technique, in which the data are categorized into three groups; dialogues spoken by Connor himself, the supporting characters, and the villain characters. Focusing on the use of transitivity system, the analysis found that the identified transitivity processes uniquely construe the portrayal of Connor’s complex characterization. Firstly, he is portrayed as a vengeful man. Secondly, he is portrayed as an intelligent man with high cognitive abilities. Thirdly, he is portrayed as a hero and savior according to the supporting characters while also as a criminal and savage according to the villain characters. Fourthly, he is portrayed as a man with cautious nature. Lastly, he is portrayed as a useful informant. The result of this study suggests that transitivity system is a versatile tool for examining the portrayal of characterization in videogames.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to investigate how the teaching and learning processes of English Education Program Students occur in creating multimodal texts using the Genre Based Approach teaching method. The study seeks to demonstrate that Genre Based Approach, as a teaching method for academic reading and writing courses, can assist students in creating their own multimodal texts, which combine words and images. Participatory Case Study is employed as the research design, aiming to delve deeper into the phenomenon of teaching and learning processes within it. The use of field notes in each phase of the learning activities is crucial in this research as it clearly records interactions between lecturers and students in the classroom. This study provides evidence that the analysis based on the Image Framework analysis (O'Halloran, 2008) in collaboration with the Transitivity System from Systemic Functional Linguistics (Emilia, 2014) enables students to comprehend multimodal texts, analyze them, and ultimately create their own multimodal texts using the genre of analytical exposition. The results of this research demonstrate that the Genre Based Approach teaching process, conducted over 14 sessions from February 21 to April 10, 2024, has improved the reading and writing abilities of fourth-semester students who will be undertaking the PLP program in their fifth semester. This improvement is evidenced by the pre-test and post-test results, which measured understanding of multimodal texts and the production of multimodal texts.
