Abstract

This study aims to analyze themes as elements of teachers’ questioning strategies as a scaffold for learners to understand and construct knowledge and their contribution to presenting knowledge in writing. This study followed a qualitative case research design involving two teachers who differed in their experience profiles in the teaching of hortatory exposition to 11th-grade EFL students in the Indonesian context. The data included teachers' questions and students' texts analyzed by deploying the conception of a Theme system in Systemic Functional Linguistics to identify how themes present a topic, contribute to the management of interaction, and structure ideas. The findings show that both teachers emphasized more on topical themes that function to familiarize the learners with the topics than themes that function to hedge and confirm the topics. These thematic features contribute to constructing emerging and distinctive features of the students’ hortatory exposition writing. It was found that the novice teacher posed more frequent questions on all themes that indicated more varied questioning strategies. Moreover, the quality of the students’ hortatory exposition essays relied on the presentation and sequence of themes and arguments attributed to the teachers’ questions. Overall, the study indicates the significance of teachers' questioning strategies for eliciting the students’ presentation and construction of knowledge in their argumentative style.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate face identification methods in the context of employee recognition as a solution to the problem of attendance that still uses manual methods or applications without identity validation. The main goal is to achieve optimal accuracy and consistency in the identification process using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) with FaceNet and Haar Cascade. This research focuses on the challenge of managing employee attendance, particularly for those who are working remotely, which can be vulnerable to fraudulent activity. The proposed solution combines facial recognition to enhance identity verification, attendance tracking, and assist companies in achieving their goals. The study employed a dataset of 1,050 employee face data and divided it into three scenarios for training and testing ratios: the first scenario (80:20), the second scenario (70:30), and the third scenario (60:40). The results indicate that the model in the first scenario had the highest accuracy value of 98% and outperformed the models in the second and third scenarios in terms of precision, recall, and f1-score, with values of 98.60%, 98.70%, and 98.60%, respectively. The results indicate that the model used in the first scenario is the most effective in classifying predicted cases and consistently predicting employee identification. Based on these findings, we recommend implementing suggestions such as adding datasets and analyzing important classes to improve the accuracy and generalization of face identification models in the context of employee recognition. Combining facial recognition improves identity verification and attendance tracking, making it easier for companies to manage employee attendance with greater effectiveness.

Abstract

Microplastic contamination posed a significant threat to mangrove ecosystems, impacting biodiversity and water quality. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a multimedia filtration system using silica sand, zeolite, activated carbon, blood clam shells, and gravel in reducing microplastic levels in mangrove waters. Water samples were collected from the Wonorejo Mangrove Ecotourism in Surabaya, Indonesia, and were treated using two filtration reactors: Reactor 1 with sand media and Reactor 2 with clamshell media. The downward-flow filtration system demonstrated promising results, with Reactor 1 achieving a 54-60% microplastic removal efficiency and Reactor 2 showing superior performance with a 61-65% efficiency. Fiber-type microplastics were most effectively removed, with Reactor 2 achieving a 67% reduction. The findings highlighted the potential of clamshell media in enhancing filtration efficiency and promoting environmental sustainability. While the system offered a viable solution for mitigating microplastic pollution in aquatic environments, challenges such as scalability, cost-effectiveness, and long-term maintenance required further research. Future studies should focus on optimizing filtration media and assessing real-world applicability for broader environmental conservation efforts.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the language attitude tendencies of the millennial Sundanese-speaking group in the city of Bandung, along with the factors that influence them. A sociolinguistic approach using a mixed-methods design is employed to measure the dominance of language attitudes among millennials within various domains of their daily communication. This can indicate whether this generation is inclined to maintain their mother tongue or shift toward using other languages in their interactions. A total of 97 individuals responded to the distributed questionnaire; however, only 80 met the predetermined criteria. In this context, the researcher utilized a modified version of the instrument developed by Cohn (2013). In addition, interviews and observations were conducted to gain a deeper perspective on the language attitude tendencies of this millennial group. Millennials like Indonesian and international languages better than Sundanese online because they perceive them as more functional and global. However, though Sundanese use declines in everyday life, a significant majority of respondents are also concerned about language conservation and have encouraged electronic means of preserving Sundanese to thrive in new communication spaces. This study determines that while millennials are cognizant of Sundanese’s cultural and identity value, pragmatic limitations such as speech-level complexity and technological influence are contributing factors in its gradual decline. The findings emphasize the need for innovative strategies, including online content creation and policy implementation, to preserve the use and liveliness of Sundanese among the younger generations.

Abstract

The use of e-learning presents new challenges for students in terms of improving their critical thinking skills and procedural knowledge in grammar learning. As a result, lecturers need a specific framework while creating an e-learning course. The application of SAMR model is a solution. One of the most dominant traits among students is and self-efficacy. The level of student self-efficacy was controlled in this study to measure the effect of using the SAMR model. This study uses a quasi-experimental design with a factorial design. This study involved 152 students in the experimental and control groups. The research analysis technique was tested using MANOVA. The results and conclusions show that: (1) the SAMR model has a significant effect on students' critical thinking skills and procedural knowledge; (2) self-efficacy significantly affects students' critical thinking skills and procedural knowledge; and (3) a combination of learning models and self-efficacy has a significant effect on procedural knowledge, but does not significantly affect critical thinking skills. This study contributes and improves the quality of e-learning implementation techniques, particularly in the area of English learning.

