Abstract

Jerowaru sub-district is one of 21 sub-districts in East Lombok district. Many people raise buffaloes to fulfill their need for food of animal origin. However, the business is still hampered by diseases caused by worm infestation, which is economically detrimental. This study aimed to obtain data on the prevalence of helminthiasis in buffaloes and identify the types of worms that infest the animals. Fecal samples were collected from buffaloes kept in smallholder farms in several villages in the Jerowaru sub-district. Examination and identification of samples were conducted at the Microbiology and Biotechnology laboratory of the Faculty of Animal Science, University of Mataram, and the Banyumulek Animal Health laboratory. The results show that the prevalence of helminthiasis in buffaloes kept in smallholder farms in the Jerowaru subdistrict was 14.60%. The types of parasites infecting buffaloes consisted of Eimeria (13.48%) and Toxocara (1.12%). Although parasite infection intensity is categorized as mild, it is necessary to pay attention to the cleanliness of cattle pens, especially during the rainy season, so they are not wet and humid.

Abstract

Differences in meat tenderness between male and female animals are influenced by physiological and hormonal factors that affect muscle composition and connective tissue development. Understanding the effect of sex on meat tenderness is important for improving the quality of local goat breeds such as the Kacang goat, which is commonly raised under traditional semi-intensive systems. This study analyzed and compared the tenderness profile of meat from one-year-old male and female Kacang goats reared semi-intensively. Meat samples from the loin and shank of three male and three female goats were collected and tested using the Warner–Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF) method, and data were analyzed using an independent t-test to determine differences in tenderness between muscle types and sexes. The results showed a significant difference in male goats, with shank meat being tougher than loin meat, while in female goats, tenderness between both cuts was relatively uniform. These variations are attributed to physiological and hormonal differences, particularly higher testosterone levels in males that increase connective tissue density in more active muscles. In conclusion, sex significantly influences the tenderness of Kacang goat meat, with females producing meat of more consistent tenderness across different cuts, whereas males exhibit greater variation. The findings contribute to a better understanding of sex-related factors affecting meat quality and provide a scientific basis for improving goat meat production and management practices.

Abstract

Abstract

Siamese catfish (Pangasius hypophthalamus) is one of the most economically importantfreshwater commodities in Indonesian aquaculture. A major challenge during the growth-out phase, is the limited ability to digest plant-based diets due to high cellulose and crude fiber content, which reduce feed digestibility. Supplementation of cellulase in feed has been proposed as a strategy to improve nutrient utilization. Therefore the present study investigated the effect of dietary celulase supplementation on feed digestibility and growth performance in Seamese catfish. Juvenile catfish with an average initial length of 6cm were reared for 30 days in floating net in a cement pond. A complete reandomized design was employed with four treatments, two control, and four replciates. Treatments included cellulase derived from mivrobes sources T1 = Plant feed + WT, T2 = Plant feed + (WT + SKIK), T3 = Plant feed + Mutant, T4 = Plant feed + (mutant + SKIK). The control consisted of C1 = Commercial feed and C2 = Plant-based feed without enzyme supplementation. The results showed that C1 showed the best results for the growth of fish. However, T2, T3 and T4 showed the best results when compared to C2 and T1 which used 100% vegetable protein feed. Therefore, it can be concluded that the addition of cellulase enzymes to the feed has an effect on increasing the growth of Siamese catfish.

Abstract

Chitosan is one of the biopolymers that has recently been developed in the medical field. Chitosan is biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic, so it is safe for the human body. This study aimed to identify the characteristics of chitosan isolated from pearl oyster shells. Chitosan is obtained through three stages: deproteination, demineralization, and deacetylation. Characterization of chitosan is done physically and chemically including organoleptic test, yield calculation in each step of isolation, FTIR, and XRD. Isolated chitosan identified deacetylation degree and functional group with FTIR. While the crystal structure was determined using XRD. The results showed that chitosan powder has a beige color with a final yield of 7,06%. The characterization of FTIR shows that synthesized pearl oyster shells have successfully formed chitosan compounds with a deacetylation degree of 81,50%. Another characteristic is the crystal structure obtained; chitosan has orthorhombic unit cells with a degree of chitosan crystallinity of 36,94%. Based on the result, chitosan has met several standards in medical applications as a biomaterial.

Abstract

Islam in Indonesia has received significant academic attention. One important finding is the categorization of beliefs and behaviors of Muslims, which proves the plurality of Islam. However, these categorizations—such as santri-abangan-priayi, traditionalist-modernist, political-cultural, fundamentalist-liberal, great tradition-little tradition, and global-local—must be critically approached. The most appropriate categorization is one that is closer to reality. The santri-abangan-priayi categorization developed in the 1960s demonstrates Javanese centrism in the study of Indonesian Islam and shows a static, closed system that should be carefully used to refer to Muslims outside of Java and in the present era. The traditionalist-modernist category actually carries modernization assumptions and therefore should not be viewed statically. The differentiation of political-cultural is also difficult to apply in many cases, such as when an Islamic group is involved in both political and cultural activities simultaneously. Similarly, the terms great tradition-little tradition to refer to Sharia Islam and Sufi Islam are less relevant in cases where specific Islamic groups practice both Sharia and Sufism simultaneously, besides the fact that the terms big and small assume one pattern is more valuable than others religious patterns. The global and local perspectives in understanding the diversity of Islam can avoid overly general labeling, but it is still difficult to determine which aspects are global and which are local and challenging to measure religious change accurately. Even more challenging in understanding the plurality of Islam is how to determine a religious act and what is not religious (secular).

Abstract

Religion plays a crucial role in shaping social and individual life, even in secular states. In societies with a strong religious presence, such as Indonesia, religious institutions, figures, and symbols influence social interactions and national identity. However, religion presents a paradox: while it promotes peace and social cohesion, it has also been a catalyst for conflict and violence. This dual nature of religion raises essential questions about the conditions under which religion fosters integration versus when it becomes a source of division. This paper explores the complex relationship between religion, conflict, and social integration. It examines historical and contemporary cases where religion has both united and divided communities, highlighting the socio-political and ideological factors involved. The study also considers potential strategies for reducing religious conflict and fostering peaceful coexistence in the future.
