Abstract

Contemporary educational discourse increasingly confronts crises of dehumanization, epistemic domination, and the erosion of ethical orientation within modern schooling systems. In response to these challenges, this article examines the educational philosophies of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas and Paulo Freire as two influential thinkers who, despite emerging from distinct civilizational and epistemological traditions, conceptualize education as a project of liberation. The study aims to explore how al-Attas’s Islamic spiritual epistemology and Freire’s critical pedagogy can be conceptually integrated to formulate a holistic framework for educational liberation. Employing a qualitative research design grounded in library research and thematic content analysis, this study systematically reviews and comparatively analyzes the primary works of both thinkers alongside authoritative secondary sources. The findings reveal that al-Attas emphasizes liberation from epistemological confusion—particularly the loss of adab—through the Islamization of knowledge, whereas Freire foregrounds emancipation from socio-political oppression through the cultivation of critical consciousness (conscientização). Despite these differences, both perspectives converge on the ethical mission of education as a process of humanization, moral responsibility, and transformative praxis. This article contributes theoretically by proposing an integrative paradigm that bridges Islamic spirituality and Western critical pedagogy, challenging the conventional secular–religious dichotomy in educational theory. Practically, it offers an alternative foundation for transformative education that is responsive to global crises of meaning, injustice, and cultural dislocation, thereby advancing a more comprehensive vision of liberatory education.

Abstract

This study aims to identify, analyze, and synthesize empirical findings concerning the influence of gadget use on the moral development of children and adolescents, based on reputable Scopus-indexed studies published within the past decade. The method employed is a systematic literature review utilizing the PRISMA approach, encompassing the selection of relevant empirical studies quantitative, qualitative, and longitudinal that examine variables related to gadget use, psychological processes such as empathy, self-regulation, and moral disengagement, as well as prosocial and antisocial behaviors. The results of the synthesis indicate that the impact of gadget use is neither direct nor linear; rather, it is moderated by factors such as duration of use, type of content consumed, digital literacy, parenting style, and the broader social environment. Moderate use accompanied by dialogic parental mediation has the potential to strengthen digital ethical literacy and promote prosocial behavior. Conversely, excessive use without supervision and exposure to negative content are associated with decreased empathy, heightened moral disengagement, and a greater propensity toward antisocial behavior.

Abstract

The This study aims to determine the relationship between materialistic views and the level of belief in revelation in grades V–VI of SDN 5 Teluk Nangka. This topic was chosen because the development of elementary school-aged children's mindsets is starting to be influenced by the social environment, media, and technological advances that have the potential to shape a materialistic orientation and influence their understanding of religious teachings, especially the concept of revelation as a source of divine truth. The study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The research sample was fifth and sixth grade students determined through a total sampling technique. Data were collected using a closed questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, then analyzed using the Pearson correlation test to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between variables. The results of the study showed a significant negative relationship between materialistic views and the level of belief in revelation, where students who have a higher materialistic tendency tend to show a lower level of belief in revelation. This finding suggests that a value orientation that emphasizes material aspects can influence the formation of religious attitudes in elementary school-aged children. Therefore, the results of this study are important as a basis for schools and parents in strengthening character education and spiritual values to balance the intellectual and moral development of students.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of Islamic spirituality on teaching professionalism among students of the Islamic Religious Education Study Program at the Ahmad Dahlan Institute of Probolinggo. The research employs a quantitative approach with an explanatory research design to examine the relationship between Islamic spirituality as the independent variable and teaching professionalism as the dependent variable. The population consists of all students of the Islamic Religious Education Study Program. The sampling technique used is probability sampling through the simple random sampling method. Data collection is conducted using a questionnaire developed based on indicators of Islamic spirituality and teaching professionalism, measured using a Likert scale. The collected data are analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis and simple linear regression to test the research hypothesis. The results show that Islamic spirituality has a positive and significant influence on students’ teaching professionalism. Students with higher levels of spirituality tend to demonstrate stronger commitment to academic responsibilities, greater awareness of professional ethics, and higher readiness to develop pedagogical competencies. These findings indicate that Islamic spirituality functions not only as a personal religious dimension but also as a moral and motivational foundation in shaping the professionalism of prospective educators. Therefore, strengthening spiritual values in higher education, particularly within the Islamic Religious Education Study Program, is essential to develop professional teachers with integrity and strong Islamic character.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the concept of internalizing moral values (adab) according to Al-Ghazali and to identify its implications for the character formation of students in the contemporary era. Background: of this research stems from the importance of adab as a foundational element of education according to Imam Al-Ghazali. In light of the rampant moral degradation observed in students during the modern era, Al-Ghazali's ideas are deemed relevant in reinforcing educational objectives that emphasize not only intellectual abilities but also character formation, spirituality, and noble personality. Method: This research employs a literature review method with content analysis of Al-Ghazali's primary works such as "Ihya’ Ulumuddin" and "Ayyuha al-Walad," as well as pertinent secondary references. A source triangulation technique is used to ensure the validity of the findings through the comparison of various classical and contemporary literature. Results: The study indicates that the internalization of adab can be achieved through habituation, exemplary behavior, purification of the soul (tazkiyatun nafs), self-control, and fostering a respectful relationship between teachers and students. Key moral values, such as sincerity in learning, discipline, respect for teachers, and strengthening of spirituality, are essential in comprehensively shaping students' characters. Al-Ghazali's thoughts also prove relevant as solutions to moral issues in the digital age and globalization. Conclusion: The research emphasizes that character education based on Al-Ghazali's adab is critical in cultivating students who are morally upright, knowledgeable, and emotionally as well as spiritually mature. The internalization of adab is not only vital within the school context but also requires the roles of families and communities to establish a holistic educational ecosystem.

