Abstract

This research explores the application of the Balinese philosophy of Menyama Braya or brotherhood in promoting inclusive education in a primary bilingual school in North Bali. Grounded in theories of multiculturalism and inclusivity, the study emphasizes the importance of acceptance, empathy, and cooperation among students from diverse backgrounds. Employing a phenomenological approach, data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, discussions, and document analysis. The findings indicate that the integration of Menyama Braya principles fosters a cooperative learning environment where students, including those with special needs, engage meaningfully with their peers. This practice not only enhances tolerance and empathy but also supports the creation of culturally responsive educational spaces. Recommendations include incorporating Menyama Braya values into teacher education curricula to cultivate inclusive practices that celebrate diversity and ensure equitable access to quality education for all students. By embedding these local values into modern educational methodologies, schools can develop compassionate learning environments that embrace differences while promoting social harmony.

Abstract

Objective: To enhance nurses' global competitiveness, this study evaluates a hybrid TOEFL preparation program for nursing students at STIKES Banyuwangi. Using the Context, Input, Process, Product (CIPP) model, the evaluation assesses program components to identify effectiveness, relevance, and areas for improvement. Method: This study employed a mixed-methods approach involving 86 nursing students and four academic staff. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and documentation and then analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Results: The program significantly improved students’ average TOEFL scores, particularly in reading and listening. Context evaluation confirmed the program's relevance and students' appreciation of the hybrid format's flexibility. However, input analysis revealed a lack of nursing-specific content, and process evaluation showed inconsistent online engagement and inadequate feedback. Despite these issues, the program prepared most students to achieve their academic and professional goals. Novelty:This study addresses a crucial research gap by evaluating a hybrid TOEFL preparation program for nursing students. Unlike previous research that focused on English language learners in general and used an offline format, this study offers unique insights into the needs, motivations, and challenges of nursing students in a hybrid model. Furthermore, the comprehensive CIPP model provides a holistic and in-depth evaluation of all program stages. The model explicitly articulates how context evaluation validates program relevance, while Input and Process analyses accurately pinpoint weaknesses, such as a lack of nursing-specific content and inadequate online feedback. Product evaluation quantitatively links these deficiencies to learning outcomes, providing a clear roadmap for targeted, evidence-based program improvement.

Abstract

Abstract Experiential learning through teaching assistance programs plays a vital role in the professional development of prospective teachers, especially within Islamic higher education contexts. However, few evaluation frameworks comprehensively explore the relationships among program components and their direct effects on educational outcomes. This study employs the Logic Model framework to systematically analyze the Teaching Assistance Program at the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, UIN Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq Jember, during the 2024–2025 academic year. By mapping inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes, and long-term impacts, the study offers an integrated evaluation of how teaching assistance fosters professional competencies and instructional quality development. Utilizing a qualitative approach, including semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and document analysis, with participation from 114 sixth-semester students across nine study programs, the research uncovers the critical influence of structured mentorship and contextual adaptation across disciplines. It also reveals challenges such as inconsistent supervision and lack of standardized practices. This study contributes to advancing program evaluation methodologies in Islamic teacher education by demonstrating the utility of the Logic Model to reveal program dynamics and inform strategic enhancement of teaching assistance frameworks. The findings carry significant implications for promoting equitable, coherent, and sustainable teacher preparation programs within diverse institutional environments.   Abstrak Pembelajaran berbasis pengalaman melalui program bantuan pengajaran memegang peranan penting dalam pengembangan profesional calon guru, khususnya dalam konteks pendidikan tinggi Islam. Abstract

Scaffolding in learning has been argued to facilitate the students’ progress. As the educational paradigm inevitably shifts into online modes, strategies for scaffolding provision need to be adjusted. This study aimed to understand the nature of the online learning environment and explore the aspects, types, and methods of scaffolding provision in online learning contexts by adopting George's (2008) research method into a qualitative design. The data were collected from experts' opinions and previous studies, as published in reputable international journals, using Education Resources Information Center (https://eric.ed.gov/), Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com), and Research Gate (https://www.researchgate.net) as the databases. The research result is presented in an informal method. The review reveals that critical aspects of scaffolding are contingency, fading, and transfer of responsibility, which are applicable in synchronous and asynchronous learning with the support provided by peers, teachers, or technology through static or dynamic interaction. Based on its purpose, the four types of scaffolding are procedural, conceptual, metacognitive, and strategic, which can be performed strategically in online contexts through orientation to the course structure, access to resource and tools, critical thinking development, guidance to problem-solving, provisions of hints, sufficient examples, probing questions, and providing constructive feedback. These findings imply the importance of implementing scaffolding strategies in online learning contexts, although further studies need to be conducted to provide more comprehensive scaffolding models.

