Abstract

The advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly transformed language learning, offering innovative solutions for autonomous skill development, particularly in speaking. This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of AI integration, specifically through the CICI AI platform, in self-directed English speaking practice. Employing a descriptive qualitative method with a case study design, data were collected from English Education students at STKIP Taman Siswa Bima through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and observations. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was used as the theoretical framework to examine perceived usefulness and ease of use. Findings indicate that most students perceived AI as beneficial for improving speaking confidence (M = 3.53) and motivation (M = 3.47), with overall ease of use rated highly (M = 4.0). Despite these positive perceptions, students reported several challenges, including unstable internet access (87%), difficulty in pronunciation recognition (80%), and limited contextual feedback. The study concludes that while AI facilitates flexible and personalized speaking practice, its effectiveness depends on technical stability and user readiness. These insights highlight the importance of developing AI tools that are not only user-friendly but also responsive to learners’ linguistic diversity and emotional engagement in language learning.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a crucial aspect of English language proficiency, yet many students struggle to understand and use vocabulary accurately. Visual media such as busy pictures are believed to support early childhood vocabulary development through visual stimulation and interactive engagement. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of using busy pictures in improving vocabulary mastery among Group B students at PAUD Zalfa Naqiyya Samarinda. This research employed a quantitative method, involving a population of 32 students from Group B during the 2023/2024 academic year, with a sample of 13 students. The findings revealed that the average pretest score before treatment was 21.31, while the average post-test score after the use of busy pictures increased to 54. This represents a 32.69% improvement. The results indicate that busy pictures are an effective medium for enhancing students’ vocabulary mastery. Furthermore, the hypothesis testing showed that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, confirming the positive impact of busy picture media on vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract

In today’s rapidly evolving academic and technological environment, English learners are expected not only to master language skills but also to think critically and communicate effectively. However, many EFL instructional practices still focus heavily on memorization, leaving students underprepared for real-world communication demands. To address this gap, alternative teaching strategies that promote both reasoning and speaking performance are needed. This study investigates the impact of structured debate instruction on the speaking and critical thinking skills of EFL undergraduate students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur. Using a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design, 26 fourth-semester English education students participated in a five-meeting intervention. Their performances were assessed using rubrics adapted from the IELTS Speaking Band Descriptors and the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal framework. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, paired samples t-tests. The results showed significant improvement in both speaking and critical thinking skills (p .001). Among the rubric indicators, inference and fluency showed the highest post-test scores, while deduction and grammatical accuracy showed the lowest. These findings suggest that debate can be an effective pedagogical tool for enhancing spontaneous reasoning and communicative clarity in EFL settings, while also highlighting areas that may require additional support.

Abstract

Abstract

Education must also keep pace with the times. In the development of human life, technology plays a crucial supporting role, as it has become immensely beneficial to humanity. This training will use an interactive workshop approach that combines theory, practice, and mentorship. From the community service activities conducted, it can be concluded that the training on creating AI-based teaching modules and learning media for teachers has yielded effective results, as all targets were successfully met. This initiative also received a highly positive response from the participating teachers, evident from their enthusiasm and the widespread adoption of AI to support learning in the technology implementation phase. Through this training, teachers have also been greatly assisted in improving efficiency, both in administrative tasks and in developing learning media.

Abstract

Education plays a central role in shaping the character and civilization of a dignified nation. In Indonesia, the role of elementary schools is crucial as the foundational stage in forming students' identity and character. One of the key components of the Merdeka Belajar (Freedom to Learn) policy is strengthening the Profil Pelajar Pancasila (Pancasila Student Profile). Through this initiative, the values embedded in the Pancasila Student Profile—such as mutual cooperation (gotong royong), diversity (kebinekaan), independence (kemandirian), and critical thinking—are successfully introduced and cultivated in students through hands-on and reflective activities. This effort also demonstrates that even abroad, Pancasila-based character education can still be instilled and developed through adaptive and collaborative learning.

Abstract

Elementary education serves as a crucial foundation in shaping cognitive abilities, comprehension, and the capacity to express ideas both in written and spoken forms. Among the fundamental competencies that need to be instilled early on are reading and writing skills, which are integral components of literacy. This training program is designed to enhance teachers' competencies in developing students' literacy skills through a participatory training approach and intensive mentoring. The training is conducted in the form of a three-day interactive workshop, covering effective reading strategies, creative writing techniques, and the use of both digital and conventional literacy media. The program also emphasizes the importance of fostering a literate and collaborative learning environment, involving teachers, students, and parents in literacy-based learning activities. Success is measured by increased student participation in reading and writing activities, the availability of contextual supplementary reading materials, and the establishment of a simple yet sustainable literacy culture in the classroom. Through this initiative, the goal is to create a strong foundation for lifelong learning and critical thinking among young learners.

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between students’ perceptions of Kahoot, their competitiveness, and academic performance in English learning. The research involved 5 purposively selected 8th grade students from a total of 16 students at a private school in Samarinda. Selection was based on students with the highest academic scores in English. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase thematic analysis. The results revealed that Kahoot was perceived as fun and motivating, with game-like features promoting healthy competition. Students reported academic improvements, particularly in vocabulary and grammar. However, issues such as internet instability and time constraints emerged. Overall, Kahoot enhanced engagement, fostered competition, and supported academic performance in EFL contexts.
