Abstract

In religious university environments, the development of English-speaking skills among non-English major students presents unique psychological and contextual challenges. Ideally, students should be able to integrate language mastery with their religious and academic identity to face global demands. However, empirical findings reveal that many students experience high anxiety, lack of confidence, and inconsistent institutional support, particularly in the informal learning environment of the Ma’had program. Through a qualitative inquiry involving in-depth interviews, this study identifies four major themes: (1) Psychological Barriers in Speaking English, (2) Contextual Gaps between Academic Programs and Dormitory Initiatives, (3) Adaptive and Maladaptive Coping Strategies, and (4) Students' Aspirations for Effective English Learning Environments. The research highlights that although formal academic programs provide structured learning, the informal settings often lack systematic reinforcement, leading to fragmented experiences in language acquisition. Students express a strong need for a more integrated, empathetic, and motivational approach in both academic and dormitory settings. This study contributes to the theoretical understanding of English learning in faith-based institutions and offers practical implications for curriculum designers, language instructors, and religious educational policymakers aiming to bridge the psychological and contextual gaps. The findings advocate for the design of supportive programs that not only build linguistic competence but also align with students’ religious values and future aspirations, fostering a more holistic development of English proficiency in faith-driven academic environments.

Abstract

Intensive common carp (Cyprinus carpio) farming is prone to bacterial infections such as Aeromonas hydrophila, and while antibiotics are effective, their overuse raises concerns about resistance and environmental impact. This study aimed to identify the fractions of butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea) extract through phytochemical tests, UV-Vis, and FTIR spectrophotometry, and evaluate their immunostimulant potential by assessing total leukocyte counts in common carp (C. carpio). The research was conducted from December 2024 to February 2025 at the Fish Disease and Health Laboratory, Brawijaya University. Fifty Majalaya strain common carp were divided into treatment and control groups, receiving 25 ppm extract fractions. Extraction was performed using ethanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane, followed by fractionation via thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Leukocyte count analysis was conducted from day 0 to day 3 using microscopy. Results showed that 96% yielded the highest extract recovery (22.16%), while ethyl acetate contained the best bioactive compounds. The optimal TLC eluent was chloroform: methanol (9:1), producing distinct light green and pink spots. Fraction 5 showed the highest leukocyte increase from day 0 (0.73 × 10⁴ cells/mm³) to day 2 (0.29 × 10⁴ cells/mm³) and the lowest decrease on day 3 (0.13 × 10⁴ cells/mm³). UV-Vis spectrophotometry revealed a peak at 659 nm, indicating the presence of phenolics, flavonoids, and alkaloids. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of key functional groups, including O-H, C-H, C≡N, C=O, and C=C. These findings suggest fractionated butterfly pea flower extract as a promising natural immunostimulant for sustainable aquaculture.

Abstract

Aging impacts musculoskeletal function declines, such as joint stiffness and muscle pain, which can trigger geriatric emergencies like falls and immobilization. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of stretching-based group activity therapy in reducing pain and improving mortality in the elderly. The design used was a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test without a control group, involving 47 elderly at the Pelayanan Sosial Tresna Werdha Magetan (Healthcare and Rehabilitation Unit). The intervention was conducted in one 40-minute, consisting of statistical and dynamic stretching of several body parts. Evaluation was conducted using a Visual Analog Scale. Results showed a significant reduction in pain (median Visual Analog Scale from 6–8 to 2–3) and active participation by all participants. The discussion confirmed that group activity therapy stretching is effective as a non-pharmacological intervention for preventing chronic pain and the risk of musculoskeletal emergencies in the elderly, and provides psychosocial benefits through group interaction.

Abstract

Fraction is the result of fractionation of the process of separating compounds based on the polarity properties of the solvent. Thin layer chromatography is the first step in fractionation analysis to determine the eluent that can produce guava leaf fractions. The guava leaf fraction contains chemical compounds that play a role in improving the immune system. Guava leaves contain flavonoid compounds, especially quercetin. The effort made to find out the content of guava leaves is to analyze further. Some analyses to determine the content of active compounds, especially in guava leaf fractions, are using phytochemical tests, UV-VIS spectrophotometry, and GC-MS. The combination of these three methods can obtain comprehensive information about the content of chemical compounds in plants, from the identification of compound groups to the characteristics of specific compounds. Phytochemical analysis is an initial analytical method carried out to examine the content of chemical compounds in medicinal plants. Ultra Violet-Visble (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer is one of the chemical analysis methods to determine the composition of a sample, both quantitatively and qualitatively, based on the interaction between matter and light. The Gas Cromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) method is a method of separating samples using gas chromatography while analyzing the compounds using mass spectroscopy. The purpose of this study is to analyze the active compounds contained in the guava leaf fraction. This research uses a qualitative method by collecting data by observation and literature study.  The results showed that the results of the analysis of guava leaf fractions using phytochemical tests, UV-VIS spectrophotometers, and GC-MS, showed that the fraction contained terpenoid and flavonoid group compounds.

Abstract

Aeromonas hydrophila is a pathogenic bacterium responsible for significant losses in freshwater aquaculture. In response to the growing issue of antibiotic resistance, this study examined the antibacterial activity of the ethyl acetate fraction of butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea) against A. hydrophila in vitro. Extraction was performed using ethyl acetate, followed by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and column chromatography, which yielded nine fractions. Among them, fraction 5 showed the highest antibacterial activity. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, and triterpenoids. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test revealed that 250 ppm was the lowest effective concentration, while the disk diffusion assay demonstrated that 350 ppm produced the largest inhibition zone (10.03 ± 1.27 mm), which was statistically comparable to that of chloramphenicol (F = 91.34; p < 0.01). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed structural damage to A. hydrophila cells, including membrane disruption and lysis. This study introduces a new approach utilizing the ethyl acetate fraction of C. ternatea, combined with fractionation techniques and SEM imaging, to evaluate antibacterial activity. It offers potential for the development of environmentally friendly natural antibacterial agents for the aquaculture industry Keywords: Clitoria ternatea, Aeromonas hydrophila, ethyl acetate fraction, antibacterial activity.

Abstract

The heavy metal lead has been reported to pollute waters along the Glagah River, Lamongan Regency, Indonesia. Lead contamination in all organs of the Tutut snail (Filopaludina javanica) was detected at 2.92 ± 0.5 ppm. Therefore, lead contamination can cause severe problems because lead can accidentally accumulate in the human body through the food chain. One effort to reduce risks related to food safety is Depuration. The research aimed to analyze the effect of Depuration using a flushing system on histopathological changes and metallothionein levels in all organs of the spotted snail (Filopaludina javanica). The research used a Completely Randomized Design with four treatments and three replications. Treatment includes flushing time (6 hours, 12 hours, 18 and 24 hours). The MT response was tested statistically using One Way Anova, while the histopathological analysis used a descriptive method by comparing before treatment and after flushing treatment for 24 hours, to determine metallothionein levels, the ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) method was used. The results showed tissue damage in edema, hyperplasia, and vacuolation. Tissue damage before and after Depuration was relatively the same and included in the low category, with damage ranging from (0-6.1%). Meanwhile, metallothionein analysis has not shown a significant decrease in levels. Metallothionein levels increased with the duration of flushing. Further checks showed that the media water used in flushing during Depuration contained Fe and Zn, which resulted in increased MT levels
