Abstract

Information on a culture needs to be written in an international language, like English language, to make it well known internationally. Such reading materials would also have positive impact in the educational and cultural diplomacy. This article argues on the importance of the internationalization of Kalimantan Barat culture and recommends a research procedure to develop materials on Malay sultanates and palaces in Kalimantan Barat as English extensive reading sources for younger generations.   There are three foci of activity that are suggested here, namely: need analyses, designing and developing, and evaluation. The presence of such products would facilitate the local younger generations learn their cultures and English language simultaneously through extensive reading activities. The presence of confirmable materials would help reduce information bias and misunderstanding about the history and the culture. - Through extensively reading local materials that are written in English, it is expexted that the younger generations would be able to communicate their local culture and history nationally and internationally.

Abstract

Abstract This study examines the socio-cultural transformation of Rawak Hulu and Rawak Hilir villages in the Sekadau Hulu District, West Kalimantan, focusing on the shift from ethnocentrism to multiculturalism. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that multicultural education and intercultural interaction are the main drivers of this transformation. Education plays an active role in fostering inclusive values and deconstructing long-standing prejudices, while social interactions strengthen cohesion between the Malay and Chinese communities. Increasing social awareness and broader access to education have further promoted the adoption of inclusive values, leading to the development of a harmonious multicultural environment. However, challenges remain, particularly during political periods that may reignite ethnic sentiments, suggesting that multiculturalism is a dynamic process requiring ongoing maintenance. This study contributes to the broader understanding of social change in rural Indonesia and highlights the importance of policies that promote cultural integration and multicultural education to strengthen social cohesion in ethnically diverse communities. Key words: Ethnocentrism; Multiculturalism; Sociocultural Change; Education.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by Doratoon animation videos on students’ conceptual understanding in Social Studies for eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Sengah Temila. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. The population in this study consisted of all eighth-grade students, with two classes selected as samples using a purposive sampling technique. The experimental class was taught using the PBL model assisted by Doratoon animation videos, while the control class used Canva media. The research instrument was a multiple-choice test consisting of 20 questions administered before and after the treatment to measure students’ conceptual understanding. The data analysis results showed that the average N-Gain score of the experimental class was 21.6% (low category), while the control class scored 22.6% (low category). The independent sample t-test yielded a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the experimental and control classes. Therefore, the Problem-Based Learning model assisted by Doratoon animation videos was proven to be more effective than Canva media in improving students’ conceptual understanding in Social Studies. The results of this study are expected to serve as a reference for teachers in applying innovative learning media to support more interactive and meaningful learning.

Abstract

The rapid global adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed higher education, necessitating research on its impact, particularly in social science fields. This study investigates the perception of 151 undergraduate students from the Social Sciences Education Department at Tanjungpura University towards the role of AI in developing Academic Speaking Skills. Employing a quantitative, descriptive survey design, the research utilizes the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) framework, assessing Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), Attitude Toward Using (ATT), and Behavioral Intention to Use (BITU). The findings indicate an overall positive and stable acceptance of AI (Overall Mean 2.895 on a 4 -point scale). Perceived Usefulness is the highest adoption driver (Mean 3.00), with students most strongly agreeing that AI is superior for brainstorming and finding ideas for presentations (Mean 3.26). However, the acceptance is critical and controlled: students showed lower confidence that AI automatically improves the overall quality of their final arguments (Mean 2.66). This discrepancy, alongside the lowest score in Behavioral Intention to Use (Mean 2.74), highlights a controlled integration approach. The study concludes that while AI is highly valued as a creative support tool, there is a crucial and urgent need to integrate mandatory AI Literacy programs into the curriculum to ensure students develop the critical skills necessary to review, adapt, and responsibly use AI output in academic discourse within Higher Education.

Abstract

This study explored the learning strategies and difficulties of visually impaired students. The study involved four students with visual impairment in Pontianak, West Kalimantan Province. The researchers collected data through semi-structured interviews. A qualitative approach was employed in this study. Four informant students took part in this study. All of them were in their secondary education level. The researchers coded the transcription of the interviews. The results showed that visually impaired students preferred to use auditory learning resources and active learning strategies. They perceived these two learning strategies as essential to help them understand the learning materials. Besides, the informant students also claimed that their reading comprehension, self-efficacy and confidence were low. These ideas may facilitate educators to understand what visually impaired students need in their learning and help educators accommodate their teaching in line with what blind students require.
