Abstract

Background : Adolescence is an important stage for starting high-risk behavior, including in the realm of sexuality. Race or ethnicity is an important factor related to sexual behavior. Perpose: to evaluate the behavior of adolescents in engaging in high-risk sex from the perspective of their respective ethnic cultures. Methods : This systematic review followed the 2020 version of the PRISMA guidelines. The initial search was conducted from April to June 2023. Search sources from 4 databases, using 5 keywords: adolescent, sexual behaviour, high-risk behaviour, sexual risk, and reproductive behaviour. Criteria: observational study, using English, 2000 to 2023, school adolescent population. There were 1,492 papers found after searching the database. The systematic review contained the final 11 research following screening and eligibility determination. Results : Overall, high-risk sexual behavior appears to demonstrate no significant differences among Latino, Hispanic, European, and American adolescents. However, in Asia, pre-marital sex remains highly stigmatized in contrast to its acceptance in Europe and America. Acculturation emerges as a critical predictor contributing to increased high-risk sexual behavior. In Latin adolescents, a lack of compliance with family ties (Familismo) strongly correlates with high-risk sexual behavior. Moreover, in Hispanic adolescents, paternal discipline seems to have a greater association with high-risk sexual behavior compared to maternal discipline. Notably, there were no discernible differences among ethnicities concerning gender, indicating that males across these groups were more prone to engaging in high-risk sexual behavior. Conclusion. Sex education is a prevalent topic among Western societies, primarily aimed at curbing unsafe sexual behavior to prevent venereal diseases. In contrast, Asian cultures still regard sex education as taboo, placing emphasis on preventing extramarital sexual activity.

Abstract

Learning using the problem-based learning (PBL) enables students to solve problems as well as improve their science knowledge and skills. This study aims to investigate the effect of the use of PBL on critical thinking skills of high school students in biotechnology. Various levels of students’ self-confidence are used as a moderating variable for PBL in producing the effect. A total of 64 students of SMAN 8 Batanghari Jambi were involved in this study. Some 32 students were allocated each to the experimental class which was learning using PBL and the control class which was learning using the expository learning. Data were collected using a pre-validated self-confidence questionnaires and tests of critical thinking skills. The factorial type of quasi-experimental with pretest posttest nonequivalent control group design was used in this study. The collected data were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA test. The results showed that PBL-students had a higher average score of critical thinking skills (85.87) than their counterpart (78.80). The data also showed that the students with better self-confidence also have a higher average score of critical thinking skills (85.32) than those with lower self-confidence (79.34). The results of the two-way ANOVA test showed that there was an effect of the use of PBL and the students' self-confidence on students' critical thinking skills. Even though it is very weak, the interaction between the learning model and the self-confidence was seemingly existed in affecting the students' critical thinking skills. It can be concluded that the appropriate learning model and appropriate self-confidence can affect student learning critical thinking skills

Abstract

The low quality and productivity of students' final assignments is a major challenge in higher education. This study aims to develop a collaborative supervision model through a multi-level approach to improve the quality and productivity of student research. The model encourages active collaboration among students, supervisors, and academic staff. Using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, data were first collected quantitatively via questionnaires and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), followed by qualitative analysis using thematic analysis with NVIVO software. Bibliometric mapping was also carried out using VOSviewer to identify core concepts. Results show that the collaborative supervision model is valid and feasible according to expert validation. Field trials demonstrate a significant impact on increasing students’ independence, time management, motivation, and supervision effectiveness. This study provides a novel contribution by integrating individual, mentoring, and institutional levels in one comprehensive model, which has not been widely applied in traditional supervision practices. The findings imply that collaborative and structured academic supervision is crucial for developing high-quality student research outputs. The model developed can be a strategic alternative to enhance scientific literacy and academic productivity, especially in the context of science education, including physics education in higher education institutions.