Abstract

Confidence and spontaneity are often treated as expected outcomes of EFL speaking programs, yet program evaluations rarely explain how these outcomes are produced, sustained, or limited by classroom processes. Addressing this gap, this study evaluated a Basic Speaking Class through an outcome-focused logic evaluation framework to examine how program inputs, communicative activities, classroom conditions, and immediate outcomes shaped students’ oral development. This qualitative evaluative case study involved 12 participants: 10 students, one speaking lecturer, and one program coordinator. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observation with field notes, and program documents, and were analyzed thematically using the logic framework as an analytical lens. The findings show that communicative tasks such as games, role plays, discussions, and problem-solving activities, when supported by peer interaction and responsive feedback, created a less threatening space for students to take risks, speak more willingly, and rely less on memorized scripts. However, these gains were context-dependent. Students’ confidence and spontaneity were strongest in low-stakes classroom interaction but weakened in formal academic speaking situations, particularly when vocabulary recycling, task progression, and tutor scaffolding were insufficient. The study contributes to EFL speaking program evaluation by showing that confidence and spontaneity are not automatic indicators of program success, but developmental and fragile outcomes shaped by the alignment between task design, classroom support, and transfer-oriented speaking practice.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the types and functions of code-switching used by Agatha Chelsea in the Suara Berkelas video podcast. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were obtained from Agatha Chelsea’s utterances during the podcasts. Data collection was conducted through non-participant observation and documentation techniques, namely by watching and transcribing the video podcast, identifying utterances containing code-switching, and classifying and analysing them according to Poplack’s (1980) theory of types of code-switching and Gumperz’s (1982) theory of functions of code-switching. The results of this study revealed 413 instances of code-switching, comprising 35 instances of tag-switching, 47 instances of inter-sentential switching, and 413 instances of intra-sentential switching. The data showed that intra-sentential switching was the most frequent type of code-switching used by Agatha Chelsea during the podcasts. In addition, 288 functions of code-switching were identified, comprising 25 instances of quotation, 2 instances of addressee specification, 18 instances of interjection, 1 instance of reiteration, 27 instances of message qualification, and 215 instances of personalization vs. objectivization. The most dominant function was personalization vs objectivization, indicating that Agatha Chelsea tends to code-switch to express personal experience and feelings, convey opinions, and provide factual information.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the challenges faced by teachers in teaching basic English literacy through the Montessori method in multicultural and inclusive classroom. A qualitative approach with a case study design was used in this study. This research was conducted at Singaraja Montessori School and in the Octopus class. Two teachers who teach in the Octopus class were participants in this study. Research data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, which were then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. Based on data obtained from two purposively selected teachers who were directly responsible for teaching basic English literacy in the Octopus class, the findings of this study indicate three challenges faced by teachers when teaching basic English literacy through the Montessori method. First, the challenge of differences in student literacy levels because the Octopus class consists of grades 1-3 and a diverse student body. Second, the challenge of accommodating students with special needs, especially in providing individual support, simple instructions, and visual aids while maintaining a conducive classroom environment. Third, the difficulty in developing flexible lesson guides to respond to the various differences that exist in students. This research shows that teaching basic English literacy through the Montessori method in multicultural and inclusive classroom requires continuous observation, flexible planning, and balanced support to ensure all students can participate without exception and according to their individual abilities.

Abstract

Listening skills are one of the most challenging aspects in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) because they require students to comprehend spoken input, capture meaning, and process it in real time. However, limited exposure, monotonous learning resources, and less engaging media often become obstacles for students. This study aims to analyze the significant effect of using animated movie clips as a learning medium on the listening skills of EFL students. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with a post-test only control group design. The population of this study consisted of eleventh-grade students, and purposive sampling was used to select the research participants. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicate that the mean score of the experimental group (82.05) was higher than that of the control group (76.82). The hypothesis testing using a t-test revealed a significant difference after the use of animated movie clips as a learning medium in students’ listening skills. In addition, the questionnaire administered to the experimental group showed that most students responded positively to the use of animated movie clips, as they were perceived to be engaging, motivating, and helpful in understanding listening materials. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of animated movie clips has a significant effect on the listening skills of EFL students. The implications of this study suggest that teachers should integrate dynamic and authentic audio-visual media into the learning process to enhance listening comprehension and create a more interactive learning environment.