Abstract

This study explores the utilization of flashcard media in teaching letter recognition to Group A children at TK Kanigaran, Probolinggo City. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to understand teachers' and children's experiences, teaching strategies, and responses to flashcard use. Participants included one Group A classroom (n=16s), two classroom teachers, and the school principal; data were collected through eight sessions of participant observation, semi-structured interviews with teachers and the principal, and documentation of teaching materials and children's work. Data analysis followed reduction, display, and verification procedures to generate primary themes. Findings revealed three central themes: (1) interactive teaching strategies that combine play and songs enhanced children's engagement; (2) pictorial and locally contextualized flashcard design facilitated letter-image association; and (3) implementation challenges included limited instructional time, variation in children's abilities, and the need for teacher training. The findings highlight flashcards' role as a supportive tool for early literacy through multimodal repetition and emotional engagement. Trustworthiness was ensured via data triangulation, member checking, and an audit trail. Practical implications include recommendations for inclusive flashcard design, integration of play-based activities, and teacher capacity building. This study contributes empirical evidence to early childhood education literature in Indonesia by emphasizing process, media design, and pedagogical practice within local contexts, and provides a basis for future longitudinal studies measuring early literacy development quantitatively.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of family education contained in Surah Luqman verses 12–19 and to examine its relevance to contemporary educational and psychological theories. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method through thematic analysis of the Qur’anic text, classical and contemporary exegetical works, and academic literature related to family education and moral development. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis to identify the pedagogical structure within Luqman’s counsel to his son. The findings reveal that Surah Luqman verses 12–19 contain a systematic and holistic pedagogical framework for family education that can be mapped into five main pillars a spiritual theological foundation through the inculcation of the values of tawḥid and gratitude, relational education emphasizing respect for parents and proportional obedience, the development of moral awareness and personal responsibility, the habituation of religious practices and the strengthening of emotional regulation through prayer, amr maʿrūf nahy munkar, and patience ṣabr, and the cultivation of social ethics, courtesy, and behavioral moderation. These findings indicate that Luqman’s pedagogy aligns with several contemporary educational theories, including positive psychology, attachment theory, moral development theory, self regulation theory, and social learning theory. Therefore, the educational values embedded in Surah Luqman verses 12–19 demonstrate strong relevance in addressing the challenges of contemporary family education and contribute to the development of an integrative and holistic model of character education.