Abstract

This study examines mood and modality in report texts, comparing student-generated writing with a textbook model to explore how these linguistic features construct interpersonal meaning. Using the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics, the analysis focuses on mood types (declarative, interrogative, imperative) and modality expressions (probability, obligation) to identify patterns and discrepancies between the two text types. The findings reveal that both texts predominantly utilize declarative moods, reflecting the genre's objective of presenting factual information. However, the textbook model demonstrates greater grammatical accuracy and linguistic precision, while the student text shows variability and frequent errors in mood realization. In terms of modality, the textbook employs a balanced range of modal verbs to express nuanced attitudes and probabilities, contributing to its authoritative tone. Conversely, the student text relies heavily on basic modal verbs like *will*, limiting its ability to convey complex interpersonal meanings. These differences highlight a significant gap between textbook standards and student writing practices, suggesting the need for explicit instruction on mood and modality to enhance students' academic writing skills. This study underscores the importance of integrating targeted pedagogical strategies that address both grammatical proficiency and genre awareness. By bridging the gap between idealized models and student performance, educators can better support learners in mastering the linguistic features essential for effective report writing. The findings contribute to understanding how mood and modality operate within educational texts and offer insights for improving teaching practices in language education.

Abstract

Materi pembelajaran Pendidikan Agama Islam, khususnya materi tentang Q.S. The teaching material for Islamic Education, particularly regarding Q.S. Al-Ḥujurāt/49:13 and Hadith about diversity, is perceived as less engaging for elementary school students. This is due to the requirement for students to memorize all content, combined with the teacher’s monotonous lecturing style, which tends to bore the students. Learning activities often revolve around the teacher and fail to involve students as active participants in the learning process; students are merely positioned as passive recipients of knowledge, with little opportunity for self-development. One way to address this issue is through the use of interactive audio-visual learning media. This media has proven effective in helping students understand the messages within the Qur’an and Hadith, is user-friendly, and enhances student learning activities. As a result, the learning process becomes more engaging and meaningful, ultimately improving student learning outcomes.

Abstract

Sidewalks remain a significant issue in urban development, particularly in large cities in Indonesia, including Bandung. To date, sidewalk development in Bandung has not received sufficient attention. Sidewalks, as public spaces, are unable to fulfill their intended functions properly. Economic encroachment is the main cause, manifested in the proliferation of street vendors, illegal parking, numerous provider poles, billboards, and PLN electrical poles, all of which "plunder" public space intended for pedestrians. This study aims to examine how the Bandung city government manages sidewalks as public spaces from the perspective of good governance, focusing on transparency, participation, accountability, and law enforcement. Through a literature review approach, the study found that in sidewalk management, the Bandung city government has not fully met the principles of good governance. The city government lacks transparency, as evidenced by insufficient socialization about the function of sidewalks. In terms of participation, the public has not been adequately involved in sidewalk management, as shown by the uneven distribution of sidewalk development. Furthermore, law enforcement remains weak, with violators of sidewalk usage not facing strict penalties. As a result, the overall management of sidewalks as public spaces in Bandung is not adequately accountable.gb777

Abstract

This study adopts a Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) approach grounded in Halliday’s theoretical framework to investigate Theme-Rheme structures in the Integrated Korean Language textbooks . This research is significant as prior studies on Korean language textbooks have largely overlooked the interplay between thematic structure and ideological representation, leaving a gap in understanding how discourse patterns contribute to implicit cultural messaging. The primary objective is to examine the deployment of marked and unmarked themes as well as the patterns of thematic progression within narrative and descriptive texts. The data are drawn from Volumes 3 and 4 of the textbooks, which encompass cultural, object-related, and activity-based themes. The findings indicate that the majority of clauses adhere to the Simple Linear Thematic Progression pattern, wherein the rheme of one clause becomes the theme of the subsequent clause, thereby contributing to a cohesive and logically sequenced discourse. In certain instances, Complex Linear Progression patterns were also observed, offering extended elaboration of central ideas. Material and relational processes are predominantly employed to represent actions and identity relationships, illustrating how lexical choices such as verbs and conjunctions function to structure the narrative. Furthermore, the analysis reveals the implicit integration of feminist ideology gender roles within the texts, particularly concerning evolving gender roles in contemporary Korean households. The thematic patterns identified reflect broader social values and ideological transformations embedded in the educational material, conveying underlying messages that promote gender equality and advocate for more equitable social roles. The thematic patterns identified in the texts function not only to organize information but also to foreground specific social actors and actions that align with feminist ideology. By consistently thematizing female subjects, progressive roles, or relational identities, the texts reflect and reinforce broader social values of gender equality and contribute to the ideological transformation toward more equitable gender norms.
