Abstract

The increasing consumption of local clam shells which contain high nutritional value in society has resulted in an increase in waste sea shells in areas around the coast of Bengkulu Province. The high calcium content in lokan clam shells attracts researchers to study the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy resin composites reinforced lokan clam shell powder. This research aims to investigate the effect of variations in the volume fraction of lokan clam shell powder and the mold loading on the physical and mechanical properties of composites reinforced lokan clam shell powder. The process of manufacturing shell powder is carried out by heating at a temperature of 900oC for 6 hours. Variations in the volume fraction of lokan clam shell powder consist of 30, 50, 70%. Meanwhile, the mold loading was varied by 0, 500 N, and 1 kN. The manufacturing process uses hand lay-up techniques. Physical and mechanical tests on composites include water absorption tests, density, tensile tests and impact tests. The results of the research show that the powder volume fraction and mold loading influence the physical and mechanical properties of composites reinforced lokan clam shell powder. The best physical properties of composite were obtained at a powder volume fraction of 70% and a mold loading of 1 kN, namely with a density of 1.43 g/cm3. The best mechanical properties of composite were obtained at a volume fraction of 30% and a mold loading of 1 kN, namely with a tensile strength of 33.2 MPa and an impact toughness of 366.8 kJ/m2.

Abstract

Introduction/Main Objective: Labor force participation is crucial for improving household economic conditions. Theoretically, labor force participation in the job market can be influenced by several factors, including poverty levels. Documentation from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of Jambi Province indicates that labor force participation rates vary across districts and cities in the province. This study aims to estimate the impact of poverty levels on labor force participation rates in Jambi Province. In this analysis, labor force participation is categorized into male and female labor force participation rates. Research Methodology: This study employs panel data from districts and cities during the 2018–2023 period. All data are sourced from published reports by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of Jambi Province. To estimate the relationship between variables, the study utilizes panel regression analysis with a fixed-effects approach. Findings/Results: The study demonstrates that poverty levels have a positive and significant impact on male and female labor force participation rates. The higher the poverty level, the higher the male and female labor force participation in the job market. Conversely, lower poverty levels are associated with lower labor force participation rates. Conclusion/Recommendations: Labor force participation in the job market is significantly determined by poverty levels. In other words, the challenges faced by households in meeting their basic needs drive increased participation in the job market. Therefore, it is recommended that district and city governments in Jambi Province enhance labor force participation by providing training and skills development programs, particularly for impoverished groups.

Abstract

Abstract

Mangrove forest ecosystem is one of coastal ecosystem having significant roles as habitat for diverse organisms, as barrier ofseawater intrusion, sediment trap, protection to the shore from abrasion and as nutrient supplier in form of detritus to othercoastal ecosystems i.e. seagrass beds and coral reefs. However, mangrove has experienced degradation caused by natural andanthropogenic factors. One effort to recover the mangrove’s function is by rehabilitating this ecosystem through controllingits total organic matter and the soil acidity (pH). Therefore, it is urgent to conduct a study in order to know the relationshipbetween mangrove growth and the total organic matter and pH. The study was conducted May 2014. The study area was locatedin Mampie, Wonomulyo Sub-District, Polewali Mandar Regency. The benefit gained from this study was giving information ondissolved organic matter related to the mangrove rehabilitation. Method used was field survey by determining three observationstations with different environmental condition. Data were presented as tables and pictures. Results of this study indicated thatincreasing of mangrove density and coverage was followed by the increasing of total organic matter percentage within sedimentat station II. Whereas, the higher the acidity, the lower the content of the total organic matter within sediment was found inStation I. In contrast, the organic matter within sediment was high when the acidity value decrease was observed at Station III.Keywords: Vegetation structure, mangrove, environmental factors, Dissolved Organic Matter, pH.

Abstract

Dugong is the only herbivory mammals in the sea and mainly feed on seagrasses. Population of dugong tends to decrease in all ofits range as an impact from hunting, fishing activities and habitat degradation. In South Sulawesi-Indonesia, recent informationabout dugong population is unknown due to limited observation. Last dugong existence reported from Barranglompo Island in1991. This research aim to reveal the existence of dugong in Spermonde Archipelago. Result of this study showed from 1992to 2017, only 6 individu of dugong were observed. In 2006, one live dugong accidentally found roaming near Samalona Island. This encounter was successfully recorded by video camera. Four years later, one dead dugong found trapped in fishing net nearLantangpeo village, Tanakeke Island and sold to local fishermen for consumed. In 2014, one dugong grazing track was alsofound in Tanakeke Island near Balandatu Village. Information from 2016, reported two dugongs in seagrass meadow aroundPuntondo and Laikang Bay. Last report on 31 January 2017, showedone decomposed body from young dugong stranded inBarranglompo Island. The death cause remaining unknown. From interview with some witnesses and local fishermen, dugongaccidentaly found trapped, drown and dead in fishing net that set up around seagrass meadow. Abstract

