Abstract

This study investigates teachers’ perceptions on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in teaching English at State High School 2 Mataram or SMAN 2 Mataram. The research questions concern about what are the teachers’ perceptions of PBL, the challenges faced by English teachers in implementing PBL, and how teachers overcome the challenges teaching English. The researcher used questionnaire, interview, and document analysis to collect the data. The data was analyzed using three steps of qualitative data analysis; data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings suggest that teachers perceive PBL as an effective model for teaching English, fostering collaboration, critical thinking, and argumentation among students. However, they face challenges such as varying student comprehension levels and reliance on the internet for quick solutions. To overcome these challenges, teachers adopt approaches such as guiding students with low comprehension levels patiently and emphasizing the importance of in-depth research to deter reliance on instant internet solutions. The study contributes to the field of English language teaching by providing insights into the challenges and solutions related to PBL implementation.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the effectiveness of Grammarly feedback on students' progress in argumentative writing. Grammarly is an online automated writing evaluation tool that focuses on giving feedback on the language used in any type of writing. The tool was used in argumentative writing courses for 34 third-semester students at a state university in Mataram. The research used a descriptive qualitative method to collect data on the students' perceptions. The data was collected using validated questionnaires with a four-point Likert scale and supported by interviews. The findings show that students generally had positive perceptions of Grammarly. They found it effective for identifying and correcting errors in their writing, especially in grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. They considered the correctness feature to be the most helpful. Additionally, they believed that using Grammarly improved their motivation and grammatical competence in argumentative writing. However, some participants had negative perceptions of Grammarly's weaknesses, particularly in providing feedback on the arrangement of thesis statements, counter-arguments, and the use of evidence in argumentative writing.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of using English subtitles from Western child-friendly movies on students' English vocabulary. This research was experimental research and implemented a pre-test post-test group design. The sample of thsi research was the students from 9th grade students of SMP 1 Praya which consisted of 50 students. This research used observation and test as the research instruments. The result of this research showed that the independent sample t-test revealed a significance (2-tailed) value of 0.000. Since this value is less than the standard threshold of 0.05, it indicates that the difference between the mean scores of the control and experimental classes is statistically significant. This finding confirms that the observed variation in scores is unlikely to have occurred by random chance. Therefore, it can be concluded that the intervention applied to the experimental class using English subtitles in Western child-friendly movies had a substantial and measurable impact on improving students’ vocabulary proficiency compared to the traditional teaching methods employed in the control class. These findings highlight the effectiveness of using English subtitles in Western child-friendly movies as a teaching tool for improving vocabulary. The experimental class's significant improvement compared to the control class's limited progress underscores the potential of innovative methods over traditional teaching approaches in enhancing students’ English vocabulary proficiency.

Abstract

This study aims to investigates the English language needs of Management Study Program students at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Mataram, emphasizing the importance of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). As globalization intensifies, proficiency in English tailored to students’ academic and professional fields becomes critical. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected from 35 third-semester students through questionnaires and interviews, focusing on their learning needs, goals, and preferred content. Analysis revealed that speaking skills are prioritized by students to enhance their future career prospects, while there is a strong demand for English materials directly related to management contexts. The findings highlight that students require materials that are not only easy to understand but also practically applicable to their future workplaces. This study underscores the need for lecturers to develop specialized English teaching materials that align with students' professional goals and specific disciplines. It also recommends that English teaching at the university level move beyond general proficiency to incorporate industry-relevant language skills. Finally, the study suggests future research involve larger sample sizes to further enrich understanding and curriculum development. The integration of ESP principles into English teaching is essential for preparing graduates who are competent, confident, and ready for the demands of their professions.

Abstract

This qualitative descriptive study investigates the implementation of the scientific approach in English language teaching at SMAN 1 Batukliang during the 2024/2025 academic year, with a particular focus on instructional practices and the challenges encountered by teachers. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis involving English teachers from Grades X, XI, and XII. Findings reveal that all participating teachers actively applied the five stages of the scientific approach—observing, questioning, experimenting, associating, and communicating—demonstrating notable creativity in adapting activities to suit their students’ needs. However, consistent challenges emerged across all stages, primarily stemming from students’ limited English proficiency, including insufficient vocabulary, weak grammatical competence, and difficulties in comprehension and oral expression. Additional obstacles included classroom management issues, unequal student participation in group work, and the need for extensive scaffolding and repetition. Despite these hurdles, teachers employed context-sensitive strategies—such as peer monitoring, targeted vocabulary reinforcement, and code-switching—to mitigate barriers and sustain engagement. The study underscores the critical role of teacher agency and pedagogical creativity in navigating the complexities of student-centered learning under Curriculum 2013. It also highlights the necessity of targeted professional development and contextualized support to enhance the effective implementation of the scientific approach in English classrooms.

Abstract

The study explores the challenges faced by seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Labuapi when speaking English. The research used a qualitative methodology, including classroom observations, questionnaires, and interviews with students and teachers. The findings revealed that students face both linguistic and non-linguistic difficulties in speaking. Linguistic problems include a lack of grammatical knowledge, poor pronunciation due to the regional Sasak accent, and a small vocabulary. Non-linguistic difficulties include difficulty with students' shyness, anxiety, and fear of making mistakes. Then, the use of mother tongue languages, low student engagement, and negative peer interactions exacerbate these issues. These encountered difficulties are influenced by three main factors, including linguistic or language, psychological, and environmental and social factors. The study suggests that addressing these difficulties requires a comprehensive strategy to create an engaging English learning environment. The findings highlight the need for a more effective approach to improve students' English language skills.
