Abstract

Despite the growing body of literature on the role of Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM) in supporting educational practice, little comprehensive understanding could be gained on how to scrutinize dialogue between teacher and students in MIM for the sake of students’ meaning-making. Thus, this study explored the process of teacher-students dialogic interaction in a MIM group as a viable pedagogical activity in fostering students’ establishment of voice in argumentative writing. Particularly, it focused on the construction of Engagement resources (Martin White, 2005) as the realization of voice in the students’ writing. To reach the objectives, a qualitative case study with multiple data sources were employed, i.e., the records of instant messaging conversation, students’ argumentative text, interview, and observation. The findings revealed that the teacher-students’ discussions in the instant messaging space were enjoyable activities that could support the students’ awareness of Engagement resources because they allowed the discovery of repertoires through reasoning, problem-solving, and peer learning. Furthermore, although there were various uptakes of Engagement resources in the students’ text, most students showed progressive achievements in applying the sources effectively in their writing.

Abstract

Being cohesive in writing for the hearing-impaired students is very crucial, serving as an alternative means of expressing ideas without using sign language in communicating with people in general. This study aims to analyze the textual structure of the hearing-impaired students’ recount texts to instantiate how they structure language in communication. This study focused on investigating the choice of theme and thematic progression patterns as an instantiation of making meanings among the hearing-impaired students as a minority group of students with special needs. The data were 36 recount texts of high and low achiever students collected from three educational levels: elementary, junior high, and senior high schools. Following a qualitative approach to data collection and analysis, this study relied on Systemic Functional Linguistics as the main conceptual framework for investigating types of theme and thematic progression patterns, and how these two elements showed the features of writing to mean among the hearing-impaired students. In terms of theme choices, the findings indicate that low achiever hearing-impaired students employed more marked themes with a lack of ability in writing to mean. In terms of thematic progression, theme reiteration pattern was the most frequently employed pattern, indicating a strong intention to the topic. The study informs that the textual description of the hearing-impaired students’ writings could help the teachers understand what and how to teach to improve their writing to mean.

Abstract

Non-native English scholars are expected to publish international journals with abstracts written in English. There are a lot of factors that caused the rejection of journal article publication; one of them is disorganized writing styles. Compared to the native English speakers, the issues regarding disorganized writing styles appeared more in the non-native English speakers’ research article since they have different writing styles, cultures, and mother tongues. Abstract Coaching Clinic Workshop was held for Indonesian University of Education (UPI) scholars so that it is hoped that there would be an increase in the quality of composing research article abstracts and an increase in the number of international publications from scholars. The purpose of this research is to uncover rhetorical moves and genre of the abstracts, its genre development, as well as the linguistics features used in the abstracts. Thirty abstracts made by fifteen UPI scholars who were also the participants of the Abstract Coaching Clinic Workshop were collected as the data for the analysis. Hyland’s (2000) theory was used to analyze each move and step of the abstracts. The results show the occurrence frequency of each move and step, along with the linguistic features used by the academicians; and the development of their abstract writing from before and after the coaching clinic session. The findings serve as a potential reference for those researchers that are concerned in discourse analysis, cross-cultural abstracts, and research publication needs.

Abstract

This study was qualitative descriptive, which investigated what kind of gender features emerged for the male and female represented in image of textbook for elementary school. The data of this study were collected from an English textbook entitled “Stairway a fun and easy English textbook (for Grade IV of Elementary Schools”, published by Tiga Serangkai. The data in the present study were in the form of images and texts taken from a textbook. The data were analysed by following the theory of visual grammar by (Kress van Leeuwen, 2006) to analyse the visual text. The study found that there are unequitable gender representations typically because both genders are represented through stereotypical portrayals. Males are represented to dominate language strategies and occupy more public areas, while females are represented to be passive and occupy more private areas. The portrayal of asymmetrical gender representation in the textbook shows that the reflection of the textbook is realized by ideology and inspired by the interest of the society.

Abstract

Illegal parking has become a problem in the city of Bandung that never ends. The limitation of parking spaces is one of the causes. There are no strict sanctions against illegal parking attendants, causing illegal parking to mushroom. In addition to illegal parking eating up a lot of public facilities and narrowing the public sphere, illegal parking has an impact on the practice of thuggery that disturbs the community. Starting from parking fee hikes, to acts of persecution and even murder. Murder has occurred in the city of Bandung due to the fight for (illegal) parking lots, and resulted in the road body getting narrower and the congestion severe. It has a negative impact on public comfort, order and safety. Illegal parking is a serious problem that must be immediately fixed by the Bandung City government. If not corrected immediately, it will have a negative impact on people's lives and hinder the development process of the city of Bandung. The practice of illegal parking is getting 'wilder' and rampant in the city of Bandung, causing losses to the community. Illegal parking in the community causes people to be uneasy, even feeling intimidated by this legal practice. The phenomenon of parking fee hikes carried out by illegal parking attendants has become a difficult condition for the Bandung city government to abolish which does not act firmly. Illegal parking makes a lot of use of the space of the road body, resulting in the road getting narrower and causing long traffic jams. The Bandung city government has a lot of government land that can be used as an official parking lot. Like the former Palaguna land in the Bandung city square area, it can be collaborated with the private sector in the Build Operate Transfer (BOT) scheme. So that public spaces can be functioned optimally by the people of the city of Bandung. Conditions have a positive impact on people's lives. The level of congestion has decreased positively by reducing the level of stress and unrest of the community. maximizing the function of public spaces, not as a recreational space, but as a means of education, creativity, so as to foster a better democratic climate for the community.

Abstract

Since serving as Mayor of the City of Bandung for the 2014 - 2019 period, Ridwan Kamil has been intensively building public spaces. Two of them are the Cikapundung Terrace and the Cihampelas Terrace. Although both are public spaces that provide open access for anyone to interact, they have different characters. The Cikapundung terrace is mor e driven by efforts to educate people to love the environment and rivers, while the Cihampelas terrace is more an effort by the Bandung City government to organize street vendors so that it does not cause traffic jams along the Cihampelas road. This policy has a positive impact on the one hand, but on the other hand it has a negative impact on other parties. For example, the construction of the Cikapundung terraces and the Cihampelas terraces has had a negative impact on the economic conditions of the peopl e who used to earn good fortune along the Cihampelas sidewalks and around Kampung Kolase, which is now the Cikapundung terraces. Thus government policies have an impact on society. As Dye (1981) said that the impact of a policy is the overall implication o r impact caused by a policy. Therefore this study will focus on analyzing the impact of public sphere development policies with a focus on the Cikapundung terraces and Cihampelas terraces using qualitative methods using the Multicase Intertwined Study tech nique from Robert K. Yin (2013). It is hoped that through this research an overview of the implications of public sphere policies for the people of the city of Bandung can be obtained.