The distribution of macroalgae in the waters is influenced by various environmental factors ranging from anthropogenic pressures such as the activities of local communities and tourists to the Physico-chemical effects of the waters. This study aims to examine the effect of environmental parameters on the distribution of macroalgae and to map the spatial distribution of macroalgae on Lae-lae Island and Gusung Lae-lae Caddi. Data collection for macroalgae was carried out using a 1 × 1 m transect method and environmental parameters were surveyed using in situ measurements and further analysis in the laboratory. The status and diversity of macroalgae were calculated using ecological indices, distribution of macroalgae using Mapping Techniques, and the interrelationships between parameters were tested using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The results showed that the largest macroalgae cover was found in Gusung Lae-Lae Caddi by 55% with the average distribution of macroalgae cover respectively; Lae-laen Island East Station 9%, Lae-lae Island West Station 36%, Gusung Lae-lae Caddi East Station 21%, and Gusung Lae-lae Cadii West Station 55%. The high macroalgae cover in Gusung Lae-Lae Caddi is influenced by nutrients and the low level of turbidity. Based on the calculation of the ecological index, it was found that the ecological status was dominated by the late-successional group.

Abstract

Coral reefs are the most diverse and complex underwater ecosystems in terms of biodiversity, including megabenthic fauna. Megabenthos is organism with a size of more than 1 cm that lives on the bottom/substrate of waters which includes attached, crawling and burrowing biota on the seabed. The research was conducted using the Line Intercept Transect and Benthos Belt Transect methods. The results of the study of coral conditions showed the percentage of live coral cover with conditions from bad to very good. The bad category was found in the west (24.56%) and south of the island (20.55%). The moderate category was found in the northwest (45.35%) and southwest of the island (30.08%) while the very good category was found in the north (80.68%) and south of the island (75.92%). The megabenthos found at the study site were 26 species from 10 megabenthos classes with densities in each category of coral conditions ranging from 12.11 to 23.51 individual/m². The highest density was found in moderate coral conditions dominated by Polycarpa aurata species and the lowest in very good coral conditions with the highest number of species found in poor coral conditions with 21 species and the lowest in very good conditions with 11 species. The species diversity (H') of megabenthos at the study site is in the low category. The high number of megabenthic species was associated with high dead coral and algae cover while high megabenthic density was associated with high other and abiotic cover in the form of sand substrate.

Abstract

Seaweed cultivation is an alternative community livelihood that potentially helping to reduce pressure on coral reefs in the area of Raja Ampat Archipelago. This study was aimed to conduct an oceanographic analysis of the waters of Meosbekwan Island (Raja Ampat Regency) for the suitability of seaweed cultivation. Oceanographic data collection was carried out at three points (M1, M2, and M3) on the western side of Meosbekwan Island. Analysis of suitability for aquaculture was initiated with an analysis of key parameters, i.e., depth, protection and shipping traffic. The suitability analysis was followed by an analysis of the oceanographic parameters of the waters by weighting them using a ranking system. Furthermore, the final stage of suitability analysis was to evaluate the feasibility level of seaweed cultivation. The results showed that the depth of the waters on the western side of Meosbekwan Island ranged from 1.3 m – 5.8 m with an average depth of 1.5 m in the south (M1), 2.2 m in the middle (M2), and 3.9 m to the north (M3). Wave height during the study ranged from 0.1 – 0.3 m with an average value of 0.25 m at all points. The velocity of the water currents ranged from 0.08 – 0.25 m/s. The salinity of the waters was relatively homogeneous (30 - 31 o/oo). Water temperature also has small and relatively homogeneous variations with a range of 30 - 31˚C. The brightness of the waters ranged from 2.5 – 3.5 m. The bottom of the waters on the west side of Meosbekwan Island generally consists of coarse sand, rubble, and seagrass vegetation Enhalus acoroides and Cymodocea sp. In general, the oceanographic conditions of the waters are suitable for the life and growth of seaweed. The results of the location suitability evaluation indicated that the waters on the western side of Meosbekwan Island were technically feasible to serve as a location for seaweed cultivation.
