Abstract

Students' science process skills are still relatively low. One of the influencing factors is the choice of learning methods that are still conventional and there is no innovation in learning. This research aims to determine the effect of the STEM integrated Project Based Learning (PjBL) model on students' science process skills. This research is a quasi-experimental research with a posttest-only control group design. The data collection technique uses 20 multiple-choice questions developed by the science process skill indicators, which consist of five basic skill indicators: observing, measuring, communicating, predicting, and classification. The data analysis technique uses prerequisite tests (homogeneity and normality tests) and hypothesis testing (Manova test). Based on the results of the normality test, it was found that the data was normally distributed because it obtained a value of > 0.05. The homogeneity test results also showed that the data was distributed homogeneously because it obtained a value > 0.05. The results of hypothesis testing using the Manova test showed that science process skills were 0.000 < 0.05, so there was an influence of using the STEM-integrated PjBL model on students' science process skills. So it can be concluded that the STEM-integrated PjBL model can be said to be an innovation in learning to improve students' science process skills.

Abstract

Training critical thinking skills in science teacher candidates (STC) faces challenges, particularly due to the ineffectiveness of traditional teaching models, resulting in suboptimal critical thinking performance. This study aims to implement a Hybrid Ethnoscience Project-Based Learning (E-PjBL) model integrated with virtual assistive technology as a solution to enhance critical thinking performance in STC. A mixed-method approach combining quantitative and qualitative methods was utilized. An experimental design involving 51 STC at the University of Mataram was conducted, dividing participants into experimental and control groups. The experimental group engaged in learning activities using the hybrid E-PjBL model, while the control group followed traditional teaching methods. Quantitative data were collected through critical thinking skill tests administered pre- and post-intervention, while qualitative data were obtained from observations of learning implementation. Results demonstrated that the hybrid E-PjBL model significantly enhanced critical thinking skills compared to traditional methods. The experimental group’s posttest scores averaged 4.123, significantly higher than the control group’s 2.667. Statistical analysis using ANOVA revealed substantial differences in critical thinking scores between the groups, with an F-value of 99.613 (p < 0.001) for between-subject effects. Furthermore, a significant interaction was observed between test repetition (pretest-posttest) and group (control vs. experimental), with an F-value of 104.205 (p < 0.001). Qualitative findings indicated the model’s practicality, as evidenced by high student participation and engagement. These findings highlight that integrating ethnoscience, project-based learning, and virtual assistive technology offers an innovative and effective pedagogical approach to enhancing the quality of science teacher education. Further research is needed to explore the model's adaptability across diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

This review critically evaluates the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in fostering critical thinking (CT) through a systematic analysis of experimental and quasi-experimental studies from the past decade. It synthesizes evidence across diverse contexts to identify factors influencing the success of PBL, emphasizing its contextual adaptability and methodological diversity. Notably, this review not only compiles existing evidence but also provides a nuanced analysis of the contextual and methodological elements affecting PBL's success in enhancing CT. The findings reveal that while PBL is generally effective, its superiority over traditional methods is not guaranteed, with some studies reporting comparable outcomes. High-achieving students particularly benefit from PBL, although its impact on problem-solving skills—a vital component of CT—is less pronounced. These insights underline the need for tailored PBL strategies to address its limitations and optimize its benefits. This review suggests integrating complementary methods such as technology and collaborative tools to enrich PBL. Future research should explore innovative adaptations that enhance all dimensions of CT across varied educational settings, thereby maximizing the pedagogical potential of PBL. This comprehensive evaluation provides critical insights for educators and policymakers aiming to advance CT development in contemporary education.
