Abstract

Institutional transformation within pesantren-based Islamic higher education institutions has Institutional transformation within pesantren-based Islamic higher education institutions has become an increasingly significant phenomenon, especially as these institutions seek to strengthen their position amid global competition. There are three purposes of the study: (1) the driving factors behind organizational change in pesantren-based Islamic universities, (2) the processes through which institutional transformation is implemented, and (3) the implications of these changes for institutional development. Employing a qualitative multi-case study approach, the research was conducted at Universitas Hasyim Asy’ari (UNHASY) in Jombang and Universitas Nurul Jadid (UNUJA) in Probolinggo. Methodologically, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The results indicate that institutional change is driven by three main factors: the pressure of global competition and market demands, the need to reinforce Islamic and pesantren-based values, and efforts to improve organizational effectiveness and efficiency. The transformation process is implemented incrementally through internal mergers between institutions under a single foundation. This research contributes to enhanced service quality and increased institutional competitiveness by drawing lessons from organizational changes that led to the restructuring of institutional governance in pesantren-based universities.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to develop a servant leadership model based on character education values to improve the quality of learning in educational institutions. This research is based on the need to advance education that focuses not only on cognitive aspects but also on student character development and staff professionalism. The method used was Research and Development (R&D), adapting the Borg & Gall model. The research was conducted at SMK PIKA Semarang for one semester, from January 2 to May 30, 2025. Informants in this study consisted of the principal, vice principal, teachers, school committee members, students, and administrative staff. The model was tested through a feasibility test (feasibility), a limited trial, and a large-scale trial involving 25 teachers and students. The results of the study indicate that the developed Servant Character Leadership (SCL) Model is theoretically feasible and practically effective in improving educational standards. The results of the model trial showed an overall increase in the effectiveness of school service leadership of 15.75% after the SCL model was implemented, as evidenced by improvements in indicators such as student engagement, learning outcomes, and teacher motivation. This model was also deemed highly practical, with an average practicality percentage of 89.33%. The SCL model's primary contribution is providing a holistic framework that integrates a service philosophy with character values (such as religiousness, nationalism, independence, mutual cooperation, and integrity), thus contributing significantly to creating a work ethic focused on character development within the educational environment.

Abstract

Character education, as an integral part of national education, faces serious challenges due to the impact of rapid digital technological advancement, which has led to a decline in students' character index, particularly in the aspects of independence and integrity. Religious culture in schools has emerged as a strategic approach to strengthen students’ spiritual and moral values. However, its implementation is still constrained by partial technical approaches and limited participation from the school environment and the wider community. This study aims to identify strategies employed by school principals in strengthening character education through religious culture at SMP Negeri 2 Sukodono, Sidoarjo. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentary studies. The findings reveal six key strategies: (a) integration of religious values into the curriculum, (b) modeling and exploration of values, (c) habitual religious practices, (d) collaboration with school committees and parents, (e) infrastructure adjustments, and (f) continuous evaluation. These findings support Dewey’s theory of habit formation and successfully address challenges such as student diversity and low parental involvement through inclusive approaches. Overall, the implementation of religious culture not only enhances students’ character but also fosters a harmonious school climate, contributing both theoretically and practically to the development of value-based leadership models and character education policies.

Abstract

Objective: This study introduces STRATEGIA (Strategic Reflective Action for Growth and Institutional Advantage), a reflective strategy formulation model designed to support schools in developing context-sensitive and strength-based strategic blueprints for institutional excellence. Method: Employing a design-based research approach, the model was piloted with 19 school principals through a structured training program. Data were collected via pre–post surveys, blueprint portfolio analysis, and reflective documentation to evaluate shifts in strategic thinking and planning competence. Results: Findings indicate substantial improvements in participants’ strategic understanding and blueprint development, with score increases ranging from 24% to 53%. Participants rated the model as clear, relevant, and practically applicable in the context of school planning. Novelty: STRATEGIA is distinguished by its integration of Appreciative Inquiry, Resource-Based View (VRIO), SOAR, Organizational DNA, PESTEL, and stakeholder mapping into a five-stage reflective process—Reflective Discovery, Signature Formulation, Strategic Visualization, Roadmap Development, and First-Year Strategic Initiatives. This innovative combination provides a practical and scalable planning framework that is rooted in institutional identity, offering a novel contribution to strategic leadership development in educational settings.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to qualitatively explore doctoral students’ perspectives on the academic support factors that influence the timely completion of their studies in the Doctoral Program in Educational Management at Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA). Method: Employing a phenomenological approach, the study involved many informants, including active students, alumni, and academic supervisors. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and limited observational studies. Results: The findings revealed three main themes: (1) social environment serves as a pillar of emotional and practical support, enhancing students’ academic resilience; (2) learning motivation acts as an internal driving force that maintains commitment and consistency throughout the study process; and (3) self-regulated learning (SRL) reflects students’ academic autonomy in managing time, setting goals, and evaluating their learning progress. These findings highlight that success in doctoral studies is not solely determined by individual capabilities but rather by the dynamic interplay of personal, social, and institutional factors. Novelty: The results of this study are expected to inform academic policymakers in designing strategies to enhance the quality of doctoral education and accelerate students’ study completion in a sustainable and contextually relevant manner.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the inhibiting and supporting factors in the implementation of academic supervision by school principals using a SWOT analysis approach based on a literature review. Through a systematic literature review of various research sources related to academic supervision and communication in educational management, it was found that strengths such as principal competence, structured supervision with effective communication between principals and teachers, and facility support are the main assets for successful supervision. Meanwhile, weaknesses such as time constraints, limited resources, and a lack of innovation in supervision and communication approaches remain challenges. Opportunities arise from supportive education policies, technological advances that can strengthen internal communication, and the role of active learning communities in sharing information and collaboration. However, threats such as dynamic policy changes and resistance to change require adaptive supervision strategies, open communication, and collaboration in order to optimize academic supervision. The results of this study provide an overview of strategies for school principals and policy makers to optimize academic supervision through effective communication approaches in order to improve teacher professionalism and the quality of learning in schools.
