Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the influence of instructional leadership and the school environment on teachers’ teaching service at State Junior High School in Pasaman Barat Regency, West Sumatra. Using a quantitative correlational research design, data were collected through Likert-scale questionnaires from a sample of 156 teachers selected by stratified proportional random sampling. Descriptive statistics, simple regression, and multiple regression were employed to test the research hypotheses. The results indicate that instructional leadership has a positive and significant effect on teachers’ teaching service, and the school environment also has a positive and significant effect. These variables explain a substantial proportion of the variance in teachers’ teaching service. Strengthening principals’ instructional leadership and systematically improving school environmental conditions are strategic efforts to enhance the quality of teachers’ teaching service and, in turn, to support the improvement of educational quality at the junior high school level.

Abstract

This study portrayed the English teachers' perceptions of using rewards in teaching English at the elementary school level. It aimed to investigate why English teachers use rewards in their teaching. The study employed a qualitative research approach, with data collected through interviews. It was conducted at a public elementary school in Jambi, where three English teachers from the school were selected as participants, and the data was gathered through interviews. The findings illustrated a gap between teachers' theoretical understanding and their practice in implementing rewards as a way to motivate students to learn. The results showed that teachers do partially understand the concept of 'reward' in theory. In line with these findings, the study revealed that rewards can help improve several aspects of student learning, such as self-confidence, motivation, and enthusiasm for learning. The study also includes several recommendations for stakeholders and other teachers.

Abstract

A principal's managerial success is determined by their ability to make rational, appropriate, and effective decisions to achieve educational goals. However, this process is not always perfectly rational, as it is influenced by limitations in information, time, and resources. Decision-making is essentially a choice from several alternatives. This study aims to analyze the rationality and effectiveness of decision-making by the principal of SMPN 1 Guguak District based on Herbert A. Simon’s Decision-Making Model. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach through a literature study, examining theories, research findings, and relevant practices in educational leadership. Data were analyzed using content analysis techniques from various scientific literature sources. The results show that the principal applies the principle of bounded rationality in every decision made. The decision-making process follows the five stages of Simon’s model: intelligence, design, choice, implementation, and evaluation. The effectiveness of the principal’s decisions is reflected in the implementation of policies, acceptance by the school community, and their impact on improving teacher performance and the overall quality of education. Thus, adaptive and data-based rationality is proven to enhance the effectiveness of the principal’s decision-making within the context of modern educational management.

Abstract

The rapid development of the creative industry has increased competition in the photobox business in Indonesia. This situation requires photobox service providers to implement more innovative marketing strategies that are relevant to current trends. Photoplace Indonesia, as one of the modern photobox providers, strives to increase brand awareness through digital marketing strategies, particularly by utilizing collaborations with key opinion leaders (KOLs) who are effective in reaching young audiences on social media. This study aims to analyze the strategy of utilizing KOLs in building brand awareness for Photoplace Indonesia, identify supporting factors that are indicators of campaign success, and identify inhibiting factors that can affect the smooth implementation. The research method used a qualitative approach through direct observation, interviews with the marketing communications team, participation during internship activities, and literature studies related to marketing strategies, KOLs, and brand awareness. Based on the findings, the KOL utilization strategy was carried out through appropriate KOL selection, systematic brief preparation, coordination during the content production process, and evaluation of campaign performance based on indicators such as engagement and audience response. Supporting factors included strategic planning, maximum utilization of social media platforms, and good internal communication, while inhibiting factors included limited local KOLs, variations in content production capabilities, and technical constraints at outlets. Overall, collaboration with KOLs was proven to increase message reach, digital interaction, and brand awareness at Photoplace Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines students’ pragmatic competence in using request strategies in English formal and informal letter writing, with particular attention to how learners adjust their linguistic choices according to context, social distance, and power relations. Adopting a qualitative case study design, the participants were twelve undergraduate EFL students who produced one formal and one informal letter containing request expressions. Data were collected through written tasks and supported by follow-up semi-structured interviews with selected participants to clarify pragmatic choices. The written data were analyzed based on Braun and Clarke’s six phases of thematic analysis, with NVivo software employed to support systematic coding and data organization. The analysis focused on patterns of request strategies to explore students’ contextual appropriateness in written communication. The findings indicate that students demonstrated emerging pragmatic competence by differentiating their use of request strategies across formal and informal contexts. In formal letters, students predominantly employed conventionally indirect strategies, particularly query preparatory forms, to show respect and avoid being too direct with institutional authority, although instances of excessive directness were still observed. In informal letters, however, flexibility, emotional expressiveness, and a wider combination of direct and indirect strategies were highlighted which reflected closer social relationships and reduced formality. The results suggest that students are developing their contextual awareness and politeness sensitivity, yet their pragmatic control remains uneven across communicative settings. The study offers the pedagogical importance of integrating explicit instruction on pragmatic features into EFL writing courses to support students’ ability to formulate contextually appropriate requests.

Abstract

Excessive noise exposure can lead to permanent hearing damage over time. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), caused by occupational noise exposure, is a common health issue. Many studies focus on occupational noise exposure that exceeds exposure limits; yet, few focus on the impact of exposure duration on hearing function. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the duration of noise exposure and loss of hearing function among employees of Company X. This cross-sectional study involved 61 employees of Company X. Company X is a multinational glass company that produces glass and glass ceramics, including syringes, eyeglasses, vials, and ampoules. Data was collected using a noise exposure characteristics questionnaire, a sound level meter for noise level measurement, and audiometry to assess hearing function. Subjects with a prior diagnosis of hearing disorders, hypertension, obesity, and those aged over 65 were excluded from this study. Audiometry results were grouped into categories, with 57 subjects (93.44%) categorized as “normal”, 3 subjects (4.92%) as “mild”, and 1 subject (1.64%) as “moderate”. Chi-square analysis with a P-value of 0.495 (>0.05) indicated that there is no statistically significant relationship between the duration of noise exposure and loss of hearing function among employees of Company X.
