Abstract

This study investigated the integration of Pancasila values into ethnomathematics-based learning through a project-based learning approach to enhance students’ problem-solving skills. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group was conducted at SMAN 8 Muaro Jambi, involving 62 grade XI students. The instruments consisted of a mathematical problem-solving test, observation sheets, and rubrics for assessing Pancasila values during learning activities. Data were analyzed using paired and independent sample t-tests, normalized gain (N-Gain), and effect size. The findings revealed that the posttest mean score of the experimental class, taught by using the PjBL integrated with ethnomathematics contexts including weaving patterns and local architectuaral designs, was significantly higher than that of the control one (78.94 compared to 69.48). The N-gain of the experimental group (0.61) belonged to medium-high, while that of the control group was only 0.32. Cohen’s d for effect size was 0.82, which was classified as a large effect. Qualitative results also described that collaboration, tolerance, and responsibility in the experimental class were higher, which indicated the implementation of Pancasila values in project activities. The results of this study show that an integration of ethnomathematics and Pancasila values in PjBL can enhance the both student’s problem-solving skills and character.

Abstract

This study aims to conduct a critical analysis of the implementation of Character Education Strengthening (PPK) in Indonesia from the perspective of ontological, epistemological, and axiological philosophy of science. The research method uses library research with a qualitative approach and employs critical philosophical analysis (philosophical inquiry and critical analysis) and academic literature. The study's results found that ontologically, the essence of PPK is an integral effort to internalize moral dispositions rooted in cultural values and Pancasila. Epistemologically, there are critical challenges in the acquisition and verification of character knowledge; dominant quantitative measurements often fail to capture the internal affective dimension authentically, which leads to methodological inconsistencies in the field. Axiologically, the primary value of PPK is the development of ethical and moral citizens with a national identity, as reflected in the vision of the Pancasila student profile. The conclusion is that although PPK has a solid philosophical and axiological foundation, the biggest challenge lies in the epistemological aspect. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the epistemological framework through the development of authentic and consistent qualitative assessment methods, as well as ongoing professional development for teachers.   Keywords: Axiology, Epistemology, Philosophy of Science, Ontology, Character Education (PPK), Pancasila Student Profile

Abstract

Learning using the problem-based learning (PBL) enables students to solve problems as well as improve their science knowledge and skills. This study aims to investigate the effect of the use of PBL on critical thinking skills of high school students in biotechnology. Various levels of students’ self-confidence are used as a moderating variable for PBL in producing the effect. A total of 64 students of SMAN 8 Batanghari Jambi were involved in this study. Some 32 students were allocated each to the experimental class which was learning using PBL and the control class which was learning using the expository learning. Data were collected using a pre-validated self-confidence questionnaires and tests of critical thinking skills. The factorial type of quasi-experimental with pretest posttest nonequivalent control group design was used in this study. The collected data were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA test. The results showed that PBL-students had a higher average score of critical thinking skills (85.87) than their counterpart (78.80). The data also showed that the students with better self-confidence also have a higher average score of critical thinking skills (85.32) than those with lower self-confidence (79.34). The results of the two-way ANOVA test showed that there was an effect of the use of PBL and the students' self-confidence on students' critical thinking skills. Even though it is very weak, the interaction between the learning model and the self-confidence was seemingly existed in affecting the students' critical thinking skills. It can be concluded that the appropriate learning model and appropriate self-confidence can affect student learning critical thinking skills
