Abstract

Obesity is a condition characterized by excessive accumulation of fat in the body. One form of obesity is central obesity which is characterized by the accumulation of fat, especially in the abdomen, and is more common in men. Central obesity has a stronger correlation with various diseases as a result of chronic inflammatory reactions that occur in adipose tissue. This ongoing inflammatory process will cause changes in various immunological parameters, one of which is leukocyte count. This study aims to determine the relationship between central obesity and leukocyte count in adult obese men. This research uses a cross-sectional approach. 59 study subjects were consisting of 39 central obese men and 20 non-obese central men. Venous blood samples were used in the calculation of differential counts and calculated Manually by microscope. The results showed a significant association between central obesity with neutrophil (p= 0,01), monocyte (p= 0,031) and lymphocyte counts (p= 0,003) but eosinophils and basophils did not have a significant relationship (p= 0,106 and p= 0,166). There is a relationship between central obesity with neutrophil type counts, monocytes, and lymphocytes in adult males with central obesity but eosinophils and basophils have no relationship.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) are tropical infectious diseases prevalent in tropical, subtropical and temperate climate countries, complications of DHF that leads to Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS) may have drastic implications towards the mortality of pediatric patients. Ongoing assessment is still proceeding on Risk factors for the patient’s progression to DSS and there are several predictors utilized on patient follow-up that may indicate high risk of clinical symptom progression to DSS. Several predictors are identified to be the female gender, age between 6-10 years, hepatomegaly, late clinical management, heavy plasma leakage, obesity, spontaneous bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding and presentations of ascites and pleural effusion. Several lab examinations include leucopenia, prolonged aPTT, low platelet count, thrombocytopenia, hematocrit of ≥ 40, low lipid profile, hypoalbuminemia, hypoproteinemia. There are also other predictors identified such as high Troponin T levels, NS1Ag expression, NK and NKT gene expression, elevated Vitamin D levels, Fatty acid levels. high sTM levels, elevated Chymase enzyme serum levels and elevated lactate serum levels. The usage of machine learning and algorithms may also prove useful in predicting DSS complications through pattern identification. There is a wide array of current and new methodologies to predict DHF progression to DSS, and further review analysis may be needed to determine concrete indicators for predicting DHF progression to DSS. Newer methods may prove useful, and would need further testing to ensure its capabilities on predicting DSS.

Abstract

Malaria is a major public health problem in the world, especially in Indonesia. The prevalence of malaria in Indonesia reaches 6 percent with 2000 deaths each year, most of which are caused by Plasmodium falciparum. Various treatment options for falciparum malaria have been developed, but due to various factors, one of which is the adherence of patients who are not monitored medication, increases the risk of resistance to current malaria therapy. Therefore, the researchers conducted further research on alternative malaria therapies. Cinnamomun verum or cinnamon is known to contain cinnamaldehyde compounds which have antimicrobial properties. The purpose of this study was to determine the anti-microbial effect of Cinnamomun verum (cinnamon) extract as an adjuvant therapy in falciparum malaria. This literature review article takes 25 case report articles, research articles, and literature reviews. The conclusion of this study is that the cinnamaldehyde compound in the extract of Cinnamomun verum has an antiparasitic effect which can inhibit the denaturation potential of amino acids, inhibits β-hematin formation and activity of the reductase enzyme on Plasmodium falciparum enoyl-ACP reductase. It is known that these four things have an important role in the pathogenesis of falciparum malaria.

Abstract

Obesity has a tendency to develop throughout the world, both in developed and developing countries. This is due to the prevalence which continues to increase preogressively from year to year. This central obesity is closely related to degenerative diseases such as hypertension that occur through the mechanism of Renost Angiotensin Aldostseron and sympathetic nerve activity. Poor sleep quality can increase the increase in blood pressure so that it worsens the development of hypertension in patients with central obesity. This type of research is a non-paired observational analytic type with cross sectional research design. This research was conducted in November 2012 in the University of Lampung. The sample used in this study was based on consecutive sampling and obtained as many as 80 men with central obesity. This research was conducted by interviewing the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire and measuring blood pressure to respondents from all the academic community of men with central obesity selected in the University of Lampung. The results of this study were processed using computer software. The results of the analysis with Chi Square test of sleep quality on systolic blood pressure showed p value <0.05, namely p value 0.021 and PR 0.056 and 95% CI 0.320-0.932 and sleep quality on diastolic blood pressure obtained p values 0.013 and PR 0.531 and 95% CI 0.312-0.903. The conclusion of this study, there is a relationship between sleep quality and blood pressure in men with central obesity at Lampung University.

Abstract

The incidence of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in the world and in Indonesia continues to increase. One factor that can affect high blood glucose levels and end up being DM is psychological stress. Patients with central obesity are more vulnerable and have a higher risk of experiencing stress caused by various psychological and emotional factors. The occurrence of stress will cause the activation of the Corticotropic-Releasing Hormone (CRH)-Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)-cortisol hormone system which has a direct effect on increasing glucose levels in the blood (hyperglycemia) and if the condition continues, it will increase the risk of DM disease. Observational analytic method with a cross-sectional approach was used in this study. The study sample consisted of 82 patients with central obesity in the University of Lampung environment, with a consecutive sampling method. This research was conducted by filling in and direct interviewing the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)-10 questionnaire and measuring fasting blood glucose levels in all the academic communities on men with central obesity at the University of Lampung. The results of the univariate analysis of the research sample were dominated by the age group of 18-25 years; the stress level was in the moderate category; with uncontrolled fasting blood glucose levels. The results of bivariate analysis with Chi-Square test showed p-value = 0.001 (p-value <0.05). There is a relationship between stress level and fasting blood glucose in men with central obesity at the University of Lampung.

Abstract

Maximum oxygen volume (VO2max) is the maximum oxygen uptake during exercise. People with good fitness have higher VO2max value and can perform activities more vigorously than those with poor fitness. Body mass index (BMI) is one of the body composition factors that affect VO2max. VO2max can be measured through various methods, one of which is the Balke test. This study aims to determine the relationship of body mass index to VO2max in the first grade students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lampung. This research is a correlative analytic study with a cross-sectional approach using primary data which was conducted in one meeting in November 2022. The data is obtained using measuring body mass index (BMI) first, and followed by measuring VO2max using the Balke test method. This study uses sample of 39 batch 2022 male students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lampung who have previously passed the inclusion and exclusion criterias. The result in this study indicates that there is a significant relationship between body mass index and VO2max in the first grade students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lampung. In this study, the p value is <0.001 and the correlation coefficient is -0.812, which means that there is a very strong negative correlation between variables. This negative correlation relationship indicates that the higher the body mass index (BMI) will result in lower individual VO2max values, and vice versa.
