Abstract

The Ethnomathematics-based STEM (Ethno-STEM) approach is currently one of the topics that receive attention to improve students' conceptual understanding. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the Ethno-STEM approach on students’ conceptual understanding. This study utilized quantitative data with a quasi-experiment. One class was chosen through a simple random sampling technique. The instruments used were conceptual understanding tests and an observation sheet of learning implementation. The data analysis techniques used were descriptive and inferential analysis, as well as the criteria of effect in instruction. Key findings point towards the importance of building an Ethno-STEAM approach that supports the conceptual understandings. Identification of critical elements of the teachers’ supports led to recommendations for teacher preparation for mathematical learning. We see the study as having value for research and practice by raising a new approach related to Ethno-STEAM and demonstrating the need for the development of theory to explain the relationships identified by this study. Key Words:

Abstract

Reasoning has been extensively studied by many experts. However, Research on student reasoning in trigonometric problem solving, particularly those related to logical thinking skills is still sorely needed. This study aimed to explore students' reasoning in solving trigonometric function problems regarding logical thinking skills. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach. The research subjects involved high school students in Palopo, Indonesia. Based on the logical ability test results, three subjects were selected, namely students with high, medium, and low logical abilities. Research instruments in mathematical problem-solving tasks and interview guidelines are valid and reliable. Data collection was carried out through task-based interviews and think-aloud. The results of the study: (1) the reasoning subjects with high and moderate logical abilities in solving trigonometric function problems are the same in every type of question, always starting with inductive reasoning and then doing deductive reasoning (2) the reasoning of subjects with high and medium logical abilities is different in solving trigonometric function problems in the initial identification. Subjects with low logical ability showed no mental activity in solving trigonometric function problems. The research finding is that the subject has a high logical ability and is solving trigonometric function problems first by inductive reasoning and then deductive reasoning. In general, it is concluded that students with high and moderate logical abilities use inductive and deductive thinking patterns interchangeably in solving trigonometric function problems.

Abstract

Geogebra is a mathematical software that can be used in mathematics, especially geometry, calculus, and dynamic algebra, with various features, especially visualization. Geogebra helps students identify and improve their visual skills in understanding mathematical concepts. This study aims to explore the mathematical technology knowledge of teachers based on Geo-Gebra applications in mathematics learning by integrating content and technology. This research is qualitative research that uses a single-case design to explore the teacher's mathematical technology knowledge and involved teachers (N = 8) from the field of mathematics at universities in the Central Region of Indonesia. Three types of data were collected during one semester, weekly observations, progress report description; and the developed learning design. This research shows that there are two categories of teachers' mathematical technology knowledge characteristics. First, moderate teachers produce simple designs and are still influ-enced by numerical and algebraic approaches. Second, expert teachers can use analytical skills to design step-by-step learning, involving animation to explain concepts, and the resulting designs are quite complex and structured. These two findings are useful for building teacher competencies regarding using GeoGebra ap-plication-based technology in learning mathematics.

Abstract

ABSTRACT. The emergence of antibiotic resistance and oxidative stress-related diseases highlights the urgent need for novel bioactive compounds. This study investigates the potential of Syzygium myrtifolium Walp. and its endophytic fungi as sources of antibacterial and antioxidant agents. Sixteen endophytic fungi isolates were obtained from six plant parts and identified morphologically. Thin layer chromatography (TLC)-based chemical profiling demonstrated comparable secondary metabolite patterns between the plant and its endophytic fungi, indicating possible shared biosynthetic pathways. Antibacterial screening using TLC-bioautography and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assays demonstrated that both the plant and endophytic fungi extracts inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, with Xylaria sp. showing notable activity. (SmDh4) exhibiting the strongest activity (MIC = 64 µg/mL). Antioxidant activity determined using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay indicated high to very high radical inhibition capacity, especially in SmRTd (AAI = 25.91) and SmAk1 (AAI = 24.97). Liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) analysis unique secondary metabolites on endophytic fungi, including L-α-palmitin, α-eleostearic acid, and 8-methylnaphthalene-1,2-diol, which were detected exclusively in the endophytic fungi extracts, highlighting their potential as alternative antibacterial and antioxidant agents. Keywords: Antibacterial, antioxidant, endophytic fungi, secondary metabolites, Syzygium myrtifolium Walp.

Abstract

Background: This study discusses the use of coil heads in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology to diagnose Temporomandibular Joint Disc Dislocation (TMJ). TMJ disc dislocation is a common condition of the temporomandibular joint that can hurt a person's jaw and make it difficult for them to open their mouth fully. This study sought to assess the effectiveness of MRI with coil heads performed in locating and diagnosing TMJ disc dislocations. Method: Analytic observational with cross-sectional design. A diagnostic test to assess the validity of MRI. Predictor analysis was performed using a multivariate logistic regression test. Result: This study shows disparities in the findings of MRI and RDC tests for detecting temporomandibular joint disc dislocations. Clinical complaints have a strong correlation with disc displacement on MRI and RDC. In the MRI, disc dislocation was significantly correlated with all panoramic examination factors. Only the impaction variable in RDC significantly influences disc dislocation. Asymmetrical condyle position on panoramic inspection and complaints present for more than a year on physical examination indicate disc dislocation. These findings imply that MRI is more effective at identifying displaced temporomandibular joint discs, leading to a more precise diagnosis. Conclusion: The diagnosis of TMJ disc dislocations often involves MRI with coil heads. Medical practitioners can more easily spot disc abnormalities or changes in position thanks to this technology, which offers an accurate and thorough image of the temporomandibular joint's anatomy
